Book Ports and the Environment

Download or read book Ports and the Environment written by Meifeng Luo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ports are a vital part of the global economy, connecting the world through maritime transport networks, promoting international trade, and supporting global economic growth. However, port communities are increasingly concerned about the local environmental problems associated with air pollution from increased port activities. Efforts are increasingly being made into the reduction of human-induced changes to the global environment, and one of the target areas is to reduce air emissions from international shipping. It appears that management of the port sector has entered into a new era, not only because environmental concerns are increasingly being expressed surrounding the ports themselves, but also because many of the new environmental measures associated with the shipping trade have to be enforced when ships are in port. Ports and the Environment assembles research focusing on the management of ports, and the environmental issues associated with both the shipping trade and the ports themselves. By examining contemporary concerns from the perspectives of maritime policy, port management, and industrial efficiency, this book will be provide important reference for future research and policy-making in this area. This book was originally published as a special issue of Maritime Policy & Management.

Book Environmental Sustainability at Mexican Ports

Download or read book Environmental Sustainability at Mexican Ports written by Ignacio López Pérez and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable development is a topic that has gained a lot of momentum in the logistics field; organizations from the maritime and port sector have started to focus on the environmental side of sustainability and take measures to control the impact of their operations on future generations. Environmental Management Systems (EMS) are generic tools for controlling the performance of an organization towards the environment; these have been also tailored to the port sector resulting in port specific EMSs. However little research covers how strong the commitment of the port sector to environmental sustainability is, and the effectiveness of EMS in developing countries, especially in Mexico. So far studies in the manufacturing sector indicate an opportunistic approach predominates in this country. This study first employs the Five-Factor-Model and the NEP-Scale to analyze the importance of environmental sustainability to the port administration of a major Mexican cargo port (Veracruz); then it performs a gap analysis to study the comprehensiveness of its monitoring requirements and determine possible improvements based on their activities; and finally, it formulates a framework applicable to the basis-EMS standard to address the real monitoring requirements of each port in the country. The results determine that the port administration has a genuine commitment to environmental management and controls the activities with environmental impact, but there is room for improving the comprehensiveness of its EMS. It is also possible to formulate a framework that simplifies existing research and standards, allowing the port administration to reach two goals: fully assimilate the system and environmental objectives into the organizational culture, and enhance the scope of the environmental aspects and impacts according to the monitoring needs of the port. The main challenge faced by the port administration is the collaboration from tenants, since it is not an environmental authority, it is essential to find attractive incentives for tenants to share information about the environmental performance in order to assess how really the port affects the environment.

Book excerpt: In this comprehensive introduction to the issues surrounding the use of the marine environment, the contribution of the maritime sector, specifically shipping and ports, to global environmental impacts is explored in depth. Using an ecosystem-based approach, the author reviews these impacts and considers their relative significance. The book begins with a broad overview of the marine and coastal environment, including ecological, social, political and legal aspects of its resources and its uses. It presents the dynamic and interdisciplinary nature of environmental management as a means of mitigating or adapting to environmental impacts, placing it in the context of the maritime industry. The author proceeds to explore the environmental impacts of the maritime industry in detail, with in-depth treatments of the shipping and ports sectors. The book then outlines a range of practical tools employed in maritime environmental management such as risk assessment, impact assessment and environmental accounting. It describes the nature and role of relevant organisations, both national and international, and includes the latest regulations and agreements as well as highlighting a range of corporate responses such as management systems and corporate sustainability reporting. Effective marine management and responsible use of the marine environment by the maritime sector is increasingly demanded by society. This book considers the success of current systems in place, including the questions of value and specific mechanisms of funding. Finally, a horizon scanning view of marine and maritime environmental management summarises possible future developments and scenarios facing the maritime world.

Book Port Strategy for Sustainable Development

Download or read book Port Strategy for Sustainable Development written by Elvira Haezendonck and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, most large port hubs include the circular economy transformation challenge, together with smart digitalization and Internet of Things (IoT), in their strategic priorities. However, many ports do not seem to have progressed beyond incremental, small-scale sustainable innovations or the support of rather fragmented sustainability initiatives. The challenges are complex, since ports do not only have to reconsider their own core activities but also their role in the supply chain of shippers, to lift themselves out of the linear lock-in. Opportunities are also created, and port authorities and businesses need to embrace circular learning and turn these projects into sustainable business models. This strategic change or refocus requires new insights into innovative governance and business frameworks, the link between strategy and commercially viable business models, systems innovation, intensified stakeholder collaboration and co-creation, altered traffic segments and hinterland focus, amongst others. These Special Issue articles address current CE transition concerns salient to port strategists and managers, such as first strategic changes towards circular ports, building awareness on the importance of sustainability data and available space, and how port authorities can develop circular business models.

Book Environmental Planning and Management

Download or read book Environmental Planning and Management written by Christian Ndubisi Madu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2007 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on environmental planning and management. Environmental problems are not purely scientific; some of the major problems deal with poor management and the inability to involve people in environmental decision making process. The approach taken in this book is to review environmental problems as they are affected by poor planning and management. Understanding of management issues involved will help to get top management to buy into environmental management. The tendency is for top management to view environmental management efforts as expensive and wasteful to an organization. However, when top management is exposed to the high cost of doing nothing and the lack of competitiveness as a result of poor environmental quality, it is more likely to buy into the idea of environmental quality and work towards achieving sustainable goals.

Book Sustinable Operations in Small Ports a Special Case of Environmental Management

Download or read book Sustinable Operations in Small Ports a Special Case of Environmental Management written by Ariadna Sans Català and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ports are, centres of life and progress not only for the town they belong to, but also for the entire area they influence. Regardless of the type of activity practised there, a port is movement, exchange, dynamism, and wealth. In order for all this to be possible, a port's installations, infrastructures, and services must keep up with current needs so that the port remains vital. However, the existence of the ports always implies an environmental impact on water, air or soil. One of the most important challenges on the port sector is find the situation in which the port is able to meet its own needs without endangering its own future. Over the last years the port sector has demonstrated a positive and pro-active response to its environmental liabilities and responsibilities through the development of tools and methodologies developed specifically to deliver appropriate management options8. The first environmental management initiatives in ports areas began with the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) on 1993 as a response to the need of European ports to be represented in Europe. ESPO's mission is to influence public policy in the EU in order to achieve a safe, efficient and environmentally sustainable European port sector. Over the years, there has been increasing evidence that ports that adopts environmental management systems (EMS) for their operations can realize significant benefits as: · Minimization of environmental impacts · Demonstrate compliance with legislation · Reducing costs with the efficient use of recourses · Maintain a good public image However, there are multiple possibilities of response, from just compliance with legislation to archive high standards of environmental protection. Many ports, simply using an EMS system to evaluate and develop an effective environmental management program will be sufficient based on available resources or activities at the port. However, some other ports may decide that they need to use, and possibly become certified as in compliance with specific EMS, such as ISO 14000 or EMAS. It is a fact that all ports are unique; they vary in size, commercial activities, location, cargo handled, organizational structure and regulation. However, the environmental challenge is common for all, regardless of size. Then, the question is, is one management system suitable for all ports?
