Book Gastrointestinal Nematodes of Sheep and Cattle

Download or read book Gastrointestinal Nematodes of Sheep and Cattle written by Ian Scott and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-11-02 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique resource for all those interested in the impact of worms on livestock, the anthelmintics used to get rid of them and the emerging problem of anthelmintic resistance. This book provides an over-arching view of past, present and suggested future strategies for control of gastrointestinal nematode parasites in sheep and cattle. The book begins with descriptions of the biology of gastrointestinal nematodes, the harm they cause to the host and their economic impact. The main body of the book deals with the control of worms, focusing on the use of anthelmintic drenches. The relationship between drenching practices and the development of drug resistance is discussed, as well as resistance management. The authors also break new ground by discussing alternative options for worm control, including: nutritional interventions, biological control, breeding for desirable genetics and artificially improving immunity to infection. They also offer useful recommendations for program development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This successful book, now in its third edition, continues to provide a comprehensive introduction to the role of epidemiology in veterinary medicine. Since the publication of the second edition there has been considerable expansion in the application of veterinary epidemiology: more quantitative methods are available, challenges such as the epidemic of foot-and-mouth disease in Europe in 2001 have required epidemiological investigation, and epidemiological analyses have taken on further importance with the emergence of evidence-based veterinary medicine. In this edition: Completely revised and expanded chapters; Increased attention given to the principles and concepts of epidemiology, surveillance, and diagnostic-test validation and performance; Many examples are drawn from both large and small animal medicine, and from the developing as well as the developed world This paperback edition includes a new section on risk analysis. Veterinary Epidemiology is an invaluable reference source for veterinary general practitioners, government veterinarians, agricultural economists and members of other disciplines interested in animal disease. It will also be essential reading for undergraduate and intermediate-level postgraduate students of epidemiology.

Book Chemotherapy of Parasitic Diseases

Download or read book Chemotherapy of Parasitic Diseases written by W.C. Campbell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Have a chew of dulie," said Crubog . . . "What is it?" asked Potter, half-suspiciously. "Seaweed. " "Is it good for the virility? . . . " "And what is the virility?" asked the old man. "Does it make you more attractive to women?" Potier shouted in his ear. "No. " "What is it good for then?" "WortnS. " "Worms?" "Intestinal worms. You'll never again pass a worm if you eat a fistful of dulse first thing in the morning and last thing at night. " "If it's an anthelmintic, I'll try a spot of it," said Potter. - From Bogmail, a novel by Patrick McGinley (1981) With modern techniques of chemical isolation and structure determination, the old distinction between herbal and chemical remedies has largely been broken down. By chemotherapy we now mean simply the treatment of disease by drugs (the word medicines has unhappily been eclipsed). The distinction made between chemotherapy and non chemical therapy (e. g. , radiation, physiotherapy, surgical intervention, immu nomodulation) remains useful despite some minor overlapping. The present work thus deals with drugs and their use in parasitic disease. (Since we are dealing with the treatment of incipient as well as established infection, chemotherapy subsumes chem oprophylaxis as well as chemotherapeusis per se. ) Definition of parasitism as a biological modus vivendi, although important in itself, need not concern us here. We need simply delimit the scope of the book, and that is easily done.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Veterinary Clinical Parasitology, Eighth Edition, prepared under the auspices of the American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists (AAVP), emphasizes the morphologic identification of both internal and external parasites of domestic animals. Focusing on the tests and information most relevant to daily practice, the book describes accurate, cost-effective techniques for diagnosing parasitic infections in animals. Including clear, easy-to-find information on the distribution, life cycle, and importance of each parasite, Veterinary Clinical Parasitology offers more than 450 images to aid with diagnosis. The Eighth Edition includes a new chapter on immunologic and molecular diagnosis, increased coverage of ticks and new sections on identification of microfilariae and larvae in diagnostic samples. The new edition also features expanded information on quantitative egg counts, detection of anthelmintic resistance and identification of ruminant strongylid larvae. Additional improvements include many new images throughout the book, revised taxonomic information, a new layout featuring tabs by section to improve user-friendliness, and a companion website offering the images from the book in PowerPoint at www.wiley.com/go/zajac. Veterinary Clinical Parasitology is a highly practical benchside reference invaluable to clinicians, technicians, and students.

Book Parasites of Cattle and Sheep

Download or read book Parasites of Cattle and Sheep written by Andrew B. Forbes and published by CABI. This book was released on 2020-11-17 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding parasite biology and impact is essential when giving advice on parasite control in farm animals. In the first review devoted to parasites of domestic cattle and sheep alone, this book provides in-depth, focused advice which can be tailored to individual farms. It considers the impact of parasites, both as individual species and as co-infections, as well as epidemiological information, monitoring, and diagnostic procedures. Supported throughout by diagrams and photos to aid diagnosis, it also reviews the basis for control measures such as the responsible use of parasiticides, adaptive animal husbandry and other management practices.

Book An Epidemiologic Study of the Seasonal Incidence of Nematode Parasites in Sheep on Irrigated Pastures in Central Oregon

Download or read book An Epidemiologic Study of the Seasonal Incidence of Nematode Parasites in Sheep on Irrigated Pastures in Central Oregon written by Susan Marie Matlock and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The epidemiology of nematode infections in ewes and lambs on irrigated pastures was investigated during one reproductive cycle in a commercial operation in Central Oregon. Primary objectives were to determine the sources of parasitism, the effect on lamb weight gains, and the effectiveness of control procedures in minimizing the detrimental effects of parasitism. Methodology included fecal nematode egg counts, animal necropsies and the use of tracer lambs. The relationships between blood trace mineral levels, parasitism and suboptimal weight gain in lambs and calves were also examined. High pasture burdens of infective larvae were found in spring and early summer from overwintering larvae and in late summer from autoinfestation by ewes and lambs. Lamb weight gain from March until mid-July was 0.48 lb/head/day. From mid-July until September when the study terminated, lamb weight gain declined ( -0.03 to 0.28 lb/head/day). Parasite burdens were low to moderate early in the grazing period, but increased markedly during the mid-July to September period, despite monthly deworming of the flock. It appeared that parasite burdens, high summer temperatures and the lack of shade, and possibly low cobalt and selenium levels were responsible for the late summer decline in weight gain. Evaluation of control measures indicated that intensive deworming prior to parturition eliminated arrested or inhibited larvae in the ewes. The periparturient relaxation of resistance, however, permitted development of infective larvae acquired from the pre- and post-lambing pastures. Maturation of these larvae caused a marked rise in post-parturient egg per gram counts of the ewes with subsequent relatively high rates of pasture contamination. Monthly deworming of the flock was moderately effective in reducing parasite burdens and pasture contamination. Alternate grazing of pastures by cattle and sheep, and ad lib. feeding of phenothiazine in salt were not effective as control measures.
