Book excerpt: Excerpt from Epoch-Making Contributions to Medicine, Surgery, and the Allied Sciences Being Reprints of Those Communications Which First Conveyed Epoch-Making Observations to the Scientific World Together With Biographical Sketches of the Observers In the mass of scientific literature which appears year after year there occurs, very occasionally, an article which presents the results of experiment or investigation that prove epoch-making. These articles, though recording masterpieces of scientific research, are buried with valueless or ephemeral writings. Certain of my teachers, in presenting a subject at clinics and lectures, had. for the inspection of the students, the article which communicated such observations as first placed the subject upon a sound scientific basis. Subsequently, in my own teaching I followed this custom. There has thus resulted a collection, begun some twelve years ago, of epoch-making articles, a part of which is gathered into the present volume. Upon first thought one is disposed to conclude that to-day such communications would be obsolete and of historic value only, but on reading the articles the fact becomes evident that the work and observations were so thoroughly and accurately done in the first instance that the teaching, practice, and terminology of to-day are either the same as when first communicated or based directly on these foundations. In many instances, subsequent writers have merely paraphrased the statements of the original observers. Indeed, one may go further and say that some of the errors of today are the result of disregarding or misquoting the facts clearly set forth in these original treatises. As an example, Jenner's definite direction regarding the technique of vaccination, if adhered to, would prevent many of the infections and shocking ulcerations seen even in our own day. Again, in Laennce's writings is to be found much that would clear the confusion regarding physical signs which teachers to-day discuss without even referring to the observations of this master-mind. Within 30 years, in the 2030 decade, six powerful 'drivers' will converge with unprecedented force in a statistical spike that could tear humanity apart and plunge the world into a new Dark Age. Download or read book A Peacebuilding Tool for a Conflict Sensitive Approach to Development written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) works with a number of developing member countries facing fragile and conflict-affected situations---circumstances that complicate economic development, and might include domestic or international conflict, ethnic tensions, vulnerability to natural disasters, or a confluence of these factors. ADB piloted the peacebuilding tool in Nepal as a conflict-sensitive approach, a key to effective and safe implementation of projects in the country's post-conflict context. The peacebuilding tool is an analytical tool for assisting project team leaders and social experts in understanding the local context, and in identifying potential risks to implementation of development projects that are linked to social conflicts, as well as in formulating mitigation measures for addressing these risks.

Book Professionalism in Medicine

Download or read book Professionalism in Medicine written by Delese Wear and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-08-18 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of essays, the authors don’t argue with those attributes deemed to be the essence of professionalism in medicine. Instead, they ask questions of the discourse from which they arise, how the specialized language of academic medicine disciplines has defined, organized, contained, and made seemingly immutable a group of attitudes, values, and behaviors subsumed under the label "professional" or "professionalism." This collection aims to be a critical text, one that questions the profession’s beliefs about the nature of its work and how such beliefs are enacted (or not) in medical education, particularly as they fuel the professionalism discourse.
