Book Equal to the Occasion Classic Reprint

Download or read book Equal to the Occasion Classic Reprint written by Edward Garrett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Equal to the Occasion Tradition further said, that when the church was built, and for long 'afterwards, there had stood about its quadrangle sixteen trees, four on each side. An old man, still living, remembered another Old man who had seen these in their glory and certainly, in going about the damp little square, one could see inequalities in the paving where those trees ought to have been. But only one remained now, with its poor roots closed in under the stones, and it put forth leaves more scantily every year, though Miss Griffin, the Old housekeeper of the warehouse at the corner, threw buckets of water round its trunk. The Rev. Harold Bentley was an entire stranger in the place. He did not know the church nor its vicar. He had never been in the neighbourhood be fore, and did not even know much of London at all. The vicar of St. Cecilia's was now taking his summer holiday. A mutual friend Of his and Mr. Bentley's had undertaken the duty, and had fallen ill, and so Mr. Bentley, passing through the metropolis, had taken his place for this one evening. Obviously the taxpayer is not entitled to recover or extinguish through amortization more than the difference between the war cost of such property and what he can sell the property for after the war, or if he continues to need and use it in his business, what it would have cost him after the war. As the rule is expressed in Article 183 of the Regulations: The total amount to be extinguished by amortization, in general, is the excess of the unextinguished or unrecovered cost of the property over its maximum value (either for sale or for use as part of the plant or equipment of a going business) under stable post war. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Victor Hugo These Greek capitals, black with age, and quite deeply graven in the stone, with I know not what signs peculiar to Gothic caligraphy imprinted upon their forms and upon their attitudes, as though with the purpose of revealing that it had been a hand of the Middle Ages which had inscribed them there, and especially the fatal and melancholy meaning contained in them, struck the author deeply. He questioned himself; he sought to divine who could have been that soul in torment which had not been willing to quit this world without leaving this stigma of crime or unhappi ness upon the brow of the ancient church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One of Them There is an Eastern tale - I forget exactly where or by whom told Of a certain poor man, who, being in extreme distress, and sorely puzzled as to how to eke out a livelihood, bethought him to give out that he was a great magician, endowed with the most marvellous powers, amongst others, that of tracing out crime, and detecting the secret history of all guilty transactions. Day after day did he proclaim to the world his wonderful gifts, telling his fellow-citizens what a remarkable man was amongst them, and bidding them thank Destiny for the blessing of his presence. Now, though the story has not recorded whether their gratitude was equal to the occasion, we are informed that the Caliph heard Of the great magician, and summoned him to his presence, for it chanced just at the moment that the royal treasury had been broken into by thieves, and gems Of priceless value carried away. Find out these thieves for me, said the Caliph, or with your own head pay the penalty of their crime. Grant me but forty days, 0 king, cried he, and I will bring them all before you. So saying, he went away, but was no sooner at home and in the solitude Of his own house than he tore his beard, beat his breast, and, humbling his head to the ground, cried out. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Butler in New Orleans In common With the other devotees of the Union and the Flag, Ihad watched the proceedings of General butler in Louisiana With interest and approval; and shared also the indignation with Which they regarded the perverse misinterpretation put upon his measures by the faction Which has involved the Southern States in ruin, and by their neutral allies abroad. Upon the return of General Butler to the North, I wrote to him, saying that I should like to write an account of his administration of the Department of the Gulf, as well as a, slighter sketch of the previous military career of a man Who, Wherever he had been em ployed, has shown an ability equal to the occasion; but that this could not be done, and ought not to be attempted, Without his consent and co-operation. Book The Church s Certain Faith Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Church s Certain Faith Classic Reprint written by George Zabriskie Gray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church's Certain Faith MY dear doctor, It is one of the great disap pointments of my life, that owing to illness I cannot deliver these Lectures, the preparation of which has been a labor of love; for although I did not expect they would be equal to the occasion, I fully realized the opportunity for good which that occasion affords. But their delivery by me being entirely out of the question, as I both know and am told by physicians, I send them as you request, that they may be read by yourself, or one whom you appoint. Yet, even in so doing, there is the further distress to me', that I have not been able to revise the work of the type writer, for I feel that there must be many things of greater or less importance which I must leave to your correction, especially in the first Lecture, which has not even received the amount Of labor bestowed upon the others, and where I rely upon you, not only to correct, but also to condense, as your judgment and taste will indicate. I know of nothing of moment to change as to matter, but I am aware that there are many things in which criticism will call for change as to form. During the summer I hope to be able to put the Lectures into such shape for printing as may render them a little-worthier of their predecessors. Book Jambalaya 1897 Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Jambalaya 1897 Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Tulane University and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jambalaya, 1897, Vol. 2 Tobias Gibson, father of Randall Gibson, was the owner of a large Louisiana estate, and among his other possessions was numbered a delightful summer home near Lexington, Ky. It was in this latter community, the home of Henry Clay, that his distinguished son was born and reared. Randall Gibson graduated from Yale in '53 and was valedictorian of that class. There is an incident of his career there which may be of 110 small interest to college men, and which may also serve as an illustration of his youthful temperament. It is related by one of his class-mates that while delivering the oration which was part of the Class Day programme, although enjoying the closest attention of his audience, Gibson was so overcome by the idea that his performance of the part was not equal to the occasion that he stopped short in the midst of his speech, bowed to his audience and class-mates, and descended from the platform. It is added by the same authority that to him alone, of all those present, had the semblance of such a thought occurred. Book The Case for Woman Suffrage

Download or read book The Case for Woman Suffrage written by Margaret Ladd Franklin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Case for Woman Suffrage: A Bibliography This bibliography of books, pamphlets, and magazine articles dealing with woman suffrage has been prepared by a young college woman, Margaret Ladd Franklin, who graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1908. During her college course she and many of her classmates became deeply interested in the question of woman suffrage. In talking to them and other young college women the President of the National College Equal Suffrage League had occasion to observe that many of the old fashioned arguments most successful in the past seemed to have lost their compelling power, while certain theoretical arguments making a strong intellectual appeal and certain V other practical arguments dealing with modern social conditions seemed to carry instant conviction. In the light of such discussions it seemed desirable that so far as possible all the existing arguments for woman suffrage should be carefully reread and classified from the point of view of college women of to - day, and Miss Franklin was accordingly asked to prepare this bibliography for the College Equal Suffrage League. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Defence of Robert Burns The contents of this pamphlet appeared in the Bulletin on 5th and 19th February, 1898, in reply to two articles purporting to be reviews of Henley Henderson's edition of Burns' works, which had appeared in that journal on 23rd October and 4th December, 1897. The Bulletm's replies to my trenchant criticism were not in my opinion, nor in that of any others qualified to decide, so far as I can learn, equal to the occasion. One, dated March 12th, amounted to this It is true that we have maligned Burns but then he is dead d reply from him is impossible. But the living ought to be complimentary to one another, especially where literary matters are concerned. If that be impossible, let us talk about the weather and the beauty of moonlight among the peaks and gorges of the Blue Mountains.
