This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of England Under the Anglo-Saxon Kings, Vol. 1 of 2 An epoch of great convulsions would scarcely seem to be consistent with the developement of the higher forms of life. Perhaps my estimate of the Middle Ages, which is rather more favourable than that commonly taken, has been coloured by the same tendency to believe in growth rather than in sudden and violent revolutions. It is difficult to study a literature and laws that are as English as our own in spirit and purpose without feeling that we have inherited good as well as evil from the past. Book History of the English People Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the English People Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by John Richard Green and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Richard Green was an English historian. He was the author of seven books although "History of the English People" was arguably one of his finest. Although Green began his career as a clergyman, he was always an enthusiastic student of history. Ultimately he decided to change his chosen profession, quit the clergy and became the librarian at Lembeth. Writing history was always part of his plan and he began straightaway to bringing those plans to fruition. When he undertook the project that resulted in this book, he began with the thought in mind that there were not enough published and reputable materials about the history of England. "For the conquest of Britain by the English our authorities are scant and imperfect." Therefore, he took it upon himself to complete a comprehensive and well sourced document about English history. While completed later in his life, this book (along with his last of his books), were written during a period of ill health. Due to this, his wife, Alice Stopford, helped complete his writing when he was too ill to continue. That means that some of this book is written by her hand as well which makes it an interesting exploration of England and perhaps the first one written by both a man and a woman (although she is not given author credit). Only the reader can determine if Green was truly successful in his quest to achieve a complete work (with verifiable and strong sources) about the life and history of the English People. His work stands the test of time as a monument to the life and dedication of one man, relentless in his quest to pursue his dreams and ultimately make the world a better place. Book History of the English People Vol 1 of 5 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the English People Vol 1 of 5 Classic Reprint written by John Richard Green and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the English People, Vol. 1 of 5 IT was a favourite wish of my husband's to see English History interpreted and illustrated by pictures which should tell us how men and things appeared to the lookers-on of their own day, and how contemporary observers aimed at representing them. This new edition of his book is an attempt to carry out such an idea. It has seemed most fitting to choose for the purpose the work of the writer who by the brilliance of his historic imagination has recovered for Englishmen many regions of the past left waste and neglected, and brought to light costly treasures that had long lain hidden in some of its most obscure corners. The Short History, with its vivid realization of all that goes to make up the life of a People, lends itself in a singular way to illustrations which are themselves the work of the people century by century, and the wisdom of the historian is constantly justified as the details of some vivid description, or the significance with which some in cident is clothed, or the new measure and proportion given to facts that before his time were common and despised, are finely emphasized by the work of old scribes or artists to whom all these things were present realities. Book History of England From the Earliest to the Present Time Vol 1 of 5

Download or read book History of England From the Earliest to the Present Time Vol 1 of 5 written by Sir Edward Shepherd Creasy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of England, From the Earliest to the Present Time, Vol. 1 of 5: In Five Volumes To do SO would require not five, but fifty volumes. A full English History is certainly a desideratum in our literature, and in our apparatus for political life. But, even if it existed, a book on the plan of the present one would not be useless. Where a large long book is read by tens, a book of moderate size will be read by hundreds. But it must be a real History and to be this, it must omit nothing that is essential for clear knowledge and sound judgment; and it must be something more than a dry compendium of dates and facts, or a series of disjointed essays. It must have animation as well as accuracy. It must have unity and entirety of organism and purpose and it must have artistic proportions. Moreover, even as the biography of an individual is valueless without some knowledge of those with whom he had dealings, and of the society in which he moved, it is necessary to accompany the history of any one State with sketches of other States, and of the general progress of events in the civilised world. All this is to be done. Whether I have done or can do it, is, of course, a very different matter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of England During the Early and Middle Ages, Vol. 2 The student will perceive at a glance, that I have confined myself exclusively to the political side of history. In the chapter on the English Church, for in stance, I have not attempted to sketch the variations of religious thought, or even to appropriate the labours, by which I have tried to profit, of Professor Brewer and Professor Stubbs, on the inner life of the great religious orders. It is necessary to my plan that I should treat such matters only in their results on secular society and those who have leisure and inclination for fuller re searches can easily refer to the sources I have indicated. It is difficult to be quite consistent in these matters, but, at the hazard of occasional meagreness, I have thought it better to confine myself to a single subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of England, Vol. 1 of 2 Britain, and in wmch their political and social life took the form which it still retains. The centuries of administrative organization which stretch from Ecgberht to Edward the First, the age of full national development which extends from Edward's day to our own, only become intelligible to us when we have fully grasped this age of national formation. I cannot but feel, therefore, that it is no slight misfortune that such a period should remain comparatively unknown, and that its struggles, which were in reality the birth-throes of our national life, should be still to most English men, as they were to Milton, mere battles of kites and of crows.
