Book Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation Second Edition

Download or read book Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation Second Edition written by Roland N. Pittman and published by Biota Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This presentation describes various aspects of the regulation of tissue oxygenation, including the roles of the circulatory system, respiratory system, and blood, the carrier of oxygen within these components of the cardiorespiratory system. The respiratory system takes oxygen from the atmosphere and transports it by diffusion from the air in the alveoli to the blood flowing through the pulmonary capillaries. The cardiovascular system then moves the oxygenated blood from the heart to the microcirculation of the various organs by convection, where oxygen is released from hemoglobin in the red blood cells and moves to the parenchymal cells of each tissue by diffusion. Oxygen that has diffused into cells is then utilized in the mitochondria to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of all cells. The mitochondria are able to produce ATP until the oxygen tension or PO2 on the cell surface falls to a critical level of about 4–5 mm Hg. Thus, in order to meet the energetic needs of cells, it is important to maintain a continuous supply of oxygen to the mitochondria at or above the critical PO2 . In order to accomplish this desired outcome, the cardiorespiratory system, including the blood, must be capable of regulation to ensure survival of all tissues under a wide range of circumstances. The purpose of this presentation is to provide basic information about the operation and regulation of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as the properties of the blood and parenchymal cells, so that a fundamental understanding of the regulation of tissue oxygenation is achieved.

Book Cryopreservation and low temperature biology in blood transfusion

Download or read book Cryopreservation and low temperature biology in blood transfusion written by C.Th. Smit Sibinga and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of this 14th International Symposium on Blood Transfusion is closely related to the work and scientific contributions of the Dutch cryobiology pioneer Dr. Herman W. Krijnen of the Dutch Red Cross Central Laboratory. Dr. Krijnen was known and respected in the national and interna tional blood transfusion community as an extremely competent scientist and a beloved and admired colleague. Dr. Krijnen was intentionally honoured with the invitation to open this symposium on cryopreservation and low temperature biology in blood transfusion and be the guest of honour at this event. Unfortunately, Dr. Krijnen suddenly died on the first of June 1989. In honour and mem ory of Dr. Krijnen this symposium will therefore be dedicated to him. Since the lOth International Symposium on Blood Transfusion in 1985 highlighted the theme of "Future developments in blood banking", major changes have occurred in the blood banking world. Most of these changes were forced upon the Blood Banks by the fear of spreading AIDS through contaminated donations. This not only led to the wide spread testing of blood, but also to a more appropriate counselling of the community and the blood donors in specific. Additionally, virus inacti vation techniques were introduced for those components derived from multiple donations and intended for a regular transfusion in haemophi lia patients and others.

Book Automation in blood transfusion

Download or read book Automation in blood transfusion written by C.Th. Smit Sibinga and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this symposium the Red Cross Blood Bank Groningen-Drenthe affirms its well known reputation as an organizer of symposia of high standard and quality. Several important aspects of bloodbanking have been discussed in the past. The Blood Bank here is a specialist in its own field. Administrative processes in respect of the donor, information processes, the preparation of the blood and the laboratory process are automatized. New developments in these fields are undeway that you will certainly identify and investigate. I do hope that you will come to conclusions from which we can learn and get better results. As general manager of the Development and Investments Company for the Northern Netherlands - NOM - for several reasons I am very much interested in the outcome of this symposium. In the first place I am proud that the Red Cross Blood Bank Groningen Drenthe is doing its utmost to be excellent in regard of research, education and bloodprocessing. In being so, the Blood Bank can produce spinn-offs for healthservices and the related industry.

Download or read book Blood Use in Cardiac Surgery written by N. Friedel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiac surgery has developed dramatically since the first open-he art operations were performed in the mid 1950s. Although the improvement of surgical technique, extracorporeal circulation, and postoperative management has contributed to a marked reduction of morbidity and mortality, the development of cardiac surgery to its present state would not have been possible without blood substitution by homologous donor blood. Only 20 years ago, open-heart operations required an average of 8 units of blood preserves. The excessive need of donor blood in those early days was mainly due to premature surgical technique, insecure control of anticoagulation, severe blood trauma by extracorporeal circulation, and the lack of retransfusion technologies that would have allowed the reuse of shed mediastinal blood. The introduction of new technologies, such as normovolemic hemodilution, in traoperative autotransfusion, postoperative return of shed mediastinal blood, and predonation of autologous blood has greatly reduced donor blood requirements. At present the majority of routine coronary artery surgical procedures can be performed without any blood transfusion. Blood loss, however, may be considerable in patients undergoing complex valve surgery or reoperations, as they often require several units of transfused blood. Blood conservation has now become an area of major interest for the cardiac surgeon. This increased concern is caused by infectious complications of blood transfusion, in particular hepatitis and, more recently, AIDS.

