The first chapter concerns simultaneous systems of ordinary differential equations and focuses mostly on the cases that have a matrix of characteristic polynomials, namely linear systems with constant or homogeneous power coefficients. The method of the matrix of characteristic polynomials also applies to simultaneous systems of linear finite difference equations with constant coefficients. The second chapter considers linear multi-dimensional oscillators with any number of degrees of freedom including damping, forcing, and multiple resonance. The discrete oscillators may be extended from a finite number of degrees-of-freedom to infinite chains. The continuous oscillators correspond to waves in homogeneous or inhomogeneous media, including elastic, acoustic, electromagnetic, and water surface waves. The combination of propagation and dissipation leads to the equations of mathematical physics. The free and forced solutions are considered together with boundary, initial, asymptotic, starting, and other conditions. The book is intended for graduate students and engineers working with mathematical models and can be applied to problems in mechanical, aerospace, electrical, and other branches of engineering dealing with advanced technology, and also in the physical sciences and applied mathematics.

Book excerpt: In their review of the "Bayesian analysis of simultaneous equation systems", Dr~ze and Richard (1983) - hereafter DR - express the following viewpoint about the present state of development of the Bayesian full information analysis of such sys tems i) the method allows "a flexible specification of the prior density, including well defined noninformative prior measures"; ii) it yields "exact finite sample posterior and predictive densities". However, they call for further developments so that these densities can be eval uated through 'numerical methods, using an integrated software packa~e. To that end, they recommend the use of a Monte Carlo technique, since van Dijk and Kloek (1980) have demonstrated that "the integrations can be done and how they are done". In this monograph, we explain how we contribute to achieve the developments suggested by Dr~ze and Richard. A basic idea is to use known properties of the porterior density of the param eters of the structural form to design the importance functions, i. e. approximations of the posterior density, that are needed for organizing the integrations.

Book excerpt: The simultaneous inclusion of polynomial complex zeros is a crucial problem in numerical analysis. Rapidly converging algorithms are presented in these notes, including convergence analysis in terms of circular regions, and in complex arithmetic. Parallel circular iterations, where the approximations to the zeros have the form of circular regions containing these zeros, are efficient because they also provide error estimates. There are at present no book publications on this topic and one of the aims of this book is to collect most of the algorithms produced in the last 15 years. To decrease the high computational cost of interval methods, several effective iterative processes for the simultaneous inclusion of polynomial zeros which combine the efficiency of ordinary floating-point arithmetic with the accuracy control that may be obtained by the interval methods, are set down, and their computational efficiency is described. The rate of these methods is of interest in designing a package for the simultaneous approximation of polynomial zeros, where automatic procedure selection is desired. The book is both a text and a reference source for mathematicans, engineers, physicists and computer scientists who are interested in new developments and applications, but the material is also accessible to anyone with graduate level mathematical background and some knowledge of basic computational complex analysis and programming.
