Book excerpt: "Eppington on the Appomattox" is the story of the founding and evolution from the mid 1700s of Eppington Plantation of Chesterfield County, Virginia. It includes, as well, the associated family history of Eppington's founder, Francis Eppes VI, who married Thomas Jefferson's sister-in-law. The author, noted colonial Virginia researcher and historian Martha W. McCartney, describes the Native American and Tidewater Virginia background of the Eppington lands, identifies the Eppes family's English and colonial American roots, places Eppington's creation in the context of evolving colonial life along the James and Appomattox Rivers, and traces the economic and social forces influencing Eppington's development. McCartney also points out the role of slavery in Eppington's agricultural success; explores the fascinating relationship between the Eppes and Jefferson families, including many Eppington visits and extended stays of Thomas Jefferson and his daughters; reports on details of construction, modification, and expansion of the plantation house itself, which today still stands and is open to limited public visitation; and documents successive Eppington occupants and owners from the Eppes family to the present day, including the Thweatt, Cox, Hinds and Cherry families and public ownership by Chesterfield County government. The book also is amply illustrated and features an extensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 781 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Both incoming and outgoing letters are included, totaling 518 documents printed in full. General themes include Jefferson's financial troubles, which eventually led him to loan himself a large sum of money he was managing for Tadeusz Kosciuszko; his preparations to face a lawsuit stemming from his decision as president to remove Edward Livingston from a valuable property in New Orleans; other legal complications involving his landholdings and the settlement of estates he had inherited long before; his plans to breed merino sheep and share them gratis with his fellow Virginians; and his ongoing interest in the Republican party's success. Highlights include a long list of books on agriculture that Jefferson probably compiled to guide the Library of Congress in its purchases; descriptions of inventions by Robert Fulton and more obscure figures such as the New Orleans engineer Godefroi Du Jareau; Jefferson's draft letter criticizing the Quakers as unpatriotic, much of which he later deleted; the letter in which he ordered a set of silver tumblers that have become known as the Jefferson Cups; and an important treatise on taxation by the distinguished French political economist Pierre Samuel Du Pont de Nemours, published here for the first time.

Book Mr Jefferson s Women

Download or read book Mr Jefferson s Women written by Jon Kukla and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2009-06-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of A Wilderness So Immense comes a pioneering study of Thomas Jefferson's relationships with women, both personal and political. The author of the Declaration of Independence, who wrote the words “all men are created equal,” was surprisingly uncomfortable with woman. In eight chapters, Kukla examines the evidence for the founding father's youthful misogyny, beginning with his awkward courtship of Rebecca Burwell, who declined Jefferson's marriage proposal, and his unwelcome advances toward the wife of a boyhood friend. Subsequent chapters describe his decade-long marriage to Martha Wayles Skelton, his flirtation with Maria Cosway, and the still controversial relationship with Sally Hemings. A riveting study of a complex man, Mr. Jefferson's Women is sure to spark debate.

Book excerpt: In 2007, House Resolution 16 of the 110th Congress named the James River as "America's Founding River." The first permanent English settlement in the New World was made on the banks of the James at Jamestown in 1607, and representative government in America began there in 1619. The river runs for 340 miles entirely in Virginia, from the Allegheny Mountains to Hampton Roads and the Chesapeake Bay. Canal boats, steamboats, and railroads made it a mainstream of commerce and communication for the growing state. While the river's scenic views have remained relatively unchanged since 1607, there is still much to discover along its length through 20 counties, three major cities, and numerous small towns on its way to the sea. With more than 200 images, The James River seeks to raise awareness about this great river and its history while helping to protect and preserve it for the future.
