Book excerpt: In order to fully appreciate the author’s ideas for creating this work, an understanding of an epic poem is necessary. An epic poem consists of a lengthy narrative. It is about a segment of time and place in which someone (a hero or such) conveys his thoughts, feelings and experiences into verse. The verse is not a simple one. It is based on dactylic hexameter as in Homer’s “Iliad” and “Odyssey” from ancient times, or Dante’s “Divine Comedy”. Dante and Virgil, the Roman poet, traveled through hell, purgatory and paradise in order to reach God. Another example is Virgil’s “Aeneid”. In this work, Mr. Bucci describes the thoughts and feelings as he experienced them in his coming to America. He included the people he met in his journey through life. Mr. Bucci greatly admired the land that he had become a part of. He struggled through the hardships and trials of life, including the “great depression” of 1929. The hopes and dreams of everyone, he felt were dependent on each individual’s freedom to reach out to the opportunities that America could offer them. His work offers hope and encouragement to all who would listen to his words of wisdom. This poem was how he saw the current times in America, the land that he valued and loved so much.

Book A History of Epic Poetry Post Virgilian Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Epic Poetry Post Virgilian Classic Reprint written by John Clark and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Epic Poetry (Post-Virgilian) The following pages are meant to exhibit the different national renderings of a variety of poetry that perhaps more than any other has given status to the literature possessing a great specimen of it, and supremacy to the poet of that specimen. I have restricted my formal examination of poems to those of the post - Virgilian period. So much excellent criticism has been made on Homer and Virgil that it seemed presumption on my part, as well as a needless increase of the bulk of the book, to adventure a full statement of the epical position of these two princely poets. It is clear, however, that no history of epic poetry could be called satisfactory that did not contain some reference to these poets - that did not, indeed, to a definite if limited extent, take into account and appraise their work. I have therefore in the Introduction devoted some pages to a consideration of certain aspects of the epical quality of their respective poems. Other pre-Virgilian epics than those of Homer claim, and have received, a certain amount of attention. A study like mine, to reach true conclusions, needs observation not only of the great masters of epic, but also of humbler poets whose good intentions have not been reinforced by potent inspiration.
