Book Who s Afraid of the Big Enlargement

Download or read book Who s Afraid of the Big Enlargement written by Tito Boeri and published by Centre for Economic Policy Research. This book was released on 2002 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The initial enthusiasm of many EU citizens at the 'return to Europe' of former members of the Soviet bloc has turned to anxiety at the realization of the possible adverse consequences of enlargement. Potential undesirable effects of enlargement, in particular for labour markets and social conditions, can be met by appropriately designed policies which are so far not in place or planned. Rather than legitimizing such fears, politicians and policy-makers must dispel them by leading the EU and its members to adopt these measures. Enlargement also offers the EU a window of opportunity to accelerate unavoidable reforms of structural policies, agricultural policies and their financing. These are the premises of this new CEPR Policy Paper. The authors outline the key economic and social implications of the prospective accession of the Central and East European countries into the European Union and propose policy recommendations for EU enlargement.

Book EU Law Stories

    Book Details:
  • Author : Fernanda Nicola
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2017-05-29
  • ISBN : 1108210562
  • Pages : 661 pages

Download or read book EU Law Stories written by Fernanda Nicola and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-29 with total page 661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through an interdisciplinary analysis of the rulings of the Court of Justice of the European Union, this book offers 'thick' descriptions, contextual histories and critical narratives engaging with leading or minor personalities involved behind the scenes of each case. The contributions depart from the notion that EU law and its history should be narrated in a linear and incremental way to show instead that law evolves in a contingent and not determinate manner. The book shows that the effects of judge-made law remain relatively indeterminate and each case can be retold through different contextual narratives, and shows the commitment of the European legal elites to the experience of legal reasoning. The idea to cluster the stories around prominent cases is not to be fully comprehensive, but to re-focus the scholarship and teaching of EU law by moving beyond the black letter and unravel the lawyering techniques to achieve policy results.
