Book Environmental Impact Research Program Brush Piles Section 5 3 1 US Army Corps of Engineers Wildlife Resources Management Manual

Download or read book Environmental Impact Research Program Brush Piles Section 5 3 1 US Army Corps of Engineers Wildlife Resources Management Manual written by Chester O. Martin and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A management techniques report on brush piles is provided as Section 5.3.1 of the US Army Corps of Engineers Wildlife Resources Management Manual. The report was prepared as a guide to assist Corps biologists and resource managers in developing habitat management programs for project lands. Topics covered for brush structures include wildlife value, cautions and limitations. The provision of adequate resting and escape cover is critical to proper management of ground-nesting birds, rabbits, and other small game. Although living brush is preferred in most situations, artificial structures can be built to provide immediate shelter where natural cover is limited. Guidelines are presented for the design, construction, maintenance, and proper placement of brush piles for a variety of wildlife species. Management for the northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) and cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus spp.) is emphasized. Brush piles are recommended for use in conjunction with other habitat management practices designed to improve food, cover, and water.

Autumn olive is tolerant of a wide range of soils and climatic conditions. Plants grow best on well-drained soils that are deep, sandy, loamy, or moderately fine-textured. Establishment of autumn olive is often recommended for borders, hedgerows, windbreaks, and disturbed sites. Planting stock of autumn olive is readily available, and some commercial nurseries produce propagules in quantity. Four cultivars (Cardinal, Ellagood, Elsberry, and Redwing) have been developed and are adapted to geographically specific regions. This report provides information on management objectives, site selection and preparation, propagule selection, planting methods, and maintenance requirements for autumn olive throughout its area of potential use. Management cautions and limitations are discussed, and guidelines are provided on the appropriate use of autumn olive in wildlife and habitat management programs. Book excerpt: A plant materials report on Maximilian sunflower (Helianthus maximiliani) is provided as Section 7.4.3 of the US Army Corps of Engineers Wildlife Resources Management Manual. The report was prepared as a guide to assist the project biologist/natural resources manager with the selection, establishment, an management of appropriate plant materials for wildlife and habitat development programs. Major topics covered are description, distribution, habitat requirements, wildlife value, establishment, maintenance, and cautions and limitations. Maximilian sunflower is a perennial forb native to the tall- and mixed-grass prairie region of the central United States and south- central Canada. The sunflower is known to provide food and cover for a variety of wildlife species, especially nongame birds. The species is also used for soil stabilization an site reclamation, and the showy yellow flowers make it popular for landscaping. Two cultivars are presently available for use in conservation plantings. The species grows best on medium sandy to clayey loams on sites that receive more than 14 in. (36 cm) of annual precipitation. Plants are tolerant of fire and moderately tolerant of drought and shade, but are unable to withstand saline soils and heavy grazing. Established plants are highly competitive unless management practices are employed to reduce their vigor. This report provides specifications for site selection and preparation, propagule selection, planting, and maintenance of Maximilian sunflower to improve wildlife habitat conditions within its region of greatest management use.
