Download or read book Monitoring Animal Populations and Their Habitats written by Brenda McComb and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-03-11 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the face of so many unprecedented changes in our environment, the pressure is on scientists to lead the way toward a more sustainable future. Written by a team of ecologists, Monitoring Animal Populations and Their Habitats: A Practitioner’s Guide provides a framework that natural resource managers and researchers can use to design monitoring programs that will benefit future generations by distilling the information needed to make informed decisions. In addition, this text is valuable for undergraduate- and graduate-level courses that are focused on monitoring animal populations. With the aid of more than 90 illustrations and a four-page color insert, this book offers practical guidance for the entire monitoring process, from incorporating stakeholder input and data collection, to data management, analysis, and reporting. It establishes the basis for why, what, how, where, and when monitoring should be conducted; describes how to analyze and interpret the data; explains how to budget for monitoring efforts; and discusses how to assemble reports of use in decision-making. The book takes a multi-scaled and multi-taxa approach, focusing on monitoring vertebrate populations and upland habitats, but the recommendations and suggestions presented are applicable to a variety of monitoring programs. Lastly, the book explores the future of monitoring techniques, enabling researchers to better plan for the future of wildlife populations and their habitats. Monitoring Animal Populations and Their Habitats: A Practitioner’s Guide furthers the goal of achieving a world in which biodiversity is allowed to evolve and flourish in the face of such uncertainties as climate change, invasive species proliferation, land use expansion, and population growth.
Download or read book Environmental Management Tool Kit for Obsolete Pesticides Volume 6 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Management Tool Kit Volume 6 is intended to provide practical methods to assist countries in the formulation of strategies for the management of pesticide contaminated land. As risk reduction largely depends on the accuracy of site investigation and associated risk assessment this document is meant to be used in close conjunction with EMTK Volume 5, the outputs of which are critical in the design of pesticide contaminated land environmental management plans. The previous volumes of the FAO EMTK series (Volumes 1- 4) are designed to assist countries with the risk management of obsolete pesticide stocks. From a wider perspective the approaches used to deal with obsolete stocks and contaminated land are similar. For both contaminated land and obsolete stocks the first step requires a preliminary risk assessment to prioritize sites in terms of urgency for risk management and to estimate the absolute risk. Due to the nature of contaminated land, an additional series of assessment steps (further described by EMTK5) are required to understand what is going on below ground and how this affects risk, that are not required for obsolete stocks, the risks for which can largely be understood from a single visit to each site. Where the risk management of obsolete stocks and contaminated land differ is in the number and types of disposal options and risk reduction techniques required. As risk management of contaminated land requires dealing with larger sources, usually at lower concentrations, and the escape of and exposure to contaminants in many different ways.

Download or read book Sustainability Standards and Global Governance written by Archna Negi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-02 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book focuses on the issue of sustainability standards from the perspective of both global governance frameworks and emerging economies. It stems from the recognition that the accelerated pace of economic globalization has generated production and consumption patterns that are generating sustainability concerns. Sustainability standards (and regulations) are increasingly being used in a bid to make global consumption and production more sustainable. Given the dense inter-connectedness of economic affairs globally, the use of sustainability standards has become a concern of global governance, who face the challenge of achieving a balance between the use of standards for genuine sustainability objectives, and not allowing them to turn into instruments of protectionism or coercion. The emerging economies, given their increasing engagement with the global economy, are most impacted by the use of sustainability standards. The emphasis of ‘emerging economies’ in this book is retained both by using case studies from these economies and by collating perceptions and assessments of those located in these economies. The case studies included span sectors such as palm oil, forestry, food quality, vehicular emissions and water standards, and address the problems unique to the emerging economies, including capacity building for compliance with standards, adapting international standards in domestic contexts and addressing the exclusion of small and medium enterprises etc. Complex interfaces and dynamics of a global nature are not limited to the thematic of this book but also extend to the process through which it was written. This book brings together insights from developed as well as emerging economies (Germany, India, Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia, Pakistan, Mexico and China). It also brings together scholars and practitioners to jointly ponder upon the conceptual aspects of the global frameworks for sustainability standards. This book is a very useful resource for researchers and practitioners alike, and provides valuable insights for policy makers as well.

The recommendations address DOE's five focus areas: landfill stabilization; contaminant plume containment and remediation; facility transitioning, decommissioning, and final disposition; mixed waste characterization treatment; and high-level waste in tanks. The book also addresses technologies in areas that cross cut the above focus area programs, namely characterization monitoring and sensor technologies, efficient separations and processing, robotics, and waste disposal.
