Studying petroliferous basins in China, we discovered that there are often as many as three different sources of the microfossils: the source rocks, the rocks along the pathway, and the reservoir rocks. Therefore, fossil spores, pollen and algae from inland and coastal shelf petroliferous basins are analyzed and illustrated to show this complex process. Furthermore, the organic origin theory of oil is proven and environmental characteristics for hydrocarbon source-rock formation are discussed. Along with the geochronical and geographic distribution of non-marine petroleum source rocks in China, the mechanisms of petroleum migration following the pathways to the reservoirs are investigated. It will be a valuable reference work as well as a textbook for a wider research areas ranging from stratigraphy, palynology, palaeontology and petroleum geology.

Nearly a decade ago, the first in this series of geobotany conferences was organized on this campus by Dr. Jane Forsyth of the Department of Geology. After considerable growth, culminating in an International Geobotany Conference at the University of Tennessee in 1973, it was decided to again organize a regional geobotany meeting. The melange of papers in this volume are products of that meeting. Geobotany, by definition, is an interdiscip1inarian approach to interpretational problems involving such investigators as geologists and botanists, archaeologists and stratigraphers, ecologists and pa1yno1ogists. Interaction among these individuals is necessary for the satisfactory solution of a problem. Each can provide invaluable assistance to the other. The purpose of the meeting in Bowling Green was to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and information. Sponsors of the conference include the Department of Biological Sciences, the Department of Geology, the Environmental Studies Center, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Graduate School. All of the sponsors are academic or administrative units of Bowling Green State University and each played an important role in the success of the conference.

These have been studied and reported upon as fully as the condition of the problem permitted, so that the determinations could be immediately available to geologists, but with the reservation that none Of the ques tions could be fully settled until all known material had been studied and properly correlated. The rich fossil plant deposits in the John Day Basin, as set forth more fully in the historical account which follows, have been known for a period Of nearly fifty years, but their study has been carried On in a more or less desultory manner. There has also been considerable confusion as to the horizons whence these plants came. As various Species of plants described originally from the John Day region were detected in various other localities in Oregon, and in surrounding areas, as central Washington, western Idaho, and northern California, it became more than ever apparent that a thorough study of all material obtainable from this type area would be necessary before any definite or satisfactory conclusions could be reached. The immediate incentive for this revision was furnished by the receipt of a considerable collection of plants, made by Dr. John C. Merriam in 1900 while he was in charge of an expedition into this region made under the auspices Of the University of California. Book excerpt: The geological evolution of Central Asia commenced with the formation of a complex Precambrian–Palaeozoic orogen. Cimmerian blocks were then accreted to the southern margin in the Mesozoic, leading to tectonic reactivation of older structures and discrete episodes of basin formation. The Indian and Arabian blocks collided with Asia in the Cenozoic, leading to renewed structural reactivation, intracontinental deformation and basin development. This complex evolution resulted in the present-day setting of an elongated Tien Shan range flanked by large Mesozoic–Cenozoic sedimentary basins with smaller intramontane basins distributed within the range. This volume presents multidisciplinary results and reviews from research groups in Europe and Central Asia that focus on the western part of the Tien Shan and some of the adjacent large sedimentary basins. These works elucidate the Late Palaeozoic–Cenozoic tectono-sedimentary evolution of the area. Emphasis is given to the collision of terranes and continents and the ensuing fault reactivations. The impact of climatic changes on sedimentation is also examined.
