Book excerpt: Excerpt from Epochs in the Life of Jesus: A Study of Development and Struggle in the Messiah's Work Springs, Mo., July, 1906, to an audience composed of ministers and a large and intelligent body of other Christian workers. The assembly requested the publication of the lectures. It is hoped that as pub lished they may be useful to some who desire a positive presentation of the career of Jesus in the light of modern knowledge and in full sympathy with the position given to Christ in the Gospels. No attempt is here made to tell the story of the life of Jesus, save as a brief summary now and then is necessary to the interpretation of that life. The at tention is rather called to the movement and climac teric power in the career of Christ. The historic forces of that life seem narrow from one point of view, but the current runs deep and swift. The turning points in the life of Christ are brought out sharply with less accent on other things, so that one may the better feel the titanic struggle that Jesus had with ecclesiastical tyranny and bigotry. If the reader can thus realize Jesus, he will find the Gospels luminous with fresh light. The lumber of learning is all left out here, that the attention of the reader may be focussed on Christ, who battled for human freedom in the most heroic of all conflicts. He won the freedom of the human spirit at the great est possible cost. The Gentiles can now indeed see Jesus without throwing any preachers into a panic. Book The Life of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint written by Heinrich Ewald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ Even in the period next after this violent stifling, this mysterious stillness of the new Spirit in the world lasts on until it irresistibly penetrates it ever more strongly, and then soon both Jews and heathens say enough of it, when they had already lost the opportunity of being able to know most accurately about Christ. Thus Flavius Josephus is the only non-christian historian of the first century we possess who speaks of Christ. In the first indeed of his two great works - the history of the Jewish War - he did not speak of Him, he had no need in respect of the principal subject of it. But we cannot see how he, in the Antiquities, should have neglected to speak, however briefly, of Christ and His followers; as there he mentions much far less important, and that work professes to give a general history of the people, according to all its aims, various divisions, and manifold crises. Had he also in this work said nothing of Christianity, that could only be explained from a want of clear views on the subjects which had so completely fettered him, that he preferred to be silent on a matter so imperfectly known to him. He had certainly, when he wrote his work for the roman-greek world, a secret horror of every thing Messianic, and Christianity must have appeared to him, as to all the Jews of his views, something incomprehensible; and' besides, as it was felt how much this last division had injured the Jews, it must have been a subject disagree able and repugnant. But these grounds seem insuflicient for his entirely overlooking it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Events in the Life of Christ: In Twenty-Five Studies Arranged for Daily Reading and Weekly Class Work This course of study aims to present within reason able compass and in clear outline the great events in the life of the Master. A short and easy course on such a theme is impossible, but an earnest effort has been made to Simplify the undertaking and yet fur nish to the earnest student all needed help. Special attention has been given to the outline, not only of the ministry as a whole but for each of its periods. The more one studies the life of Jesus the more clearly it appears that that life was an orderly progress toward its goal. While the chronology is often uncertain, the order is logical, almost inevitable. When this order is once fixed in the mind, each great event fits into its own place and only there. In this course the outlines preceding each period, the topical arrangement of each subject and the reviews all serve to emphasize this order which the casual reader of the gospels so Often misses. Book The Life of Jesus Christ According to the Gospel History Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Jesus Christ According to the Gospel History Classic Reprint written by A. J. Maas and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ According to the Gospel History This "Life of Jesus Christ" is intended for readers who have neither leisure nor opportunity to consult many Commentaries and works on ancient history; henee the Author has endeavored to mark off clearly historical facts and dogmas of faith from human conjecture and pious belief. The text is entirely framed out of the words of the gospels, in such a manner that nothing is omitted and nothing added. With regard to chronology, the harmonies of Tischendorf, Friedlieb, Coleridge. Lohmann, Fillion, Gilmore and Abbott have been consulted. Where the chronological order is doubtful, it has been indicated as such in the notes; in most cases the various arrangements of events as found in other authors, have been added. Whenever different opinions exist regarding the most important historical or doctrinal difficulties of the text, nearly all opinions are briefly mentioned. The more probable explanations are emphasized, while the untenable ones are rejected. In the character and arrangement of its notes, the book follows the gospel harmony of Jansenius Gandavensis, although it does not lav claim to the completeness of this latter work. The nature of the book has made it necessary to collate many commentaries and Lives of Christ. Not to mention the classical commentators on the Gospels, whose interpretations are looked upon as common property, the Author must acknowledge his obligations to the works of Schuster, Reischl, Corluy, Schaff, Milligan, Fillion, Geikie, Farrar, Sepp, Stanley, Fouard and several other writers of recent date. The remarks, it will be observed, are more frequently explanatory than devotional. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
