Book Constructing Affirmative Action

Download or read book Constructing Affirmative Action written by David Golland and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2011-04-22 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1965, when President Lyndon B. Johnson defined affirmative action as a legitimate federal goal, and 1972, when President Richard M. Nixon named one of affirmative action’s chief antagonists the head of the Department of Labor, government officials at all levels addressed racial economic inequality in earnest. Providing members of historically disadvantaged groups an equal chance at obtaining limited and competitive positions, affirmative action had the potential to alienate large numbers of white Americans, even those who had viewed school desegregation and voting rights in a positive light. Thus, affirmative action was—and continues to be—controversial. Novel in its approach and meticulously researched, David Hamilton Golland’s Constructing Affirmative Action: The Struggle for Equal Employment Opportunity bridges a sizeable gap in the literature on the history of affirmative action. Golland examines federal efforts to diversify the construction trades from the 1950s through the 1970s, offering valuable insights into the origins of affirmative action–related policy. Constructing Affirmative Action analyzes how community activism pushed the federal government to address issues of racial exclusion and marginalization in the construction industry with programs in key American cities.

This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Equal Employment Opportunity at the State University of New York: A Report of the New York State Advisory Committee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights Prepared for the Information and Consideration of the Commission The State University of New York (suny) was created in 1948 by the State legislature to develop and administer a statewide system of higher education.1 Since its founding, suny has grown from 29 State-supported but unaffiliated campuses to an organized system of 72 institutions. It is the largest, multilevel, centrally-managed system of public higher education in the United States. The university encompasses a university centers, 2 medical centers, 13 colleges of arts and science, 1 nonresidential college, 5 statutory colleges, 3 Specialized colleges, 6 agricultural and technical colleges, and 38 locally-sponsored community colleges. A total of 12 campuses offer graduate studies at the doctoral level and 22 at the masters level. In 1973 the State University employed persons, of whom were administrative staff and were faculty members. Of the professionals,2 percent were white, percent were black, percent were of Spanish speaking background, and percent were members of other minority groups. About percent were women.3 Clerical and support staff are not within the scope of this report. Suny is governed by a 15-member board of trustees appointed by the Governor with the advice and consent of the State senate. The board is empowered to appoint its own officers, the chancellor, and the central administration staff. The trustees exercise direct control over 29 of the 72 units. Excluded from this direct control are the 5 statutory colleges and 38 community colleges. The five statutory colleges are governed by the board of trustees of the universities under which they operate Cornell and Alfred. The community colleges are governed by their own quasi-independent boards of trustees. The chancellor of the State university is appointed by the board of trustees and has final administrative responsibility for the entire university system. The chancellor is responsible for recommending and implementing policies for the board of trustees, formulating and implementing personnel regulations, offering guidelines for budget and program development, establishing academic priorities, and other matters. The campus presidents have the responsibility for daily administration and the implementation of statewide policies on their campuses. The campus president thus becomes an important figure, both as head of a local unit of the university and as an administrator of systemwide policy. Book Affirmative Action and the University

Download or read book Affirmative Action and the University written by Kul B. Rai and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Affirmative Action and the University is the only full-length study to examine the impact of affirmative action on all higher education hiring practices. Drawing onødata provided by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the U.S. Department of Education?s National Center for Education Statistics, the authors summarize, track, and evaluate changes in the gender and ethnic makeup of academic and nonacademic employees at private and public colleges and universities from the late 1970s through the mid-1990s. Separate chapters assess changes in employment opportunities for white women, blacks, Asians, Hispanics, and Native Americans. The authors look at the extent to which a two-tier employment system exists. In such a system minorities and women are more likely to make their greatest gains in non-elite positions rather than in faculty and administrative positions. The authors also examine differences in hiring practices between public and private colleges and universities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout this impressive and controversial account of the fight against job discrimination in the United States, Paul Burstein poses searching questions. Why did Congress adopt EEO legislation in the sixties and seventies? Has that legislation made a difference to the people it was intended to help? And what can the struggle for equal employment opportunity tell us about democracy in the United States? "This is an important, well-researched book. . . . Burstein has had the courage to break through narrow specializations within sociology . . . and even to address the types of acceptable questions usually associated with three different disciplines (political science, sociology, and economics). . . . This book should be read by all professionals interested in political sociology and social movements."—Donald Tomaskovic-Devey, Social Forces "Discrimination, Jobs and Politics [is] satisfying because it tells a more complete story . . . than does most sociological research. . . . I find myself returning to it when I'm studying the U.S. women's movement and recommending it to students struggling to do coherent research."—Rachel Rosenfeld, Contemporary Sociology
