Book The Complete Works of Horace

Book excerpt: Quintus Horatius Flaccus (December 8, 65 BC - November 27, 8 BC), known in the English-speaking world as Horace was the leading Roman lyric poet during the time of Augustus (also known as Octavian). The rhetorician Quintilian regarded his Odes as just about the only Latin lyrics worth reading: "He can be lofty sometimes, yet he is also full of charm and grace, versatile in his figures, and felicitously daring in his choice of words."Horace also crafted elegant hexameter verses (Satires and Epistles) and caustic iambic poetry (Epodes). The hexameters are amusing yet serious works, friendly in tone, leading the ancient satirist Persius to comment: "as his friend laughs, Horace slyly puts his finger on his every fault; once let in, he plays about the heartstrings".His career coincided with Rome's momentous change from a republic to an empire. An officer in the republican army defeated at the Battle of Philippi in 42 BC, he was befriended by Octavian's right-hand man in civil affairs, Maecenas, and became a spokesman for the new regime. For some commentators, his association with the regime was a delicate balance in which he maintained a strong measure of independence (he was "a master of the graceful sidestep")but for others he was, in John Dryden's phrase, "a well-mannered court slave".

Book Satires and Epistles

Book excerpt: 'What's the harm in using humour to put across what is true?' Gluttony, lust, and hypocrisy are just a few of the targets of Horace's Satires. Writing in the 30s BC, Horace exposes the vices and follies of his Roman contemporaries, while still finding time to reflect on how to write good satire and along the way revealing his own persona to be as flawed and bigoted as the people he attacks. Alongside famous episodes such as the fable of the town mouse and the country mouse, the explosive fart of Priapus, and the grotesque dinner party given by the nouveau-riche Nasidienus, these poems are stuffed full of comic vignettes, moral insights, and Horace's pervasive humanity. They influenced not only Persius and Juvenal but the long tradition of English satire, from Ben Jonson to W. H. Auden. These new prose translations by John Davie perfectly capture the ribald style of the original. In the Epistles, Horace uses the form of letters to his friends, acquaintances, foremen, and even the emperor to explore questions of philosophy and how to live a good life; and in 'The Art of Poetry' (the Ars poetica), he gives advice on poetic style that informed the work of writers and dramatists for centuries. Book The Epodes Satires and Epistles of Horace Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Epodes Satires and Epistles of Horace Classic Reprint written by Francis Howes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epodes, Satires, and Epistles of Horace In fending the following translation into the world, the Editor regrets that it should share the common fate of posthumous publications - that of incompleteness. Happily the deficiency that remains to be supplied to complete a Translation of the works of Horace, consists in that portion of them, the Odes, of which English versifications may be generally thought to be already sufficiently abundant. Yet it is scarcely probable that the Author, had his life and health been spared, would have suffered so (comparatively) small a portion of his arduous task to remain unexecuted. Touching the degree of success which may be thought to attend the present endeavour to convey an accurate perception of the sense and spirit of Horace to the English reader, the Editor is well aware that no observations of his own could obtain a verdict not commanded by the intrinsic merit of the work. He only asks for that indulgence, which is due to every work that lacks the finishing stroke of the hand that first projected it.
