Book excerpt: Excerpt from Equations for Predicting Cotton Processing Performance and Product Quality by Improved Evaluations of Raw-Cotton Quality Cottons. All cottons were of the American upland type and they were grown commercially in selected cotton improvement groups across the U. S. Cotton Belt, within their general area of growth adaptation, for the crop year of The cottons were ginned on commercial saw gins serving the respective cotton improvement groups. Each variety and location of growth were represented by early-season, midseason, and late-season samples, except in 5 cases as noted below., The total number of localities from which samples were obtained was 111 and, on the basis of 3 samples per locality, the total number of cottons theoretically should be 333. The actual number of cottons that became available for testing, however, was 328. That is, 5 samples were missing from 3 of the localities. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton Quality Evaluation: Testing Methods and Use The 1923 Standards Act made the use of the official standards mandatory in interstate and foreign commerce unless the cotton was sold from actual samples or private types (purchasers buy directly from farmers and conduct their own testing). The standards were soon accepted by foreign countries and the name, universal standards, was approved. Since the early twenties, revisions of the standards have continued, with the last major revision coming in 1962. The goal of the revisions was to develop standards that are useful from a product perspective, can be uniformly applied, and are related to stable and measurable quality factors. Book Forecasting the Yield and the Price of Cotton Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forecasting the Yield and the Price of Cotton Classic Reprint written by Henry Ludwell Moore and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forecasting the Yield and the Price of Cotton An eminent economist has recently told us that economists no longer talk so confidently as they once did of forecasting social phenomena, and that, confronted with the complexity of social relations, "the sober-minded investigator will be slow in laying too much stress on single causes, slow in generalization, slowest of all in prediction." An equally distinguished statistician has warned his colleagues of the dangers of using refined mathematical methods in the treatment of the loose data supplied by our official bureaus. These are authoritative warnings, and I have not been unmindful of them as the successive theses of this Essay have been developed. But the ultimate aim of all science is prediction; the most ample and trustworthy data of economic science are official statistics; and the only adequate means of exploiting raw statistics are mathematical methods. The statistical devices used in the treatment of our problem of forecasting prices were, for the most part, invented, for another purpose, by Professor Karl Pearson, and rest upon the theory of probabilities.
