Office of the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment and published by Environment. This book was released on 1988 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " ... In order for environmental management to take account of the principles of the Treaty, the Commissioner has found that it must address the three main themes of partnership, tribal rangatiratanga, and active protection. The principal change implied for the existing environmental management system is a greater share of decision-making power between Crown/Pakeha and maori partners to the Treaty and greater cognisance of Maori cutlural values in the protection of resources and other taonga. The holistic approach of traditional Maori environmental management has much to offer, and is receiving belated recognition of its essential similarity to the ecological approach. ..."--Executive summary p. 1.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains the role of New Zealand’s environmental agencies and regulatory legislation, taking in the impact of international agreements and treaties. It traces the fortunes of sustainable policy approaches and analyzes the activities of the public agencies charged with managing the environment. Moving on to a detailed thematic status report on New Zealand’s environment, it examines rural, freshwater, coastal, oceanic, atmospheric and urban zones. Finally, chapters detail public perceptions and normative environmental values as well as the depth of business commitment to environmental responsibility. An ideal introduction to the topic for a diverse range of scholars, the book eschews any specific theoretical framework in charting the recent evolution, current operation and future trajectory of environmentalism in New Zealand. It backs strategic advice with both social and ecological data, and raises questions over the country’s reputation for greenness at the same time as recognizing its numerous achievements. With neat summaries of key issues at the end of each chapter, expansive guidance on further reading, and a multitude of examples ideal for classroom debate, this volume gives us an informed, objective, and wide-ranging appraisal on a topic of increasing centrality in the policy debate.

Book The Cambridge Handbook of Environmental Justice and Sustainable Development

Download or read book The Cambridge Handbook of Environmental Justice and Sustainable Development written by Sumudu A. Atapattu and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 825 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the global endorsement of the Sustainable Development Goals, environmental justice struggles are growing all over the world. These struggles are not isolated injustices, but symptoms of interlocking forms of oppression that privilege the few while inflicting misery on the many and threatening ecological collapse. This handbook offers critical perspectives on the multi-dimensional, intersectional nature of environmental injustice and the cross-cutting forms of oppression that unite and divide these struggles, including gender, race, poverty, and indigeneity. The work sheds new light on the often-neglected social dimension of sustainability and its relationship to human rights and environmental justice. Using a variety of legal frameworks and case studies from around the world, this volume illustrates the importance of overcoming the fragmentation of these legal frameworks and social movements in order to develop holistic solutions that promote justice and protect the planet's ecosystems at a time of intensifying economic and ecological crisis.

Book Sustainability New Zealand s Resource Management Legislation

Download or read book Sustainability New Zealand s Resource Management Legislation written by Sir Geoffrey Palmer QC and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Commission on Environment and Development in its 1987 report provided a new analysis of the world's resource and environmental problems that linked two key ideas: economic growth and sustainability. The report did not predict increasing decay, poverty, and environmental degradation. It saw instead the possibility for a new era of economic growth, based on sustainability and environmentalism. That vision is highly attractive politically, even if the contradictions are not fully resolved in the document. Growth in the world's population is a serious problem. It cannot be sustained by the existing environmental resources. In developing the idea of sustainability the Commission asserted that all countries and all types of economies will need to form a consensus on the basic concept of sustainable development, and on a broad strategic framework for achieving it. Remaking the law of any state to conform to the idea of sustainable development is an enormous undertaking. Just what is involved and how difficult it is can be understood from examining the recent New Zealand experience. There may be some lessons in it for others, many of which will not emerge until the new legislation is up and running, but the policy formation in New Zealand was itself fascinating and is worthy of study for its own sake. This paper aims to give an explanation and overview of that legislation and its relationship to the concept of sustainability. The paper tracks the development of New Zealand resource management legislation from the National Development Bill designed to aid the 1970s Think Big projects, to the privatization of the Ministry of Works and Development and the subdividing of that Ministry's functions to the Ministry for the Environment, the project of Resource Management Law Reform, and the Resource Management Act legislation created as an outcome of that project. It discusses some of the more contentious areas of that legislation as well as its purposes and principles, including its commitment to Treaty of Waitangi principles.

This book was released on 1994-12-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines why policies and laws intended to protect the environment often do not work. In particular, Gamman addresses the fundamental reasons why efforts to protect natural resources in the developing world generally fail. He describes why environmental initiatives originating in national governments, international foreign assistance agencies, and environmental groups suffer from a dysfunctional decision making process. And he suggests how to improve environmental policymaking by creating partnerships for sustainable development, showing how to do this with a step-by-step negotiation process.

Book The Treaty on the Ground

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's 175 years since the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. At times they've been years of conflict and bitterness, but there have also been remarkable gains, and positive changes that have made New Zealand a distinct nation. This book takes stock of where we've been, where we are headed, and why it matters. Written by some of the country's leading scholars and experts in the field, it ranges from the impact of the Treaty on everything from resource management to school governance. Its focus is the application of the Treaty from the viewpoint of practitioners — the people who are walking and talking it in their jobs, communities or everyday lives — and it vividly tracks the ups and downs of bringing the spirit and principles of the Treaty to fruition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Waitangi Tribunal sits at the heart of the Treaty settlement process, with a unique remit to investigate claims and recommend settlements. But although the claims process has been hugely controversial, little has been written about the Tribunal itself. These essays, by leading academics, lawyers and researchers, successfully fill that gap, examining the Tribunal’s role in reshaping Māori identity and society, the Tribunal’s future mission, and its contribution to ideas of justice and reparation. This perceptive analysis of a key institution is vital reading for anyone seeking to understand Treaty settlements.
