This book was released on 1996 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes field and analytical methods, and presents results, from a reach-specific study of 200 kilometres of the Athabasca River between Hinton and Whitecourt. This section of the river receives municipal effluent from Hinton in addition to pulp mill effluent. Results are presented for water, suspended sediment, and bottom sediment samples collected in 1992. Contaminants studied include dioxins, furans, chlorinated phenolics, resin acids, organochlorine pesticides, and metals. The data presented will be incorporated into a synthesis report addressing the distribution of contaminants within northern Alberta rivers.

Book Environmental Contaminants in Bottom Sediments Peace and Athabasca River Basins October 1994 and May 1995

Download or read book Environmental Contaminants in Bottom Sediments Peace and Athabasca River Basins October 1994 and May 1995 written by Robert W. Crosley and published by The Study. This book was released on 1996 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents the analytical results and spatial trends for the following contaminants in bottom sediment samples collected from northern Alberta rivers in 1994-95: polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans, resin acids, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated phenolics, polychlorinated biphenyls, extractable organic halides, toxaphene, and mercury. Sampling locations were chosen to provide broad coverage of both the Athabasca and Peace river basins, coverage of key mixing zones downstream from four pulp mills, and replication with locations sampled previously. The 1994-95 survey objectives included: determination of within-site variability in bottom sediment contamination; testing of the assumption that the sand fraction is not an important repository of contaminants; and providing a data set for comparison with earlier bottom sediment collections in 1988-89 and 1992.

Book A Database of Environmental Samples Collected and Analysed for the Northern River Basins Study

Download or read book A Database of Environmental Samples Collected and Analysed for the Northern River Basins Study written by Robert B. More and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important component of the Northern River Basins Study was the original data resulting from the collection and analysis of environmental samples. Samples were collected, stored, and analysed by a number of different agencies, and an inventory of samples obtained by the Study and results data were compiled into a single electronic database to ensure future ease of access to the original data. This report describes the data contained in the database, the methods used to compile the database, the media and the nature of the samples, the collection site, and the data collected. Information is provided on which analyses were conducted on samples as well as the values of various parameters measured for the samples. All the files and the data fields that comprise the database are described in the users' guide in the report appendix.

The analyses incorporate results from examination of kidney, liver, intestine, and gill tissues of burbot, longnose sucker, northern pike, and flathead chub. Results are organised into reference (upstream locations and tributaries receiving no inputs from pulp mills), near-field (within 100 kilometres downstream from a pulp mill), and far-field (over 100 kilometres downstream).

Book Assessing Pulp Mill Contamination Using Morphological Deformities in Chironomid Larvae Diptera Chironomidae Upper Athabasca River April 1992

Download or read book Assessing Pulp Mill Contamination Using Morphological Deformities in Chironomid Larvae Diptera Chironomidae Upper Athabasca River April 1992 written by William Frank Warwick and published by The Study. This book was released on 1996 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chironomid (midge) larvae are considered good environmental indicators and have been used in prior research to test the sub-lethal responses of aquatic invertebrates to nutrient-rich wastes and pollution in aquatic ecosystems. This report describes a project conducted to provide baseline information on the occurrence and spatial distribution of chironomid deformities in depositional areas of the upper Athabasca River. Data were supplemented by identification and counts of individual chironomid taxa, allowing an evaluation of spatial trends in the incidence of deformities relative to known point-source effluents. The influence of effluents on chironomid community diversity is also noted. Possible explanations for the observed trends are given.

Book Contaminant Fate Modelling for the Athabasca River

Download or read book Contaminant Fate Modelling for the Athabasca River written by Golder Associates and published by The Study. This book was released on 1996 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes and presents simulation results using a revised model simulating the fate of contaminants in the Athabasca River. The revised fate model allows predictive sediment transport simulation within the WASP4 model framework, predicts resuspension from hydraulic information supplied by WASP4 and from user-supplied sediment characteristics, and can be applied to different flow conditions without having to re-describe sediment transport rates. Several simulations were run using input files from the original model calibration. Program listings of subroutines are included.

Book Ecotoxicology of Depositional Sediments Athabasca River May and September 1993
