Book excerpt: Cette thèse traite de l'évolution conjointe des sphères économiques et environnementales. En particulier, elle s'intéresse aux interactions de long-terme entre l'évolution de capital humain, qui mesurent par ailleurs le développement et les changements environnementaux. L'objectif principal est de proposer des mécanismes économiques qui pourraient expliquer la distribution mondiale des performances environnementales observées à un niveau agrégé. Dans cette optique, je met en exergue une double causalité allant du développement économique vers l'environnement, et inversement. D'une part, le développement économique peut engendrer des externalités négatives, mais permet aussi plus de dépenses de protection environnementale; d'autre part, l'environnement affecte Ie capital humain. Cette thèse de compose de trois chapitres. Le premier s'intéresse aux interactions entre la santé des enfants, les choix d'éducation et l'environnement. Le deuxième se concentre sur un autre canal reliant la qualité environnementale au capital humain: l'espérance de vie. Finalement, le dernier chapitre offre un role clef aux anticipations des agents quant à l'état futur de l'environnement, notamment lors du processus de décision quant à l'éducation. Dans tous ces chapitres, l'interdépendance des décisions environnementales et économiques conduit à l'émergence d'équilibres multiples. Cette propriété nous permet d'expliquer l'apparition de trappes à pauvreté environnementale, qui sont caractérisées par une faible niveau de capital humain et une qualité environnementale dégradée.
