Book excerpt: "Lively and nuanced."--David McCally, author of The Everglades: An Environmental History "As we work to repair the damage we have done to fragile ecosystems, this book tells us how much we have lost and how little time we have left before it is completely destroyed. Important reading for all interested in saving what is left of vanishing natural Florida."--Steven Noll, coauthor of Ditch of Dreams: The Cross Florida Barge Canal and the Struggle for Florida's Future "Osborn has finally gifted the long misunderstood Indian River Lagoon with the discerning scientific insights and cultural perspective it deserves."--Bill Belleville, author of The Peace of Blue: Water Journeys "Unwinds the natural and human histories that have made the region both popular and fragile."--Evan P. Bennett, author of When Tobacco Was King: Families, Farm Labor, and Federal Policy in the Piedmont Stretching along 156 miles of Florida's East Coast, the Indian River Lagoon contains the St. Lucie estuary, the Mosquito Lagoon, Banana River Lagoon, and the Indian River. It is a delicate ecosystem of shifting barrier islands and varying salinity levels due to its many inlets that open and close onto the ocean. The long, ribbon-like lagoon spans both temperate and subtropical climates, resulting in the most biologically diverse estuarine system in the United States. Nineteen canals and five man-made inlets have dramatically reshaped the region in the past two centuries, intensifying its natural instability and challenging its diversity. Indian River Lagoon traces the winding story of the waterway, showing how humans have altered the area to fit their needs and also how the lagoon has influenced the cultures along its shores. Now stuck in transition between a place of labor and a place of recreation, the lagoon has become a chief focus of public concern. This book provides a much-needed bigger picture as debates continue over how best to restore this natural resource.

Book Environmental Restoration

Download or read book Environmental Restoration written by John Berger and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-06-22 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Restoration is the product of a ground-breaking conference on ecological restoration, held in January 1988 at the University of California, Berkeley. It offers an overview from the nation's leading experts of the most current techniques of restoration, including examples of the complex and subtle biological interactions we must understand to ensure success. Chapters cover restoration of agricultural lands, barrens, coastal ecosystems, prairies, and range lands. Additional sections address temperate forests and watersheds, mined lands, soil bioengineering, urban issues including waste treatment and solid, toxic, and radioactive waste management. The book also covers restoration of aquatic systems, includes chapters on strategic planning and land acquisition, and provides examples of successful projects.

Book Ecology Conservation and Restoration of Chilika Lagoon India

Download or read book Ecology Conservation and Restoration of Chilika Lagoon India written by C. Max Finlayson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-31 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book chronicles the decades-long work of studying, analyzing, and reversing the environmental pressures that threatened India’s Chilika Lagoon, the largest brackish-water lagoon in the region, and the second largest in the world. Designated as one of India’s first Ramsar Sites in 1981, Chilika Lagoon continued to degrade for a decade longer. Then, the Chilika Development Authority (CDA) was established to gather information and devise a restoration plan that benefits the ecosystems of the lagoon, with sensitivity to the needs and livelihoods of local communities. Expert contributors detail the work of analysis, planning and implementation, including extensive coverage of such topics as: Devising a plan for implementing Ramsar wise use guidelines Sedimentologic, chemical, and isotopic impacts Hydrodynamics and salinity Runoff and sediment in watersheds of the Lagoon's Western Catchment Long-term analysis of water quality and continued water quality monitoring Bio-optical models for cyclone impact assessment Studies of geomorphology, land use, and sedimentary environments Spatiotemporal assessment of phytoplankton communities Creation of a post-restoration scenario for fish and fisheries Assessing status of waterbirds, species diversity and migration patterns The result was a major hydrological intervention to re-establish hydrological and salinity regimes, biodiversity, and fish catches, and help protect the livelihood of lagoon-dependent communities. The story of the rehabilitation and management of Chilika Lagoon demonstrates that it is possible to halt and reverse the encroachment and degradation of wetlands, to restore biodiversity and to provide benefits for large numbers of people. Ecology, Conservation, and Restoration of Chilika Lagoon goes beyond scientific research articles to explore institutional and governance issues, political ecology, and the Ramsar Convention’s guidelines for ecosystem restoration. The book will benefit researchers, wetland managers, government policy makers and more general readers concerned with restoration and conservation of wetlands around the planet.

Book excerpt: - Written for the non-scientist - Introduces key lagoon ecosystems and species - Reviews their present states and causes for decline - Introduces organizations working hard to restore lagoon health - Provides an action plan for all concerned citizens Coastal areas worldwide are most at risk from the disastrous impacts of over-development and climate change, none more so than our eastern Florida lagoons. Although we generally accept that human activities stress our environment, many of us remain unaware of how severe these impacts are locally and the enormity of our potential losses. Most importantly, we tend to think there is little as individuals we can do to reverse course. Written for the non-scientist, this book is a wake-up call on both themes. It looks first at important lagoon ecosystems, their interdependence, and their typically rapid and recent declines. It then moves on to more hopeful notes, introducing some of the many organizations dedicated to restoring a healthy lagoon environment, and new technologies being deployed to assist that effort. It concludes with a call to action, listing organizations to support and activities to engage in, allowing all concerned citizens to do their part in saving an amazing ecological treasure.

Book Progress Toward Restoring the Everglades

Download or read book Progress Toward Restoring the Everglades written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-04-28 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the first in a congressionally mandated series of biennial evaluations of the progress being made by the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP), a multibillion-dollar effort to restore historical water flows to the Everglades and return the ecosystem closer to its natural state, before it was transformed by drainage and by urban and agricultural development. The Restoration plan, which was launched in 1999 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the South Florida Water Management District, includes more than 40 major projects that are expected to be completed over the next three decades. The report finds that progress has been made in developing the scientific basis and management structures needed to support a massive effort to restore the Florida Everglades ecosystem. However, some important projects have been delayed due to several factors including budgetary restrictions and a project planning process that that can be stalled by unresolved scientific uncertainties. The report outlines an alternative approach that can help the initiative move forward even as it resolves remaining scientific uncertainties. The report calls for a boost in the rate of federal spending if the restoration of Everglades National Park and other projects are to be completed on schedule.
