This book was released on 2014-05-13 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the age of global communication where it is possible to become abreast with environmental or socio-political trends from different countries across the world, Sweden and Germany are known as global leaders in different fields. Especially their role in the educational systems is discussed a lot. EU-countries pay much attention to the Swedish way commonly known as “Swedish Model”1 and the German way is in general known with high quality standards in education. The Stockholm Conference in 1972 and in particular the Rio Conference in 1992 was the start that Sweden has environmentally led the world. Sweden is one of the pioneering countries in education for all including immigrants. Germany is known for good qualification in the education. EE plays in both educational system – in Sweden and Germany – an important role which is discussed in the present paper.

Book Environmental Education in the 21st Century

Download or read book Environmental Education in the 21st Century written by Joy Palmer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental education is a field characterised by a paradox. Few would doubt the urgency and importance of learning to live in sustainable ways, but environmental education holds nowhere near the priority position in formal schooling around the world that this would suggest. This text sets out to find out why this is so. It is divided into six parts: Part 1 is a concise history of the development of environmental education from an international perspective; Part 2 is an overview of the 'global agenda', or subject knowledge of environmental education; Part 3 introduces perspectives on theory and research in environmental education; Part 4 moves on to practice, and presents an integrated model for planning environmental education programmes; Part 5 brings together invited contributors who talk about environmental education in their own countries - from 15 countries including China, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the USA; Part 6 returns to the core questions of how progress can be made, and how we can maximise the potential of environmental education for the twenty first century.

Book Education for Environmental Sustainability

Download or read book Education for Environmental Sustainability written by Iselin Mulvik and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the recent years, there has been a growing consensus in Europe and beyond on the role that education can play in the transition towards a green economy and society needed to address the severe decline in biodiversity, environmental degradation and risks posed by climate change. Education has an essential role to play by supporting citizens in developing the competences needed to live responsibly, change consumption models, design solution, transform society and shape a green economy. In the context of the EU's efforts to promote a sustainable and green Europe, the purpose of this study is to map EU Member States' national and institutional practices, processes, tools and strategies in education for environmental sustainability (EES) at various levels and in different forms of education. To date, no such comprehensive comparative analysis has yet been carried out on the delivery of education for environmental sustainability in the EU. The study will help inform the actions of the European Commission with regard to education for environmental sustainability and policy for the implementation of the European Education Area and the European Green Deal. This study understands education for environmental sustainability as education that makes students aware of, sensitive to, and knowledgeable about the environment and its interconnectedness to social and economic systems, while encouraging them to develop attitudes of concern and motivation, as well as practical, complex systems and critical thinking skills to identify and solve environmental problems.

Book Environmental Learning for the 21st Century

Download or read book Environmental Learning for the 21st Century written by Centre for Educational Research and Innovation and published by OECD. This book was released on 1995 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raising the environmental awareness of the population is a central element for developing a sustainable environment. This report is intended to highlight how schools, teachers, and students in Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries are attempting to meet the challenge of building a sustainable society through environmental education. The main pedagogical and research issues discussed in this report reflect intense work that was carried out in the participating countries at the grass-roots or school level. Chapter I addresses the challenges of international environmental education. Chapter II deals with the pedagogical, curricular, and teacher development questions that resulted from an analysis of national reports. Chapter III concentrates on action-research as it was implemented in the countries that used it as a tool in developing school initiatives. Policy issues are addressed in Chapter IV from an analysis of the outcomes of the five in-depth studies on environmental education policy that were carried out in Australia, Austria, Finland, Germany, and Norway. Chapter V concludes with some basic dilemmas concerning present developments in environmental education and makes recommendations for the future. Contains 57 references. (JRH)

