Wasser and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A plant materials report on alkali sacaton (Sporobolus airoides) is provided as Section 7.1.4 of the US Army Corps of Engineers Wildlife Resources Management Manual. The report was prepared as a guide to assist the Corps District or project biologist with the selection, cultivation, and management of suitable plant materials for development of wildlife habitat. Topics covered include description, distribution, habitat requirement, wildlife value, establishment, maintenance, and cautions and limitations. Alkali sacaton is a large, warm-season bunchgrass native to the western United States. The species is most beneficial to wildlife in the restoration of habitat on disturbed sites. Distinguishing characteristics of alkali sacaton are given, and the species distribution and region of maximum abundance are shown. Habitat requirements are discussed, and soil and moisture tolerances are specified. Benefits of the seed amd foliage to wildlife are discussed. Specifications for establishment, including site selection, site preparation, propagule selection, and planting methods, are given. Species recommended for planting with sacaton are listed for several habitat types. Maintenance requirements and tolerances to fertilization, irrigation, mechanical treatment, grazing, burning, and competition are described. (Author).

Wasser and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A plant materials report on antelope bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata) is provided as Section 7.5.1 of the US Army Corps of Engineers Wildlife Resources Management Manual, The report was prepared as a guide to assist the Corps District or project biologist with the selection, cultivation, and management of suitable plant materials for wildlife and habitat development programs. Topics covered for bitterbrush include description, distribution, habitat requirements, wildlife value, establishment, maintenance, and cautions and limitations. Antelope bitterbrush is a semievergreen native shrub that occurs predominantly on well drained hillsides and slopes in the West. It is considered one of the most important western browse species for big game, especially mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), and plants are also used for food and cover by a variety of other game and nongame wildlife. Diagnostic characteristics of bitterbrush are described, and ecotypic variation is discussed. Habitat requirements, including soil and moisture preferences, are described. Food and cover value is discussed for several big game animals, and wildlife species known to use bitterbrush are listed. Guidelines are provided for site selection, site preparation, propagule selection and treatment, planting methods, and maintenance of bitterbrush stands. Tolerances to competition, burning, browsing pressure, and insect damage are discussed (Author).

Book Environmental Impact Research Program and Defense Natural Resources Program Maximilian Sunflower Helianthus Maximiliani Section 7 4 3 US Army Corps of Engineers Wildlife Resources Management Manual

Download or read book Environmental Impact Research Program and Defense Natural Resources Program Maximilian Sunflower Helianthus Maximiliani Section 7 4 3 US Army Corps of Engineers Wildlife Resources Management Manual written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A plant materials report on Maximilian sunflower (Helianthus maximiliani) is provided as Section 7.4.3 of the US Army Corps of Engineers Wildlife Resources Management Manual. The report was prepared as a guide to assist the project biologist/natural resources manager with the selection, establishment, an management of appropriate plant materials for wildlife and habitat development programs. Major topics covered are description, distribution, habitat requirements, wildlife value, establishment, maintenance, and cautions and limitations. Maximilian sunflower is a perennial forb native to the tall- and mixed-grass prairie region of the central United States and south- central Canada. The sunflower is known to provide food and cover for a variety of wildlife species, especially nongame birds. The species is also used for soil stabilization an site reclamation, and the showy yellow flowers make it popular for landscaping. Two cultivars are presently available for use in conservation plantings. The species grows best on medium sandy to clayey loams on sites that receive more than 14 in. (36 cm) of annual precipitation. Plants are tolerant of fire and moderately tolerant of drought and shade, but are unable to withstand saline soils and heavy grazing. Established plants are highly competitive unless management practices are employed to reduce their vigor. This report provides specifications for site selection and preparation, propagule selection, planting, and maintenance of Maximilian sunflower to improve wildlife habitat conditions within its region of greatest management use. This book was released on 1992 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A plant materials report on autumn olive (Elaeagnus umbellata) is provided as Section 7.5.7 of the US Army Corps of Engineers Wildlife Resources management Manual. The report was prepared as a guide to assist project/installation natural resources personnel with the selection, establishment, and management of appropriate plant materials for wildlife and habitat development programs. Major topics covered are description, distribution, habitat requirements, wildlife and land management value, establishment, maintenance, and cautions and limitations. Autumn olive is a hardy shrub or small tree introduced into the United States from Asia. It is widely used in the East in habitat improvement projects designed to attract wildlife, provide barriers, beautify existing landscapes, and reclaim disturbed sites. Autumn olive is tolerant of a wide range of soils and climatic conditions. Plants grow best on well-drained soils that are deep, sandy, loamy, or moderately fine-textured. Establishment of autumn olive is often recommended for borders, hedgerows, windbreaks, and disturbed sites. Planting stock of autumn olive is readily available, and some commercial nurseries produce propagules in quantity. Four cultivars (Cardinal, Ellagood, Elsberry, and Redwing) have been developed and are adapted to geographically specific regions. This report provides information on management objectives, site selection and preparation, propagule selection, planting methods, and maintenance requirements for autumn olive throughout its area of potential use. Management cautions and limitations are discussed, and guidelines are provided on the appropriate use of autumn olive in wildlife and habitat management programs.
