Book excerpt: Unfair pay is still prominent in the workforce even after the Equal Pay Act was established, which eliminated salary discrimination solely based on gender. Today, according to the U.S Census Bureau (2008), on average for employees age 16 and older, women earn 77 cents for every $1 men earn for full-time, year-round work. The current study explored potential explanations for disparities in wages based on gender. The current study focused on social comparison and its effects on how individuals perceive themselves regardless of occupation. This study investigated how females made decisions about career expectations and intentions with regard to pay after being primed with masculine traits. To achieve this, the study used an electronic survey that involved three parts. The first part consisted of a priming procedure with three different groups, including a Masculine, Feminine, and Neutral priming group. The second part of the survey involved asking participants about their career expectations and intentions using the Career Expectation Survey. The BEM sex role inventory was used in the third part of the survey to assess masculine and feminine characteristics. Implications from previous research regarding the gender wage gap are discussed.
