Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being One Of The Earliest Living Forms Originated On This Planet, Blue Green Algae (Cyanophytes/Cyanobacteria) Have Successfully Lived Through A Variety Of Environmental Abiotic Stresses, Such As Extreme Heat Of The Primitive Earth, Anaerobiosis Prevalent At The Time Of Their Origin To Subsequent Oxygeny For Which They Have Been Responsible. Over The Years They Have Adapted Themselves To Several Man-Made Stresses Like Various Types Of Industrial Effluents Of Different Chemical Make-Up, Chemical Fertilizers, Pesticides, Heavy Metals, Etc. For These Reasons They Are Considered As An Appropriate Model System For Studies Of Stress And Adaptive Responses. The Book Contains Information On Ecophysiological Responses Of Blue Green Algae In Habitats Polluted By Different Types Of Industrial Effluents, E.G. The Untreated Effluent Released From A Molasses Distillery, Sponge-Iron Industry And A Fertilizer Factory. Interaction Of Nitrogen Fixing Blue Green Algae In Rice Fields To Different Commercial Pesticides Has Also Been Described. The Blue Green Algal Forms Colonizing The Exposed Surface Of Archaeologically Important Temples And Monuments Of Various Regions Of India Is Given. Survival Strategies Of Blue Green Algal Species On The Exposed Rock Surfaces As Well As In The Crust On Dried Soils Of Rice Fields Under Temperature And Desiccation Stress Has Been Presented. Ecophysiology Of Thermal Blue Green Algae Has Also Been Described. It Would Serve As A Reference Book For Researchers In Universities And Research Institutions Working On Adaptation Of Plants And Microorganisms To Environmental Stresses And Also For Botany, Microbiology And Environmental Science Students At M.Sc. Level.

  • Author : Wayne Carmichael
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

Download or read book The Water Environment written by Wayne Carmichael and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conference on The Water Environment: Algal Toxins and Health was held at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, on June 29, 30, July 1, 2, 1980. Its principal objectives were to bring together, for the first time, researchers, public officials and interested parties in order to present and discuss what is known about algal toxins. The conference concentrated almost exclusively on toxins and toxic blooms of blue-green algae (Cyanobacteria). Since the most common Cyanobacteria bloom forming species are also the ones most likely to produce toxins, they are a problem in the maintenance of safe animal and human water supplies. While poison ings by Cyanobacteria involve mainly domestic and wild animals, they may also be responsible for cases of human gastroenteritis and con tact poisoning. Even though human poisonings by Cyanobacteria have historically not been a widespread problem, continued deterioration of our recreational and municipal water supplies suggests that blooms of non-toxic and toxic Cyanobacteria blooms will increase. In addi tion to studies on their role as disease agents, there is basic research being done on their pharmacological properties to determine their mode of action and usefulness as tools in the study of basic neuromuscular mechanisms. These papers were centrally typed for reproduction as camera ready copy. Each paper was reviewed and edited by at least two per sons of the editorial committee. This volume is organized into five major sections: 1.

Book Algal Adaptation to Environmental Stresses

Download or read book Algal Adaptation to Environmental Stresses written by L.C. Rai and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algae, generally held as the principal primary producers of aquatic systems, inhabit all conceivable habitats. They have great ability to cope with a harsh environment, e.g. extremely high and low temperatures, suboptimal and supraoptimal light intensities, low availability of essential nutrients and other resources, and high concentrations of toxic chemicals, etc. A multitude of physiological, biochemical, and molecular strategies enable them to survive and grow in stressful habitats. This book presents a critical account of various mechanisms of stress tolerance in algae, many of which may occur in microbes and plants as well.

Book Toxic Cyanobacteria in Water

Download or read book Toxic Cyanobacteria in Water written by Ingrid Chorus and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-03-08 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyanobacterial toxins are among the hazardous substances most widely found in water. They occur naturally, but concentrations hazardous to human health are usually due to human activity. Therefore, to protect human health, managing lakes, reservoirs and rivers to prevent cyanobacterial blooms is critical. This second edition of Toxic Cyanobacteria in Water presents the current state of knowledge on the occurrence of cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins as well as their impacts on health through water-related exposure pathways, chiefly drinking-water and recreational activity. It provides scientific and technical background information to support hazard identification, assessment and prioritisation of the risks posed by cyanotoxins, and it outlines approaches for their management at each step of the water-use system. It sets out key practical considerations for developing management strategies, implementing efficient measures and designing monitoring programmes. This enables stakeholders to evaluate whether there is a health risk from toxic cyanobacteria and to mitigate it with appropriate measures. This book is intended for those working on toxic cyanobacteria with a specific focus on public health protection. It intends to empower professionals from different disciplines to communicate and cooperate for sustainable management of toxic cyanobacteria, including public health workers, ecologists, academics, and catchment and waterbody managers. Ingrid Chorus headed the department for Drinking-Water and Swimming-Pool Hygiene at the German Environment Agency. Martin Welker is a limnologist and microbiologist, currently with bioMérieux in Lyon, France.
