This book was released on 1962 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Determination of thermal and atmospheric control requirements necessitate examination of realistic manned vehicles. Three versions of a manned, orbital, reentry, base-point vehicle are developed for the purpose of providing tangible reference points for determination of the thermal and atmospheric control requirements of realistic vehicles. Preliminary concepts of a manned orbital base and a manned lunar vehicle are also outlined. More complete development of the latter two concepts is planned for a later phase of the study. In addition to the development of specific vehicles, general data have been compiled on the more important aspects of manned space vehicle design, (i.e., flight vehicle power, structures, effects of meteoroids, mission equipment, and examination of these general data for environmental requirements).

Book Environmental Control Systems Selection for Manned Space Vehicles

Download or read book Environmental Control Systems Selection for Manned Space Vehicles written by North American Aviation and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is one of seven reports summarizing the first phase of work on a study of thermal and atmospheric control systems for manned and unmanned space vehicles. In this report, realistic requirements for these systems are developed based on actual preliminary designs of a series of manned orbital space vehicles having mission durations from 36 hours to 6 weeks. In addition to variations in mission duration, the vehicles cover a range of crew size, equipment heat load, reentry weight, and reentry wing loading. The report is divided into two volumes, with Volume II (Secret) containing the detailed mission and roles data for the vehicles. Based upon these vehicles, a series of active and semipassive thermal and atmospheric control systems are developed and analyzed. Integration of these systems with associated systems such as life support and secondary power is discussed. A promising systems using hydrogen fuel as a heat sink has been analyzed in detail, and the results are presented. Methods of systems analysis have received considerable attention, and a preliminary version of a long-range procedure for system performance analysis and optimization is presented. In support of this method, mathematical characterizations of some typical system components have been developed and are included.

Book Space Vehicle Environmental Control Requirements Based on Equipment and Physiological Criteria

Download or read book Space Vehicle Environmental Control Requirements Based on Equipment and Physiological Criteria written by R. K. Breeze and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study has been conducted to accumulate equipment and physiological data for use in establishing a body of engineering design requirements for space vehicle thermal and atmospheric control systems. The portion of the present version of the report covering equipment requirements is necessarily brief because of the prior effort required to define the vehicle environment. However, the report briefly summarizes some of the cooling requirements, cooling methods, and design standards in general use for electronic and electrical equipment. A brief discussion of the future equipment study efforts during the follow-on phase for providing detailed engineering requirements is presented. In the latter portion of the report, man's basic needs related to his respiratory and thermal environment are presented. Physiological information has been accumulated and organized in a form readily usable by the systems engineer for establishing requirements for thermal and atmospheric control systems. Methods for computing man's oxygen requirement and carbon dioxide output based on nutritional requirements, are shown and discussed. Equations for computing human heat losses and cabin decompression rates are shown, and their use in establishing thermal and atmospheric control systems is demonstrated by a hypothetical problem. Recommendations are made for additional study efforts to develop a simple mathematical model of a man as a basis for the development of optimum cabin atmospheric composition, optimum thermal conditions, and sustenance support. Studies concerning the influence of combined stresses and emergency procedures on special environmental requirements are needed.

Book Selected Papers on Environmental and Attitude Control of Manned Spacecraft

Download or read book Selected Papers on Environmental and Attitude Control of Manned Spacecraft written by and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disturbance and control aspects of the Apollo extension systems (AES) concept are discussed and studies made at the Langley Research Center of the external and internal disturbances for an earth-orbital mission are outlined. Typical results are presented to illustrate the disturbance profiles and vehicle response for the zero-gravity mode of operation. Experimental programs for possible 90-day and 45-day AES missions are described in terms of requirements and experimental program durations. The fuel consumption required to compensate for the disturbances and to provide control for the experiments is also given. The disturbance envelope and the experimental program requirements are used to develop an optimum control system. Weight trade-offs of three competitive systems led to the choice of a control-moment gyro-jet system combination as the optimum minimum-weight system for the extended Apollo mission. Example experimental tasks were simulated to determine the effectiveness of this control system.

Book Spacecraft Attitude Determination and Control

Download or read book Spacecraft Attitude Determination and Control written by J.R. Wertz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 877 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roger D. Werking Head, Attitude Determination and Control Section National Aeronautics and Space Administration/ Goddard Space Flight Center Extensiye work has been done for many years in the areas of attitude determination, attitude prediction, and attitude control. During this time, it has been difficult to obtain reference material that provided a comprehensive overview of attitude support activities. This lack of reference material has made it difficult for those not intimately involved in attitude functions to become acquainted with the ideas and activities which are essential to understanding the various aspects of spacecraft attitude support. As a result, I felt the need for a document which could be used by a variety of persons to obtain an understanding of the work which has been done in support of spacecraft attitude objectives. It is believed that this book, prepared by the Computer Sciences Corporation under the able direction of Dr. James Wertz, provides this type of reference. This book can serve as a reference for individuals involved in mission planning, attitude determination, and attitude dynamics; an introductory textbook for stu dents and professionals starting in this field; an information source for experimen ters or others involved in spacecraft-related work who need information on spacecraft orientation and how it is determined, but who have neither the time nor the resources to pursue the varied literature on this subject; and a tool for encouraging those who could expand this discipline to do so, because much remains to be done to satisfy future needs.

Book Integration and Optimization of Space Vehicle Environmental Control Systems

Download or read book Integration and Optimization of Space Vehicle Environmental Control Systems written by R. A. Paselk and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing optimum systems for any aerospace vehicle confronts all system engineers. Better methods for arriving at system selection rapidly and economically with a greater confidence of operational suitability are greatly needed. As such, problems associated with the synthesis of optimal environmental control systems were explored and preliminary methods were developed and applied to an atmospheric control circuit. Supporting analytical studies were made of heat and mass trasnfer and chemical processes as a basis for development of synthesis and optimization technology. Emphasis was placed on improving systems design and selection capability during vehical preliminary design, system and subsystem design. Process description and transformation to "characteristics" which show direct influence of requirements, vehical data, system variables, process selection and reliability were invwestigated for some atmospheric control circuits. Further investigations are currently being pursued to continue the systhesis of optimal environmental control systems for aerospace vehicles started in this study.
