Development in the Niger Delta is vital not only to the stability and prosperity of Nigeria, but also to global energy security. This book provides unique insights into the challenges of development and peace building in the Niger Delta, and insights into other resource-rich but poverty-stricken, conflict-prone regions of the world.

Book Nature Under Siege

Download or read book Nature Under Siege written by INIODU GEORGE-UKPONG and published by Author House. This book was released on 2012-08-27 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expressions such as Environmental terrorism or eco-anarchy may sum up the state of the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, in a bid to explain the indiscriminate cutting of pristine forests, terminal scare of wildlife and extinction of biodiversity, loss of soil fertility and fecundity of rivers, acidified atmosphere, corroded roofs, disease, conflicts, militarization, extra-judicial killing, inflation and collapse of traditional economy, poverty, prostitution, rape, death.... But embedded in the clatter of this semantic analysis are the realities of an abused environment, where uncertainty looms in daylight and grief rules the night; for well over five decades that the region has come under intense ravaging by the oil industry, the effect is evident in the physical, biological and socio-economic environments. Against the background of rich but fragile ecosystems where nature experiments with its components at will; and the picture of a consciously raped ecology, this book examines the lingering environmental crises in Nigerias oil-rich region. With appropriate use of case studies based on practical field experience, and explicit discourse on remedial measures, the book is fashioned to meet the interest of all classes of persons including students of environmental management, policy makers and stakeholders in the Niger Delta environment.

Book The Unfinished Revolution in Nigeria s Niger Delta

Download or read book The Unfinished Revolution in Nigeria s Niger Delta written by Cyril Obi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-04 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1990s heralded waves of spectacular forms of local resistance and globalized protest against oil exploitation and environmental pollution in oil-producing regions of the developing world. One of the most spectacular local uprisings against global oil multinationals was led by the Ogoni people who were protesting against the exploitation and marginalization of oil-producing ethnic minority communities in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. However, the hanging on November 10, 1995 of nine Ogoni ethnic minority and environmental justice activists, including Ken Saro-Wiwa, only served to exacerbate protests in later years. Within a decade, dozens of locally rooted insurgent groups emerged in the Niger Delta and construed themselves as part of the social movement for ethnic minority rights and environmental justice which dates back to colonial times. However, the trajectory of the revolutionary momentum has changed over time, reflecting a mix of progressive, opportunistic and retrogressive trends. This book provides a critical study of the trajectory of struggles in the Niger Delta since 1995, paying attention to continuities and changes, including recent developments linked to the shift from local resistance, to the rupturing of the Presidential Amnesty peace deal (largely to the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta) and the resurgence low-intensity sporadic armed militancy—led by the Niger Delta Avengers militia among others. The contributors critically interrogate the nature of the region’s political economy, socio-economic trends and trajectories over the past two decades. This collection also accentuates the lessons learnt, prospects for self-determination, socio-economic and environmental justice and peace in the aftermath of the hanging.

Book Human Impact on Environment and Sustainable Development in Africa

Download or read book Human Impact on Environment and Sustainable Development in Africa written by Michael B.K. Darkoh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. Based on a blend of knowledge and perspectives from a variety of disciplines this volume examines the human-environment interaction in Africa, with a focus on the economic, social and political processes that generate environmental change and problems in this region. Currently there are controversies over and challenges to such concepts and issues as environment-human relationships, ecological resilience, decertification, sustainable development, globalization and North-South dialogue. This book draws upon past and present research findings to discuss these issues. It features: an examination of the characteristics, processes and patterns of environmental crises; an analysis of the principal issues and challenges facing policy makers and implementers; and the promotion of awareness of theoretical, empirical and comparative research. The volume not only seeks to answer some of the old questions, but also open up new ones for further discussion.

Book Environment and Conflict

Download or read book Environment and Conflict written by John Agbonifo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental degradation is a fast-growing problem that not only threatens to erode future development and undermine economic prosperity, but also victimizes and displaces ordinary peoples and communities in some of the most fragile areas of the world. Often grassroots opposition and mobilization is seen through a secular lens, implying that collective action is merely material and provincial. In this book John Agbonifo argues for a decolonization of the environment and to see the environment from the perspective of local communities. He examines the case of the Ogoni struggle against the Shell oil company, and asks how may we understand the struggle of the Ogoni against the state and Shell? Was the conflict merely about a minority ethnic drive at securing provincial advantages in distributional matters, or the legitimate actions of a local community aimed at preserving its environment and livelihood? Exploring the material and symbolic, provincial and nationalist dimensions of Ogoni motivation, Agbonifo's book is the first serious attempt to discuss these issues. The book will appeal to scholars and students of the Niger Delta conflicts, resource-related conflicts and social movements, in Africa and elsewhere. Those researching in the fields of development studies, political geography, civil society and collective action will also find it useful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people in the Niger Delta may not have heard of the term “environmental injustice” before, but it is just a new word for an old problem. Environmental justice is based on the principle that all people have a right to be protected from environmental pollution and to live in and enjoy a clean and healthy environment. In the Niger Delta environmental injustice is experienced mostly from the activities of the oil industries which have degraded the land, contaminated the water and polluted the air without proper compensation. Gas leakage is killing many people and continues to have a negative impact on the lives of the people living around the area. The aim of this book is to raise awareness of the issues affecting the Niger Delta region, and to encourage involvement in the cause.

Book Oil Related Environmental Degradation and Human Displacement

Download or read book Oil Related Environmental Degradation and Human Displacement written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oil wealth enriches Nigeria, but it has not improved the lives of the majority of the masses living in the oil-bearing areas of the Niger Delta. Niger Delta region has been exposed to environmental risks that have caused many to lose their means of livelihood, triggering high level of poverty in the region. This study examines the impact of oil-related environmental problems and how it has induced human displacement in the Niger Delta. Furthermore, it examined the efficacy of the Nigerian environmental policies as it related to the oil-bearing areas. The research found that oil activities have caused more harm than good in the Niger Delta. At present, the oil-bearing areas remain marginalized from the mainstream economic, social, and political activities in Nigeria. The Nigerian government's top-down approach to the development of the oil-bearing areas has not been people-centered and participatory. The paper also made some viable recommendations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Niger Delta region of Nigeria has, since the 1970s, been engulfed by oil-related conflicts that have passed through different phases. The transformation of the conflict from one phase to another, despite development interventions by the Nigerian government, has elicited the concern of scholars and researchers who have engaged in an exciting debate on the challenges and opportunities for development in the region. The focus on development in conflict resolution is informed by the centrality of development to the conflict in the region. Thus, Niger Delta: Constraints and Pathways to Development explores the complex constraints and pathways to development in the region. Divided into eight chapters, and writing from the perspectives of the environment and sustainable development, good governance, public expenditure, public policy and participatory community development, the book attempts to explain and bring to the fore, the challenges to and options for development.

Book excerpt: Oil has played a strategic role in the economics and politics of Nigeria since the mid-60s. Inspite the large oil earnings, the oil producing Niger Delta region in Nigeria remains one of the poorest and most conflict-prone region in sub-Saharan Africa. For most of the Niger Deltans, the story of oil has practically been that of 'the bad and the ugly'. The legacy of oil has been severe economic and environmental problems which have exacerbated political tensions and social conflict in the country. This dismal natural resource endowment narrative raises a key question, why has sustainable development been elusive in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria despite the magnitude of its oil wealth? This question is the subject of extensive discussion in this factual book. Despite the fact that the type and scale of violence in the oil region is rooted in generalised poverty, exploitation and a discriminatory system, what happens when a revolution gets hijacked by people pursuing parochial agenda?
