Book Republic of Women

Download or read book Republic of Women written by Carol Pal and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-07 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Republic of Women recaptures a lost chapter in the narrative of intellectual history. It tells the story of a transnational network of female scholars who were active members of the seventeenth-century republic of letters and demonstrates that this intellectual commonwealth was a much more eclectic and diverse assemblage than has been assumed. These seven scholars - Anna Maria van Schurman, Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia, Marie de Gournay, Marie du Moulin, Dorothy Moore, Bathsua Makin and Katherine Jones, Lady Ranelagh - were philosophers, schoolteachers, reformers and mathematicians. They hailed from England, Ireland, Germany, France and the Netherlands, and together with their male colleagues - men like Descartes, Huygens, Hartlib and Montaigne - they represented the spectrum of contemporary approaches to science, faith, politics and the advancement of learning. Carol Pal uses their collective biography to reconfigure the intellectual biography of early modern Europe, offering a new, expanded analysis of the seventeenth-century community of ideas.

Book A Guide to Neo Latin Literature

Download or read book A Guide to Neo Latin Literature written by Victoria Moul and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-16 with total page 877 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin was for many centuries the common literary language of Europe, and Latin literature of immense range, stylistic power and social and political significance was produced throughout Europe and beyond from the time of Petrarch (c.1400) well into the eighteenth century. This is the first available work devoted specifically to the enormous wealth and variety of neo-Latin literature, and offers both essential background to the understanding of this material and sixteen chapters by leading scholars which are devoted to individual forms. Each contributor relates a wide range of fascinating but now little-known texts to the handful of more familiar Latin works of the period, such as Thomas More's Utopia, Milton's Latin poetry and the works of Petrarch and Erasmus. All Latin is translated throughout the volume.

Book Pseudo martyr

Download or read book Pseudo martyr written by John Donne and published by Scholars' Facsimiles & Reprints. This book was released on 1974 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Donne published Pseudo-Martyr in 1610, at a moment of extreme political tension between London and Rome. It was an attempt to convince English Roman Catholics that they could remain loyal to the spiritual authority of Rome and still take the oath of allegiance to the British Crown and avoid persecution. Donne, brought up as a Catholic and trained as a lawyer, argued his case by appealing to precedents from the body of canon and civil law in existence since the beginning of Christian civilization. Pseudo-Martyr is thus a vast survey of relations between church and state from the days of the early church to 1600. Donne also drew detailed historical parallels between crises in medieval and contemporary times and the particular dilemma of Catholics in England to prove that a compromise of loyalties was possible and acceptable.

Book History of Law and Other Humanities Views of the legal world across the time

Download or read book History of Law and Other Humanities Views of the legal world across the time written by Valerio Massimo Minale and published by Dykinson S.L.. This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of essays presented here examines the links forged through the ages between the realm of law and the expressions of the humanistic culture. We collected thirty-five essays by international scholars and organized them into sections of ten chapters based around ten different themes. Two main perspectives emerged: in some articles the topic relates to the conventional approach of law and/in humanities (iconography, literature, architecture, cinema, music), other articles are about more traditional connections between fields of knowledge (in particular, philosophy, political experiences, didactics). We decided not to confine authors to one particular methodological framework, preferring instead to promote historiographical openness. Our intention was to create a patchwork of different approaches, with each article drawing on a different area of culture to provide a new angle to the history being told. The variety of authorial nationalities gives the collection a multicultural character and the breadth of the chronological period it deals with from antiquity to the contemporary age adds further depth of insight. As the element that unites the collection is historiographical interpretation, we wanted to bring to the fore its historical depth. Thus for every chapter we organized the articles in chronological order according to the historical context covered.Looking at the final outcome, it was interesting to learn that more often than not the connection between law and humanities is not simply a relation between a specific branch of the law and a single field of the humanities, but rather a relation that could be developed in many directions at once, involving different fields of knowledge, and of arts and popular culture. We are grateful to Luigi Lacchè for his contribution to this collection. His essay outlines the coordinates of the law and humanities world, laying out the instruments necessary for an understanding of the origins of a complex methodology and the different approaches that exist within it.This project is the result of discussions that took place during the XXIII Forum of the Association of Young Legal Historians held in Naples in the spring of 2017. The book was made possible thanks to the advice and support of Cristina Vano. The Editors
