This book was released on 2010 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This interim rule would reduce the commercial gag quota to 100,000 pounds for the 2011 fishing year, temporarily suspend the use of red grouper multi-use IFQ allocation so it cannot be used to harvest gag, and to temporarily halt the recreational harvest of gag until long-term recreational fishing management measures can be implemented to allow a harvest at appropriate levels. The environmental assessment (EA) provides a review of the NEPA criteria for significant effects (40 CFR Part 1508.27) and NOAA Fisheries Service criteria for significance (NAO 216-6 Section 6.02), and concluded no significant effect on the quality of the human environment is anticipated from this action"--Cover letter.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This Environmental Assessment (EA) tiers off the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) prepared in 2008 by the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council (GMFMC) for Amendment 30b to the Gulf Reef Fish Fishery Management Plan (GMFMC 2008), and the EIS prepared for the 2006 Consolidated HMS Fishery Management Plan (NMFS 2006). The purpose of this action is to implement compatible regulations for HMS fisheries in the Madison-Swanson, Steamboat Lumps, and the Edges 40 Fathom Contour fishery closure areas to protect spawning aggregations of gag grouper and other reef species, protect spawning habitat, and protect a portion of the offshore male population of gag grouper. Incidental ecological benefits could also accrue to other species that occur within the proposed closure areas. It would close a potential loophole whereby HMS fisheries could be prosecuted in these areas if they were only closed to fisheries managed by the GMFMC. NMFS is performing this action at the request of the GMFMC"--Abstract (p. ii).

Book Improving Fish Stock Assessments

Download or read book Improving Fish Stock Assessments written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-02-27 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ocean harvests have plateaued worldwide and many important commercial stocks have been depleted. This has caused great concern among scientists, fishery managers, the fishing community, and the public. This book evaluates the major models used for estimating the size and structure of marine fish populations (stock assessments) and changes in populations over time. It demonstrates how problems that may occur in fisheries dataâ€"for example underreporting or changes in the likelihood that fish can be caught with a given type of gearâ€"can seriously degrade the quality of stock assessments. The volume makes recommendations for means to improve stock assessments and their use in fishery management.

Book Reef Fish Spawning Aggregations Biology Research and Management

Download or read book Reef Fish Spawning Aggregations Biology Research and Management written by Yvonne Sadovy de Mitcheson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-10 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reef fish spawning aggregations, ranging from small groups to many tens of thousands of individuals, are spectacular but poorly known natural phenomena whereby fish assemble at specific times and locations to spawn. For some species these large groups may be the only form of reproduction, the high fish numbers briefly giving a false impression of stability and abundance—an ‘illusion of plenty’. They are often a focus for intensive seasonal fishing because of their predictability and because many important commercial fishes form them. Highly vulnerable to overexploitation, many aggregations and their associated fisheries, have disappeared or are in decline. Few are effectively managed or incorporated into protected areas. Aggregations are not well understood by fishery scientists, managers and conservationists and their significance little appreciated by fishers or the wider public. To ensure their persistence to replenish important fisheries in coral ecosystems, maintain their ecosystem function and continue to delight divers, a significant change in perspective is needed to foster protection and management. This book provides comprehensive and practical coverage of the biology, study and management of reef fish aggregations, exploring their how, when, where, and why. It explores ways to better protect, study, manage and conserve them, while identifying key data gaps and questions. The text is extensively illustrated with many unique, never before published, photographs and graphics. Case studies on over 20 interesting and important fishes are included, outlining their biology and fisheries and highlighting major concerns and challenges.

As a resort chain swoops in to exploit the shy creatures, the newlyweds unite with other adventurous vacationers to stop the company from turning the reef into a theme park.