Book Environmental Education for Teacher Training in the European Union

Download or read book Environmental Education for Teacher Training in the European Union written by Kathryn O'Loan and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research project seeks to review a secondary level (compulsory, post-primary) in-service teacher training project for environmental education funded by Directorate General Eleven (DGXI) of the European Commission (EC). Two aspects of the project, called the Euro-Awareness Project, are evaluated. These are the pan-European network, called the Euro-Awareness Network, established to facilitate the project and the development of an in-service teacher training module, called Module on the Environment, Sustainability and Awareness Geared to European Schools (MESAGES). In order to do so, this research project examines the nature of criteria determined by DGXI for the submission of project proposals and key features of education and teacher training systems throughout the European Union (EU). This research project seeks to answer two questions. Firstly, did the Euro-Awareness Project develop a replicable model of in-service teacher training for environmental education in the EU? Secondly, what is the likely contribution of the Euro-Awareness Project to the objectives of the EC Environment Strategy under which it was funded? The conclusions of this research project are that the Euro-Awareness Project provided a useful insight to environmental education but did not produce a teacher training module that will have a significant impact upon secondary school practice throughout the EU. This research project further concludes that in order for future projects to be able to do so, issues relating to DGXI funding criteria need to be addressed.

Book Coloring a Green Generation

Download or read book Coloring a Green Generation written by Whitney Stohr and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The term "environmental education" refers to the practice of educating the general population- either by formal or non-formal academic methodology- about the nature of the environment, environmental degradation, and the impact of various human behaviors on the environment. Environmental education responds to a growing public awareness of the rapidly deteriorating state of the environment and the belief that an informed public will make informed lifestyle decisions giving due consideration to the environmental impact of their behavior. The international community has long recognized the economic and social value of environmental education. Various instruments of international law encourage States to develop national environmental education policies and integrate formal and non-formal programs into existing public education schemes. While the policy recommendations of the international community with regard to environmental education have been adopted by States with varying levels of success, four countries in particular - Australia, Brazil, India and the Netherlands - provide outstanding examples of superior policy development in this field. The United States unfortunately lacks the same degree of progressive policy development concerning the institutionalization of environmental education within the framework of public education. In the absence of a superseding national policy, state officials remain responsible for the development of environmental education in state public schools. As a result, the level of environmental education received by American students is inconsistent and wholly dependent upon the state of residence. Failure to receive a basic level of environmental education leaves many American students unprepared for the globalized and "green" economy of the future. This article analyzes the environmental education policies adopted by foreign jurisdictions as well as recent policy developments in California and Maryland, and builds upon the lessons learned from previous models to propose a framework for policy development of a national environmental education mandate in the United States"--Leaves iv-v.

Book Europe and Global Climate Change

Download or read book Europe and Global Climate Change written by Paul G. Harris and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is likely to become the definitive study on European global climate change politics. Its focus on the formulation, ratification, and implementation of the Kyoto Protocol within Europe make it essential reading for all who wish to understand how domestic foreign policy influenced the European Union s decision to ratify the Kyoto Protocol despite the United States decision to abandon the agreement. The book provides important historical background, case studies of the most influential European countries to shape the Kyoto Protocol, and an assessment of what enlargement means for the implementation of the agreement. It also examines how Europe s policies have shaped and been shaped by participation in the Kyoto negotiation and implementation processes. It will be an important item for the libraries of any institution or scholar with an interest in the role of Europe in addressing climate change. Miranda Schreurs, University of Maryland, US The core objective of this book is to better understand the role of foreign policy the crossovers and interactions between domestic and international politics and policies in efforts to preserve the environment and natural resources. Underlying this objective is the belief that it is not enough to analyze domestic or international political actors, institutions and processes by themselves. We need to understand the interactions among them, something that explicit thought about foreign policy can help us do. The eclectic group of contributors explore European and EU responses to global climate change, and provide insights into issues on environmental protection, sustainable development, international affairs and foreign policy.

Book The European Green Deal in Education

Download or read book The European Green Deal in Education written by Alessandro Caforio and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2024-11-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shares real-life case studies taken from GreenSCENT, a three-year EU-funded project that promotes sustainability through the development of digital platforms and tools, green education programme, and climate and environmental literacy certification. To date there has been little work published on the application of the European Green Deal in educational programmes and, while environmental education is very dynamic at present, this area has received scant attention. Seeking to remedy this critical omission, this book represents the first application of the Green Deal topics in the classroom. It examines environmental education from an academic perspective, looking specifically at the development of digital tools used to promote sustainability and provides recommendations for their practical application. The authors also discuss ways to engage larger and more diverse audiences (children, young people and adults across socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds) on the topic of sustainability through such activities as air quality monitoring, climathons and youth assemblies. Highlighting factors including inclusivity, accessible design and responsible research and innovation, this volume will be of great interest to students and scholars of European environmental policy and environmental education.
