Book Environmental and Water Quality Operational Studies Environmental Guidelines for Dike Fields

Download or read book Environmental and Water Quality Operational Studies Environmental Guidelines for Dike Fields written by C. W. Burch and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These environmental guidelines for dike fields consist of environmental objectives, design procedures, and river-specific examples of currently employed environmental features that can be used to maintain or increase fish and wildlife habitat diversity. Design, construction, and maintenance of dikes can alter the water depth, current velocity, and substrate composition to increase habitat diversity of US Army Corps of Engineers waterway projects. Features that can be incorporated into dike fields to increase diversity are notches, low-elevation dikes, rootless dikes, and minimum maintenance practices. Other potential techniques include dredging to remove sediment, disposing of dredged material within the dike field, relocating old notches, placing additional rock, adding artificial reefs, and building control structures in side channel closure dikes. Two case studies--one on the Missouri River, one on the lower Mississippi River--of river response of dike field construction are presented. Aquatic habitat requirements of representative vertebrate species and of aquatic invertebrates in general are given in appendixes.

Book The Ganga River Basin A Hydrometeorological Approach

Download or read book The Ganga River Basin A Hydrometeorological Approach written by Manvendra Singh Chauhan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-04 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an overview of the hydrometeorological and hydrological studies and assists in tackling challenges posed by climate and land use land cover changes. The Ganga River is one of the major living streams on the planet earth and very important river system in India. This holy river is a lifeline for approximately five hundred million people. In the last few decades, River Ganges has been subjected to tremendous pressures with respect to both water quantity and water quality. This situation, already one of the alarming magnitudes, has been further provoked by hydrometeorological changes resulting in droughts, floods and reduced groundwater levels and river flows in addition to the poor river health. Thus, it is imperative to assess the various complexities and possible solutions for better management of River Ganges. This book is a valuable addition to the literature and contributes to research on River Ganges which will help better planning and management of Ganga river basin. The hydrological and hydrometeorological aspects covered in this book help practitioners, researchers, policymakers and other stakeholders.

Book Environmental Effects of Dikes and Revetments on Large Riverine Systems

Download or read book Environmental Effects of Dikes and Revetments on Large Riverine Systems written by Mark B. Sandheinrich and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of pertinent research, suggests that dikes and revetments have short-term and long-term effects on major riverine ecosystems. Short-term effects may be beneficial and include increases in aquatic habitat diversity physical stability which, in turn, results in high densities and diversities of fish and macroinvertebrates within the main stem of the river. Dike fields are intermediate physically, chemically, and biologically to the main channel and backwaters of rivers. Dike fields often support the most diverse fish and macroinvertebrate community of any habitat within the river. But community composition is less stable than backwaters and is dependent upon river stage and water velocity. Moderate and slow-water areas within dike fields provide important spawning and nursery areas for many lotic species of fish within the modified river. Revetments of broken rock stabilize banks and provide additional hard substrate for colonization by dense populations of invertebrates. Interstitial spaces between rocks may provide areas of moderate flow for juvenile and forage fish. Long-term effects of river training structures may be detrimental to the biotic integrity of the river.
