Book Equations of Motion of a Rigid Projectile

Download or read book Equations of Motion of a Rigid Projectile written by Robert F. Lieske and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic vector equations of motion of a rigid body are described, and an aerodynamic force moment system is developed. The vector forces and moments due to gravity and rotation of the earth are added to the system. Forces and moments produced by a rocket motor are included, and the resulting vector differential equations of motion of a symmetric rigid projectile are derived. An appendix is added, which describes a set of initial conditions imposed on pertinent parameters for rigid body trajectory simulation.

Book A Projectile Penetration Theory for Layered Targets

Download or read book A Projectile Penetration Theory for Layered Targets written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Projectile penetration was studied. Empirical equations describing the axial force which opposes the motion of a rigid projectile as it passes through a deformable solid target were developed. Experimental data consisting of impact velocity and final depth of penetration were used to estimate the coefficients in the relation between axial force and projectile velocity. However, these coefficients were not specified in terms of standard material properties, and so they were applicable only for the particular targets for which they were determined. In the present work, the quasistatic expansion of a spherical cavity in a concentrically layered medium will be analyzed in order to obtain an approximation for the radial stress at the surface of a slowly expanding spherical cavity in a vertically layered medium with a plane interface. This approximation will then be used to construct a simple equation of motion for a rigid cylindrical projectile (with a conical or ogival nose shape) which penetrates a layered target.

Book Terminal Ballistics

Download or read book Terminal Ballistics written by Zvi Rosenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-02 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph covers all important issues of terminal ballistics in a comprehensive way combining experimental data, numerical simulations and analytical modeling. It uses a unique approach to numerical simulations as sensitivity measure for the major physical parameters. In the first chapter, the book includes necessary details about the experimental equipment which are used for ballistic tests. The second chapter covers essential features of the codes which are used in recent years all over the world, the Euler vs. Lagrange schemes, meshing techniques etc. The third chapter, devoted to the penetration mechanics of rigid rods, brings the update of modeling in this field. The fourth chapter deals with plate perforation and the fifth chapter deals with the penetration of shaped charge jets and eroding long rods. The last chapter includes several techniques for the disruption and defeating of the main threats in armor design. Throughout the book the authors demonstrate the advantages of the simulation approach in understanding the basis physics behind the investigated phenomena.

Book Projectile Transverse Motion and Stability in Electromagnetic Induction Launchers

Download or read book Projectile Transverse Motion and Stability in Electromagnetic Induction Launchers written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transverse motion of a projectile in an electromagnetic induction launcher is considered. The equations of motion for translation and rotation are derived assuming a rigid projectile and a flyway restoring force per unit length that is proportional to the local displacement. Linearized transverse forces and torques due to energized coils are derived for displaced or tilted armature elements based on a first order perturbation method. The resulting equations of motion for a rigid projectile composed of multiple elements in a multi-coil launcher are analyzed as a coupled oscillator system of equations and a simple linear stability condition is derived. The equations of motion are incorporated into the 2-D Slingshot circuit code and numerical solutions for the transverse motion are obtained. For a launcher with a 10 cm bore radius with a 40 cm long solid armature, we find that stability is achieved with a restoring force (per unit length) constant of k (almost equal to) 1 x 108 N/m2. For k = 1.5 x 108 N/m2 and sample coil misalignment modeled as a sine wave of 1 mm amplitude at wavelengths of one or two meters, the projectile displacement grows to a maximum of 4 mm. This growth is due to resonance between the natural frequency of the projectile transverse motion and the coil displacement wavelength. This resonance does not persist because of the changing axial velocity. Random coil displacement is also found to cause roughly the same projectile displacement. For the maximum displacement a rough estimate of the transverse pressure is 50 bars. Results for a wound armature with uniform current density throughout show very similar displacements.

Book Equations of Projectile Motion in a Flexible Gun Tube

Download or read book Equations of Projectile Motion in a Flexible Gun Tube written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interim report presents the formulation of a system of simultaneous differential equations which describes the general motion of a projectile of finite geometry and inertia traveling in a flexible gun tube. The formulation permits the projectile six degrees-of-freedom relative to the gun tube; three orthogonal translational motions of the projectile c.g. relative to the instantaneous gun tube axis and three (Eulerian) rotational motions of the projectile about it c.g. The formulation is presented in terms of interior ballistics data, projectile design data, and gun tube design and motion data. The formulation accounts for projectile spin, mass eccentricity, elastic deformation of the projectile rotating band and bourrelet, and projectile/bore interfacial friction and torque transmission. Furhtermore, the formulation is unrestricted regarding the nature of gun tube motion. The formulation has been compared with projectile descriptions and formulations employed by other investigators and, based upon this comparison, isconsidered to be the most generally applicable projectile in-bore motion formulation appearing in recent literature.
