Book excerpt: This state-of-the-art reference book includes comprehensive coverage of the biology and control of African, Asian and South American trypanosomiasis ("sleeping sickness") in man and animals. It describes recent research developments in the biology and molecular biology of trypanosomes (the protozoan parasite) and their vectors, and methods in diagnosis and control, such as trapping tsetse fly vectors. Different sections of the book are devoted to biology of trypanosomes, vector biology, epidemiology and diagnosis, pathogenesis, disease impact, chemotherapy and disease control, and vector control. The book contains contributions from leading experts from Europe, North and South America, and Africa.

Download or read book Biodiversity written by N. Biedinger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biodiversity, sometimes simply understood as "diversity of species", is a specific quality of life on our planet, the dimensions and importance of which have just lately been fully realized. Today we know that "biological diversity is a global asset of incalculable value to present and future generations" (Kofi Annan). Biodiversity is spread unequally over the world: in fact, the main share of biological resources worldwide is harboured predominantly by the so-called developing countries in the tropics and sub tropics. Therefore, Biodiversity - A Challenge for Development Research and Policy was chosen as the title for an international conference which was held in Bonn in 1997 as one of the first major events organized by the then newly established North-South Centre for Development Research (ZEF) at Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universitat Bonn (Germany). Since the ZEF, founded by the Senate of the University of Bonn in 1995, has played a central role in turning Bonn into a centre for international cooperation and North-South dialogue. The Centre is a product of the Bonn Berlin agreement of July 1994 which was adopted to offset the effects caused by the Parliament and much of the Government moving to Berlin. It fits in well with the double strategy to strengthen Bonn's position as an interna tional science arena and as an eminent place for development policy and the national and supranational agencies dealing with this issue.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been little harmonisation of the processes involved in the handling and release of sterile insects after production in mass rearing facilities. There are no standard guidelines available to transfer this technology to FAO or IAEA member countries that want to embark on sterile insect technique (SIT) activities. There is also increased interest by the private sector in investing in sterile insect production and/or other SIT activities, and these harmonized guidelines on the post-production phase will facilitate SIT application and foster the commercialization of the SIT.This guideline resulted from two FAO/IAEA consultants' meetings with representatives of relevant SIT programmes, the first held in Sarasota, Florida, United States of America (April 2004) and the second in Vienna, Austria (August 2005). It has identified a number of gaps in knowledge as well as procedures that are often based on conventional wisdom but which need scientific verification or optimization.

Book excerpt: This is an examination of the effects of pesticide technology on various species of wildlife. Primary, secondary and tertiary exposure pathways are examined as well as forensic techniques for determining pesticide related mortality in wildlife. Case studies illustrating successful approaches and potential pitfalls in designing both laboratory and field studies are included. Lethal and non-lethal sampling techniques are interfaced with analytical chemistry instrumentation to provide scientifically sound data for quantifying pesticide residues in wildlife and approaches to data analysis and prediction of pesticide exposure risks are examined. The regulatory aspects of monitoring wildlife pesticide exposure and protecting wildlife from unintended exposure also receive treatment.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much research effort is currently underway to improve and implement the area-wide control of insect pests, in order to minimize the use of pesticides and protect the environment. This volume is an outcome of two major international meetings, the FAO/IAEA International Conference on Area-Wide Control of Insect Pests, and the Fifth International Symposium on Fruit Flies of Economic Importance, both held in June 1998 in Penang. More than 300 pages were presented, but this volume includes the 91 considered the most valuable by an international review panel. Papers have been edited, revised and updated as necessary. Contributors include respected research workers from all over the world. The volume will be an indispensable reference volume for workers in agricultural, medical and veterinary entomology.

Download or read book Control and Surveillance of Human African Trypanosomiasis written by and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2013 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides information about new diagnostic approaches, new therapeutic regimens and better understanding of the distribution of the disease with high-quality mapping. The roles of human and animal reservoirs and the tsetse fly vectors that transmit the parasites are emphasized. The new information has formed the basis for an integrated strategy with which it is hoped that elimination of HAT will be achieved. The report also contains recommendations on the approaches that will lead to elimination of the disease. Human African Tryponosomiasis (HAT) is a disease that afflicts populations in rural Africa, where the tsetse fly vector that transmits the causative trypanosome parasites thrives. There are two forms of HAT: one, known as gambiense HAT, is endemic in West and Central Africa and causes over 95% of current cases; the other, known as rhodesiense HAT, is endemic in East and southern Africa and accounts for the remainder of cases. The presence of parasites in the brain leads to progressive neurological breakdown. Changes to sleep-wake patterns are among the symptoms that characterize the disease, also known as "sleeping sickness". Eventually, patients fall into a coma and die if not treated. Different treatments are available against parasites present in the haemolymphatic system (first stage) and those that have entered the brain (second stage). Currently, lumbar puncture is required to select the appropriate drug.
