Book excerpt: The European Commission's Strategy on the Prevention and Recycling of Waste outlines why life cycle thinking is essential in the move towards more sustainable consumption and production. The importance of life cycle thinking is further highlighted in the Commission's complimentary Strategy on the Sustainable Use of Natural Resources, in its Integrated Product Policy, as well as in the proposed revisions to the European Waste Framework Directive and the up-coming Sustainable Consumption and Production Action Plan. In 2004, following its international workshop and conference on life cycle assessment and waste management, the Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES) of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) launched a series of regional pilot case studies in collaboration with representatives of the European Union's new member states, acceding countries, and associated countries. The representatives selected, and provided, statistical data for nine waste management regions. The life cycle assessments took into account the situation around 2003 in each region and example management scenarios that achieve Directive compliance and beyond (ref. Koneczny K., Dragusanu V., Bersani R., Pennington D.W. Environmental Assessment of Municipal Waste Management Scenarios: Part I - Data collection and preliminary environmental assessments for life cycle thinking pilot studies, European Commission, JRC-IES, 2007). This report, based on a study carried out on behalf of the JRC by 2.-0 LCA Consultants, considers in further detail the waste management options for the island nation of Malta and the central European city of Krakow, Poland. The life cycle assessments use more robust data, apply cutting edge methodologies, and take into account the waste management costs. The resultant life cycle impact indicators provide a basis to compare the emissions and resources consumed attributable to each waste management option in terms of their contributions to e.g. different environment and human health burdens. One of the methods furthermore highlights how some of the trade-offs between environment, health, and the waste management costs might be partially considered in a single life cycle based cost-benefit framework, as a support to other decision-making information.

Disparities between the rich and poor continues to increase in many of these regions where growing urban areas often witness the worst signs of maltreatment of human labour and misallocation of waste as a resource. This thesis is a case study of the Municipality of Cali in Colombia, where city managers and the stakeholders involved are wrestling with the challenges referred to. Unsustainable patterns of waste production, inefficient collection methods, unorganized human labour, insufficient coverage of the collection system, lack of awareness and absence of a civic culture on waste handling in concert with improper disposal of municipal solid waste, lack of knowledge and laxity in compliance to policies, are the foremost threats to human health and environmental quality in Cali. The paper focuses on the assessment of environmental and social impacts of the municipal solid waste management in this city, , based on the comparison of four scenarios: landfill with no further treatment, landfill with a social-inclusive recycling system for inorganic materials, sorting plant with compost production and sorting plant with biogas combustion to generate electricity. Key social aspects for evaluating improvements in the system are job creation, freedom of association, human health and equity. Global warming, ecotoxicity, avoidance of abiotic depletion, saved fuel consumption and waste recycling are the main indicators for the environmental assessment. Book excerpt: This research analyzed environmental and economic factors associated with municipal solid waste (MSW) management of select high growth Planning District Commissions (PDCs) of Virginia. Current MSW management scenarios were compared to future hypothetical scenarios utilizing a regional landfill or waste-to-energy (WTE) combustion facility. Life-cycle inventory and full cost accounting methods of the Municipal Solid Waste Decision Support Tool, developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), were utilized to estimate annualized environmental emissions and economic costs. Model results and analysis indicate that a regional landfill would be the least cost intensive MSW management strategy in comparison to current management methods; however present the greatest environmental burden with respect to methane emissions. It was also inferred that a WTE facility would represent the least environmental burden with respect to energy offsets via MSW combustion while being the most cost intensive option. The study supports the anecdotal view that a regional-based approach to MSW management of high-growth PDCs would help reduce costs and potential environmental impacts.

I thought to myself, "What a behavior?!". The nearest trashcan was just five meters away. So I bent down, took the crushed pack and gave it back to her, saying that she had lost it. She looked at me in a rather deranged way, but she said nothing and of waste to the trashcan. brought the piece Often people are not aware of the waste they produce. They get rid of it and that's it. As soon as the charming lady dropped the cigarette pack, the problem was solved for her. The pack was on the ground and it suddenly no longer belonged to her. It is taken for granted that somebody else will do the cleaning up. There is a saying that nature does not produce waste. For long as humans obtained the goods they needed from the ground where they lived, the waste that was produced could be handled by nature. This has drastically changed due to urbanization and waste produced by human activities has become a severe burden.