Book Transfusion Medicine Quo Vadis What Has Been Achieved What Is to Be Expected

Download or read book Transfusion Medicine Quo Vadis What Has Been Achieved What Is to Be Expected written by C.Th. Smit Sibinga and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: th It is a great pleasure for me to open the jubilee 25 International Symposium on Blood Transfusion here in Groningen. This symposium is co-sponsored by the World Health Organization and is being held under the auspices of the ISBT and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Mr Walter Schwimmer. The patronage was granted with great pleasure for several reasons. First of all, Dutch experts are very active in our Committees and have largely contributed in developing the Council of Europe principles in the blood area. Secondly, the Council of Europe is active today in the area of blood transfusion due to a tragic event, which occurred in 1953 in the Netherlands; following a flooding many of the blood products given for assistance' could not be used due to incompatibilities and differences in labelling. Some words to present the Council of Europe since the organisation is sometimes confused with institutions ofthe European Union: The organisation has been founded in 1949 to establish the principles of democracy and rule of law all over Europe. Since 1989, the year of the fall of the Berlin wall and the opening up of the iron curtain, these principles could be extended to the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Today this makes the Council of Europe the only pan-European organisation with 41 Member States thus representing more than 750 million people.

Book Blood Filtration and Blood Cell Deformability

Download or read book Blood Filtration and Blood Cell Deformability written by John A. Dormandy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H. J. Meiselman From the theoretical studies of Dr. Skalak, it is clear that white cells can significantly influence the pressure-time profile of a red cell/white cell suspen sion, and that the presence of even a small amount of relatively rigid white cells can have a profound effect on the filtration pressure during the latter portion of a filtration experiment. Conversely, white cell effects, regardless of their relative rigidity, are shown to have only minimal effects during the very early (i. e. , 0-2 seconds) phases of the filtration process. Dr. Chien's experimental data support these theoretical studies, in that white cells of different mechan ical properties exhibit different pressure-time curves; pressure-time data for mixtures of leucocytes show shapes which can be predicted from the behavior of relatively homogeneous cell populations. The insensitivity of the very early portions of the filtration process to white cells is again reflected in the calculations made by Dr. Hanss. Using the nominal dilutions, white cell concentrations and the total volume of filtered cell suspension, he indicates that usually less than 1 pore out of 100 is liable to blockage by white cells. He thus concludes that, at the 1% accuracy level, initial filtration data should not be affected by mechanical pore blockage by white cells. Experimental studies by Dr. Lowe and Dr. Stuart question the WBC insensitivity of the early portion of the filtration process. Using a constant flow system, Dr.

Book Recognition of M leprae antigens

Download or read book Recognition of M leprae antigens written by Tom Ottenhoff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those who have had the privilege to visit the Sistine Chapel may remember the fres co painting of Jesus curing the leper (Marcus 1, 40-45). It seems that leprosy was not only known 2000 years ago but was also recognized as an important problem. Unfortunately, little has changed since then. Although leprosy is mainly known as an "import" disease in Europe and North America, in the greater part of the world it remains the problem it has always been, one of a stigmatizing disease comparable to the modern day pestilence, namely AIDS. Who could forget Durer's etch of a leper walking with a clapper to an nounce his presence, or the heartbreaking stories of patients, especially those with lepromatous leprosy, ousted by their own families to become social outcasts forced to beg for their food. This attitude is slowly changing and with this change the name of Mahatma Ghandi will always be connected and remembered.

Book Risk Management in Blood Transfusion The Virtue of Reality

Download or read book Risk Management in Blood Transfusion The Virtue of Reality written by Cees Smit Sibinga and published by Springer. This book was released on 1999-10-31 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is composed of four major sections: The perception of risk, where authorities from the field of environmental psychology and risk analysis describe the backgrounds and mechanisms of cognitive behavior and the effects of emotional and publicity factors on perception and acceptance of risk. The management of infection-defined risk, the core of public and political anxiety. Here the book illustrates how safe the current blood supply has become over the past decade in at least the majority of industrialized countries in the world. The management of immune-defined risks has been the Cinderella of blood transfusion and transfusion medicine up till now. Risk management in clinical practice: optimal versus maximal is the section where the real virtue of reality comes to life through valuable contributors by authors from the field of clinical blood banking, heavily involved consumers organizations (WFH), the Cochrane Institute of Medical Sciences and National Health Services Center for reviews and dissemination, and international policy makers and regulative bodies like the Council of Europe and the European Commission. When the reader is first confronted with a poem illustrating the reality of virtue, written by one of the editors noted for his talent in anecdotal medical poetry, the scene is set for the virtue of reality in the management of risk in blood transfusion.
