Book Equal Pay in Europe

Download or read book Equal Pay in Europe written by Jill Rubery and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2015-10-28 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gender pay implications of payment structures in three European countries, the UK, Italy and Germany, are explored through case studies of nine organisations. Payment practices are found to be embedded within country-specific employment systems and the detailed case studies reveal how different systems result in different levels and forms of gender pay inequality, affecting different groups of women workers. This exploration of payment practices at both the country and the organisation level reveals the variety of obstacles that still exist to the implementation of equal pay.

Book The Gender Pay Gap and Social Partnership in Europe

Download or read book The Gender Pay Gap and Social Partnership in Europe written by Hazel Conley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-06 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gender pay gap (GPG) exists in every European country, but it varies considerably, even in EU member states covered by the same legal principles on pay equality. Part of the variation can be explained by different patterns of social partnership. With current policy pressure to de-centralise collective bargaining and increase the percentage of pay linked to productivity, what role can social partnership play in tackling the GPG? Reporting on the findings of the European Commission funded research project "Close the Deal, Fill the Gap", this book uses an interdisciplinary analysis involving legal, economic, and sociological expertise, to explore the role of social partnership in GPG in Italy, Poland and the UK. Selected on the basis of their contrasting profiles in terms of legal regulation, industrial relations, systems of collective bargaining, coverage of collective agreements, and differing rates of the GPG, the in-depth study provides important insights into the main issues underlying the problem of reducing the gender pay gap which have led to guidelines in the negotiation of arrangements on GPG-related issues. Based on a unique comparative, interdisciplinary and action-oriented esearch project, it will be of great interest to all researchers and advanced students with an interest in women’s representation in the workforce and the gender pay gap, as well as practitioners and policy makers in organisations such as trade unions and employers’ associations.

Book The Gender Pay Gap in Europe from a Legal Perspective

Download or read book The Gender Pay Gap in Europe from a Legal Perspective written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principle of equal pay for men and women for work of equal value has been key to the European Union ever since its foundation. It was laid down in the original Treaty, and brought into practice by several directives. Also the Court of Justice's case law has boosted its importance. Notwithstanding these efforts at the legal level, the average gender pay gap for the 27 EU Member States (17.6 % in 2008) is hardly diminishing. It is against this worrisome background that the European Commission asked its European Network of Legal Experts in the Field of Gender Equality to collect data on national policies, initiatives and legal instruments aimed at tackling the gender pay gap, and to explore potential links between equal pay and other national legal provisions. 33 legal experts of the EU Member States, the EEA countries and the candidate countries took part in a questionnaire that formed the basis for this publication. It analyses a wide variety of national policies, initiatives and legal instruments that aim to combat the gender pay gap and it uncovers a number of unexpected links between the gender pay gap and other parts of the law.

Book Gender and Family in European Economic Policy

Download or read book Gender and Family in European Economic Policy written by Diana Auth and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-13 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection explores how pioneering gender equality policies have shaped women's economic presence in Europe since 2000. Equal pay policies, parental leave reforms, corporate quotas and electoral quotas have raised pressing questions about the effectiveness in promoting equal participation, as researchers quote both quantitative improvement in gender diversity and qualitative lag in cultural change. The chapters in this book present interlocking cross-national and cross-policy comparisons of the three most controversial reforms: equal pay, parental leave, and quotas for political representatives. The contributors address the cultural context in which reforms arose, internally contradictory policies, and the relative effectiveness of fast-track quotas and incentives compared to long-term efforts to change the overall culture of gender. This critical examination of the new millennium's groundbreaking gender policies will appeal to academics and practitioners interested in the progress of gender equality in the economic, political, and social welfare fields.

Book Eu Sex Discrimination Law and the Principle of Equal Pay

Download or read book Eu Sex Discrimination Law and the Principle of Equal Pay written by Anna Grasmik and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Law - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,7, Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg (Rechtswissenschaften), course: Advanced Lectures in EU Economic Law, language: English, abstract: The Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Thomas Hammarberg, said in his speech on 8th March 2011 "Every day women in Europe experience one of the most deep-rooted injustices - being paid less than a man for work of equal value." Equality between women and men is one of the objectives of the European Union. With the aid of legislation, case law and amendments to the contracts it had gradually succeeded to give emphasis to this principle and apply it in the EU. This work will now try to show you this development. In the beginning, there will be a description of legal framework in the EU. This framework essentially bases on Article 157 TFEU and the Directive 2006/54. Afterwards follows the development of case studies by the jurisprudence of the ECJ in more detail. Keep on with the content of Article 157 TFEU with a closer look on the questions: What is pay? What is equal pay for equal work or work of equal value? When exists discrimination? What is the difference between direct and indirect discrimination? "Well come forward, but still long way to go": So the initial assessment of the agreement is to promote equal opportunities between women and men in the private sector. Is it right and more: is it enough? Let's see if this question can be answered at the end of this work.

Book Gender related Policies and Unequal Pay in Central and Eastern Europe

Download or read book Gender related Policies and Unequal Pay in Central and Eastern Europe written by Carolyn Smith Keller and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The European Union (EU) has dramatically influenced the policies and practices of its newest member states. In this paper I look at the role the EU has had on gender-related work and opportunity policies in Central and Eastern European countries and what affects these policies have had on gender wage gap. I attempt testing hypotheses that these new member states vary (a) in the extent to which they implement gender-related policies and (b) in terms of policy outcomes. First, I complete a contextual analysis to show the various factors that surround the generation of equal pay and opportunity policies in Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovenia throughout the processes of market transition and EU accession. Then, I analyze the gender pay gap within these four countries using International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) data and Social Stratification in Eastern Europe (EESS) data in various cross sections between 1987 and 2004. I find that while the EU has been partially successful in homogenizing the legislation within these countries, there are various factors that may promote or deter implementation. Regarding the gender pay gap, I find considerable cross-national differences, with Poland having the largest gender gap and Slovenia the smallest.

Book European Added Value Assessment on the Application of the Principle of Equal Pay for Men and Women for Equal Work of Equal Value

Download or read book European Added Value Assessment on the Application of the Principle of Equal Pay for Men and Women for Equal Work of Equal Value written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women across the European Union bring home 16.2% less than their male counterparts in the EU. This figure is more than just a statistic: it has real-life consequences for the women concerned, for their families and for society at large. The European Parliament firmly believes that reducing the pay gap remains a political priority. It is not only about economic empowerment, it is also a matter of social justice. This EU Added Value Assessment supports the European Parliament's view and takes the view that reducing the gender pay gap, in particular by revising Directive 2006/54/EC, could be very beneficial, not only for individuals but also for society in general. It would help achieve inclusive growth and ensure economic and social cohesion and competitiveness, in line with the objectives set in the Europe 2020 Strategy.
