Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The solid molecular hydrogens are the simplest and most fundamental molecular solids. Except at ultrahigh pressures on the order of a few mega bars, where a transition to a metallic, atomic phase is expected, these solids are true molecular crystals in which the molecules retain their identity with properties not too different from those of the free molecules. At energies below the electronic excitation energy, the thermal and spectroscopic pro perties of these solids are determined by the translational, rotational, and intramolecular vibrational motions of the interacting molecules. The theo retical analysis of the solid-state properties in terms of the free molecules and the intermolecular interactions forms the main topic of this book. The available detailed knowledge of the properties of the free molecules makes it feasible to carry out this program to a large extent on the basis of first principles, and this is one of the attractive features of these systems. The solid hydrogens are dominated by quantum effects, the most out standing property being that the rotation of the molecules is free down to the lowest temperatures, in the sense that the rotational quantum number J characterizing the rotational motion of the free molecules remains a good quantum number in all of the solid-state phases except at ultrahigh pressures.

Book Equations of State for Hydrogen and Deuterium

Download or read book Equations of State for Hydrogen and Deuterium written by Gerald Irwin Kerley and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the complete revision of a deuterium equation of state (EOS) model published in 1972. It uses the same general approach as the 1972 EOS, i.e., the so-called 'chemical model, ' but incorporates a number of theoretical advances that have taken place during the past thirty years. Three phases are included: a molecular solid, an atomic solid, and a fluid phase consisting of both molecular and atomic species. Ionization and the insulator-metal transition are also included. The most important improvements are in the liquid perturbation theory, the treatment of molecular vibrations and rotations, and the ionization equilibrium and mixture models. In addition, new experimental data and theoretical calculations are used to calibrate certain model parameters, notably the zero-Kelvin isotherms for the molecular and atomic solids, and the quantum corrections to the liquid phase. The report gives a general overview of the model, followed by detailed discussions of the most important theoretical issues and extensive comparisons with the many experimental data that have been obtained during the last thirty years. Questions about the validity of the chemical model are also considered. Implications for modeling the 'giant planets' are also discussed.

Book Molecular and Metallic Hydrogen

Download or read book Molecular and Metallic Hydrogen written by Marvin Ross and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a comprehensive review and analysis of the published data on metallic hydrogen and a summary of the properties of molecular hydrogen that are required to determine the molecular-to-metallic hydrogen transition pressure. The best available effective interaction potential is utilized in calculating the equation of state for solid molecular hydrogen. The equation of state of metallic hydrogen is determined by four different methods and the possible range of molecular-to-metallic hydrogen is largely responsible for the wide discrepancy in calculations of the transition pressure. Metastability of metallic hydrogen is discussed and the experimental high- pressure research pertinent to the determination of molecular-to-metallic hydrogen transition pressure is reviewed.

Book Shock Waves in Condensed Matter

Download or read book Shock Waves in Condensed Matter written by Y. M. Gupta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 922 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourth American Physical Society Topical Conference on Shock Waves in Condensed Matter was held in Spokane, Washington, July 22-25, 1985. Two hundred and fifty scientists and engineers representing thirteen countries registered at the conference. The countries represented included the United States of America, Australia, Canada, The People's Repub lic of China, France, India, Israel, Japan, Republic of China (Taiwan), United Kingdom, U. S. S. R, Switzerland and West Germany. One hundred and sixty-two technical papers, cov ering recent developments in shock wave and high pressure physics, were presented. All of the abstracts have been published in the September 1985 issue of the Bulletin of the American Physical Society. The topical conferences, held every two years since 1979, have become the principal forum for shock wave studies in condensed materials. Both formal and informal technical discussions regarding recent developments conveyed a sense of excitement. Consistent with the past conferences, the purpose of this conference was to bring together scientists and engineers studying the response of condensed matter to dynamic high pressures and temperatures. Papers covering experimental, theoretical, and numerical studies of con densed matter properties were presented. A noteworthy feature of this conference was the participation by several leading scientists engaged in static high pressure research. Donald Curran served as the Master of Ceremonies at the conference banquet, which was at tended by two hundred and seventy-five conference participants and guests including Dr. Samuel Smith, the new President of Washington State University. Dr.

Book Molecular and Chemical Physics Chemistry Biological Effects Geo and Planetary Sciences New Resources Dynamic Pressures High Pressure Safety

Download or read book Molecular and Chemical Physics Chemistry Biological Effects Geo and Planetary Sciences New Resources Dynamic Pressures High Pressure Safety written by B. Vodar and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Pressure Science and Technology, Volume 2 contains the proceedings of the Association Internationale for Research and Advancement of High Pressure Science and Technology's VIIth International Conference held in Le Creusot, France, from July 30 to August 3, 1979. The papers explore a wide range of topics relating to high pressure science and technology, including molecular and chemical physics; melting and dense fluids; liquid crystals; molecular thermophysical properties; light scattering; intermolecular spectroscopy; high-temperature, high-pressure fluids; and properties of earth materials. This volume is comprised of 128 chapters and begins by calculating equations of state for static molecular and metallic hydrogen using the density functional method. The following chapters discuss the effect of density on the induced near infrared absorption spectrum of solid molecular hydrogen at 4.2 K; vibrational relaxation in highly compressed hydrogen; the dual melting curves of carbon tetrachloride; and the statistical theory of polymorphic phase transitions and crystallization. Alkane chain conformation as a function of pressure is also examined, along with high pressure thermodynamics and phase equilibria of fluid mixtures. The remaining sections focus on the lithosphere, athenosphere, and the behavior of dense materials. This book will be a valuable resource for materials scientists, metallurgists, physicists, chemists, and mechanical engineers.
