Book Offshore Oil and Gas Environmental Effects Monitoring

Download or read book Offshore Oil and Gas Environmental Effects Monitoring written by Shelley L. Armsworthy and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offshore oil and gas drilling operations take place in some of the world's most biologically productive oceanic waters. An ongoing concern related to the development of this industry is that exposure to contaminants from waste discharges may cause ill effects on organisms and their habitat. Environmental Effects Monitoring (EEM) programs are undertaken to verify environmental impact assessment predictions, to detect any unforeseen effects, and to help identify cause-effect relationships. EEM has been carried out worldwide for many offshore developments, and much has been learned about the fate of drilling and production contaminants and their biological effects. EEM programs have rapidly evolved in response to new knowledge on the transport, fate, and effects of potential contaminants; changes in regulatory requirements; and improved impact assessment technologies and statistical approaches for data interpretation. In May 2003, an international group of scientists, environmental managers, and industry representatives shared their expertise and new knowledge at the Offshore Oil and Gas Environmental Effects Monitoring Workshop. The participants reviewed the status of current offshore oil and gas EEM programs and identified future research needs to advance our understanding of the impacts of the offshore oil and gas industry. This book represents a selected number of peer-reviewed papers from workshop participants, covering a range of topics including regional experience from past and ongoing EEM programs; environmental management issues such as risk assessment and decision-making processes; the development of predictive risk assessment models; and new approaches and technologies formonitoring potential alterations in benthic, pelagic, and tropospheric ecosystem components. This book will be of use to scientists, environmental managers, regulators, and industry representatives, as well as members of the general public wishing to improve their understanding on the application of offshore oil and gas EEM programs for the protection of our ocean environment and its resources.

Book Pulp and Paper Environmental Effects Monitoring Technical Guidance Document

Download or read book Pulp and Paper Environmental Effects Monitoring Technical Guidance Document written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Canada, pulp & paper mills in Canada are required to conduct environmental effects monitoring (EEM) under the federal Fisheries Act in order to determine any environmental concerns related to fish, fish habitat, or utilization of the fisheries resource. At some mill sites, fish & benthic invertebrate community monitoring studies may not be appropriate due to such factors as hazardous conditions or the presence of confounding substances. This chapter provides details on two alternative monitoring methods: the use of artificial stream systems or mesocosms, and the use of caged bivalves. Topics covered include the applicability of these methods within EEM programs, the characteristics of the technology involved, site selection, species selection, data assessment & interpretation, variables to be measured, and reporting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living communities are continuously changing, both as a result of natural processes and of human activities. It is essential for us to have effective biological and ecological monitoring programs in order to detect these changes and understand the factors that influence them. In the first part of the book, the roles of local, national, and international organizations that implement monitoring programs are discussed and assessed. In the second section of the book, a wide range of examples are used to explain and evaluate methods of data collection, analysis, and interpretation. The final section focuses on the important applications of biological monitoring, such as pollution control, land-use management, monitoring rare species, and post-environmental impact assessment.

Book Technical Report on Pulp and Paper Environmental Effects Monitoring EEM Program

Download or read book Technical Report on Pulp and Paper Environmental Effects Monitoring EEM Program written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amendments to the Fisheries Act included a provision for environmental effects monitoring at pulp & paper mills in Canada in order to determine if there were environmental concerns related to fish, fish habitat, or utilization of the fisheries resource. Reports from the first cycle of monitoring were submitted in 1996. This report reviews the results of the benthic invertebrate community survey component of the first cycle of this environmental monitoring program, in which 134 mills were sampled to examine the benthic invertebrate communities downstream. It discusses problematic issues revealed in this cycle, including factors that confound the interpretation of data collected, and the adequacy of statistical analysis of the data. Recommendations are made for the next cycle of monitoring with regard to research needs. A decision tree developed to assist in designing cycle 2 studies is provided.
