He combs the works of twenty-six ancient authors for information about ancient Ephesus, from its beginnings to the end of the biblical era. Readers can now picture for themselves this second of the two major centers of Paul's missionary work, with its houses, shops, and monuments, and above al the world-renowned temple of Artemis. After presenting the textual and archaeological evidence, Murphy-O'Connor leads the reader on a walk through St. Paul's Ephesus and describes the history of Paul's years in the city. Although Ephesus has been a ruin for many hundreds of years, readers of this book will find themselves transported back to the days of its flourishing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the long-abandoned glories of the Greek city of Ephesus in what is now Turkey. While Jerusalem has been called the cradle of Christianity, Ephesus was surely its nursery. For one momentous generation, Ephesus was the literary focus of early Christianity, and by its compilations influenced Christianity more than Jerusalem, Antioch, or Rome. This ancient city played a pivotal part in the formation of the New Testament with at least six of its books having a connection there. Paul ministered in Ephesus longer than in any other city and legend has it that John lived the last of his very long life in Ephesus. These same legends also say that Timothy became the city's first bishop and was martyred, and where the runaway slave Onesimus would eventually succeed him. However, these books were written to a world and culture that was vastly different from our own. Without understanding life situations of the intended recipients that Paul and John were writing into, we can easily read into them a meaning not necessarily intended by the author. This book will give you that understanding without the intrusion of specialist terms.

Book excerpt: Ephesus was one of the largest and most influential cities in the Roman Empire. It served as the chief city of the Roman province of Asia. The city was also home to one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the colossal Temple of Artemis. Many notable figures from history passed through the city, thus Ephesus often found itself in the middle of regional disputes and political conflicts. It was this same city that also served as a base of operations for the Apostle Paul's ministry to the province of Asia. Paul spend two to three years calling this city home, engaging the people and the surrounding pagan culture. So when Paul wrote his Biblical letter to the Ephesian church he founded, he wrote to a city that he was familiar with and knew held influence over the entire region. What can be learned when not only the book of Ephesians is studied, but the history of the city is considered, along with insights from both Roman and Greek culture, both of which shaped the city? Can we begin to see allusions to this city in Paul's letter to Ephesus? What is to be made of some present-day assertions that Ephesians was not written to the city of Ephesus, nor even written by the Apostle Paul? A Journey Through Ephesus begins with the history of Ephesus, then provides a narrative commentary on Ephesians, and concludes with an examination of what happened to the church Paul founded. The entire context of The Greco-Roman culture of the city begins to emerge when we understand Paul's purpose and audience in this comprehensive study of the book of Ephesians.

Book excerpt: Fragments of wisdom from the ancient world In the sixth century b.c.-twenty-five hundred years before Einstein--Heraclitus of Ephesus declared that energy is the essence of matter, that everything becomes energy in flux, in relativity. His great book, On Nature, the world's first coherent philosophical treatise and touchstone for Plato, Aristotle, and Marcus Aurelius, has long been lost to history--but its surviving fragments have for thousands of years tantalized our greatest thinkers, from Montaigne to Nietzsche, Heidegger to Jung. Now, acclaimed poet Brooks Haxton presents a powerful free-verse translation of all 130 surviving fragments of the teachings of Heraclitus, with the ancient Greek originals beautifully reproduced en face. Book Encyclopedia of Ephesus Ephesos

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Ephesus Ephesos written by Justin Corfield and published by . This book was released on 2015-12-16 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ephesus, in modern-day Turkey, was one of the great cities of the ancient world, and the location of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. A largely Greek city, it attracted large numbers of pilgrims going to the temple, traders and visitors. Alexander the Great captured Ephesus, and Hannibal fled there after being forced to leave Carthage; and in 88 BC, members of the Roman population were massacred in what became known as the Asiatic Vespers. Romans who went to Ephesus include Sulla, Cicero, Mark Antony and Cleopatra, and Strabo. The city has an important place in Christianity with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, settling there, and St. Paul also visiting Ephesus on two occasions. In AD 262, an earthquake destroyed much of the city, and a Gothic invasion soon afterwards heralded a decline which was already underway as the harbour was silting up. Nevertheless the Fourth Ecumenical Council was held in Ephesus in AD 431. Work by a British engineer and archaeologist in the 1860s led to the uncovering of the site of the Temple of Artemis, with the site of the House of the Virgin Mary identified in 1891. Soon afterwards Austrian archaeologists began to excavate the site, and work by them and others continues to the present day, with the city now attracting many tourists. This book is the first encyclopedia of Ephesus and it contains more than 360 illustrations.

Book A Hermit s Cookbook

  • Author : Andrew Jotischky
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2011-06-02
  • ISBN : 1441159916
  • Pages : 114 pages

Download or read book A Hermit s Cookbook written by Andrew Jotischky and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06-02 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did medieval hermits survive on their self-denying diet? What did they eat, and how did unethical monks get around the rules? The Egyptian hermit Onuphrios was said to have lived entirely on dates, and perhaps the most famous of all hermits, John the Baptist, on locusts and wild honey. Was it really possible to sustain life on so little food? The history of monasticism is defined by the fierce and passionate abandonment of the ordinary comforts of life, the most striking being food and drink. A Hermit's Cookbook opens with stories and pen portraits of the Desert Fathers of early Christianity and their followers who were ascetic solitaries, hermits and pillar-dwellers. It proceeds to explore how the ideals of the desert fathers were revived in both the Byzantine and western traditions, looking at the cultivation of food in monasteries, eating and cooking, and why hunting animals was rejected by any self-respecting hermit. Full of rich anecdotes, and including recipes for basic monk's stew and bread soup -- and many others -- this is a fascinating story of hermits, monks, food and fasting in the Middle Ages.

Book excerpt: Guild of Food Writer’s Awards, Highly Commended in ‘Specialist Subject Cookbook’ category (2022) André Simon Awards shortlisted (2022) "A beautiful book, and one which makes me want to cultivate my garden just as much as scurry to the kitchen." — Nigella Lawson "At its core this book is about cooking, but it's an essential and valuable resource for folk who love to grow their own herbs and cook. Sorted by individual herbs with detailed notes on how to grow and use them, it's going to be a book I will turn to a lot over the years." — Nik Sharma Herb is a plot-to-plate exploration of herbs that majors on the kitchen, with just enough of the simple art of growing to allow the reader to welcome a wealth of home-grown flavours into their kitchen. Author Mark Diacono is a gardener as well as a cook. Packed with ideas for enjoying and using herbs, Herb is much more than your average recipe book. Mark shares the techniques at the heart of sourcing, preparing and using herbs well, enabling you to make delicious food that is as rewarding in the process as it is in the end result. The book explores how to use herbs, when to deploy them, and how to capture those flavours to use when they might not be seasonally available. The reader will become familiar with the differences in flavour intensity, provenance, nutritional benefits and more. Focusing on the familiars including thyme, rosemary, basil, chives and bay, Herb also opens the door to a few lesser-known flavours. The recipes build on bringing your herbs alive – whether that’s a quickly swizzed parsley pesto when short of time on a weekday evening, or in wrapping a crumbly Lancashire cheese in lovage for a few weeks to infuse it with bitter earthiness. With a guide to sowing, planting, feeding and propagating herbs, there are also full plant descriptions and their main culinary affinities. Mark then looks at various ways to preserve herbs including making oils, drying, vinegars, syrups and freezing, before offering over 100 innovative recipes that make the most of your new herb knowledge.
