Book Gender and Genre in the Folklore of Middle India

Download or read book Gender and Genre in the Folklore of Middle India written by Joyce Burkhalter Flueckiger and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Gender and Genre in the Folklore of Middle India, Joyce Burkhalter Flueckiger analyzes six representative Indian folklore genres from a single regional repertoire to show the influence of their intertextual relations on the composition and interpretation of artistic performance. Placing special emphasis on women’s rituals, she looks at the relationship between the framework and organization of indigenous genres and the reception of folklore performance. The regional repertoire under examination presents a strikingly female-centered world. Female performers and characters are active, articulate, and frequently challenge or defy expectations of gender. Men also confound traditional gender roles. Flueckiger includes the translations of two full performance texts of narratives sung by female and male storytellers respectively.

Book Examining War and Conflict around the World

Download or read book Examining War and Conflict around the World written by David Jerome Ph.D. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-12-02 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses 10 issues pertaining to war and conflict, such as ethics of war, national security, and refugees, and examines how countries around the world are facing these issues. To truly explore war and conflict, one must consider why the peoples and the leaders of the world behave the way that they do toward one another. For instance, why are refugees, in a variety of circumstances, treated so inhumanely in times of conflict and unrest through no fault of their own? How are women and those in the LGBTQ community treated in terms of service to their country? Examining War and Conflict around World includes ten chapters, each addressing a specific issue relating to war and conflict as it pertains to a variety of countries, including anti-Americanism, military robots and drones, nuclear weapons and proliferation, and torture. Each chapter begins with an introduction to the issue. Following the chapter introduction, each chapter highlights that issue in eight countries. Chapters provide historical perspective, but the book addresses each of the issues in a contemporary context. This work will provide an overview for all readers of ten very important topics that address matters relating to war and conflict in the twenty-first century.

Book Historical Dictionary of Rwanda

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Rwanda written by Aimable Twagilimana and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blessed with natural beauty and rich vegetation, Rwanda is often called the 'land of a thousand hills' (le pays des mille collines). A proud people, the Banyarwanda (Rwandans) possess a centric view of the world, believing that Imana (God) favors Rwanda, as conveyed through the saying 'Imana yirirwa ahandi igataha i Rwanda' (God spends the day some place else but goes back home to Rwanda to sleep) and the fact that Rwanda means 'the universe.' However, this idyllic view of Rwanda sharply contrasts with the sad history of ethnic strife that has unfolded in the country since the 1950s: the 1959 Hutu Revolution followed by years of anti-Tutsi pogroms, undemocratic regimes, the civil war of 1990-1994, and, more significantly, the April-July 1994 genocide against the Tutsi and Hutu who opposed the killings. This new edition of Historical Dictionary of Rwanda, through its chronology, introductory essays, appendixes, maps, bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on important persons, places, events, and institutions and significant political, economic, social, and cultural aspects, provides an important reference on this central African country.

Book Soldiers In A Storm

Download or read book Soldiers In A Storm written by Philip Frankel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soldiers in a Storm: The Armed Forces in South Africa's Democratic Transition is a study of the role of the military in the creation and development of South Africa's new post-apartheid system. Philip Frankel asserts that the armed forces played a far greater role in the end of apartheid than is currently acknowledged in the literature, and that the relatively peaceful negotiations that ended apartheid would not have been possible without the participation of the South African National Defense Force and two major liberation armies.Frankel also examines the topics of military disengagement, civilianization, post-authoritarian political behavior on the part of militaries, and the process of democratic consolidation. He also discusses how many of these themes have been explored in the context of Latin America, and he points out that this is the only book that places these themes within the context of South Africa. This is an important case study with universal implications.

Book American Standard

Download or read book American Standard written by Ross Warner and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-09-03 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They’ve sold more than 20 million albums, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and they’re one of Homer Simpson’s favorite bands—but even today, fifty years after they first formed, Cheap Trick remains to many a club band with a cult following. They certainly started out that way, with a carnival-like stage show featuring four perfectly mismatched characters: guitarist Rick Nielsen, in bowtie, sweater, and baseball cap, stood next to blonde dreamboat Robin Zander, while the mysterious, chestnut-haired bassist Tom Peterson held down the bottom end with drummer Bun E. Carlos, never seen without his cigarette or tie. American Standard: Cheap Trick from the Bars to the Budokan and Beyond tells the unlikely story of the band’s path to greatness, from their origins in Rockford, Illinois to their massively successful live album At Budokan to the many, many ups and downs that followed. This is a rollicking tale of artistic genius, rock excess, hilarious misbehavior, chance encounters with music’s biggest names, and international stardom that brought new meaning to the phrase “big in Japan.” Drawing on exhaustive research and interviews, American Standard gives an intimate look at a truly original band—whether you consider them rock icons or criminally underrated,
