Book Developing the Occupied Territories Agriculture

Download or read book Developing the Occupied Territories Agriculture written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economy of the Occupied Territories (OT) is currently in turmoil. Income levels have stagnated over the past decade; unemployment and underemployment are rising rapidly; public infrastructure and social services are grossly overstretched; and the fragile natural resource base is threatened with irreversible damage. This study aims to assess prospects for sustainable development in the OT, as well as outline a priority agenda of policy reforms, institutional development and investments needed to promote such growth. The report is in six volumes. Volume I provides a summary overview of the key findings and recommendations of the study. After commenting selectively on the current socioeconomic situation in the OT and its evolution over time, it discusses prospects for sustainable development in the future and outlines the priority agenda of policies and programs needed to promote such development. Volume II explores the strategic choices at the macro level that will be faced by the OT in the future and the implications for economic relations between the OT and the rest of the region. The study looks at the current situation and its evolution over the past 25 years. The study then examines several policy choices for the future affecting the structure of development in the OT. Finally, it outlines some illustrative scenarios for the future, focussing on the consequences of current developments in the region. Volume III reviews the performance of the private sector (including, in particular, the industry and tourism sectors) in the OT. The study assesses the environment in which the private sector operates and its future prospects and makes recommendations for accelerating private sector development in the future. Volume IV reviews the evolution and structure of the agricultural sector in the OT; analyzes its current characteristics; assesses OT competitiveness in the immediate and longer term; outlines the main policy options and their implications; and provides a preliminary assessment of sectoral financial and technical assistance (TA) needs. Volume V assesses the current situation in the infrastructure sectors (electricity, water supply and sanitation, transport, housing and solid waste services) in the OT; identifies the major issues confronting these sectors; and outlines priorities for TA and investment needs. As local authorities are major institutions in the delivery of public services in these sectors, the study also includes a review of their current situation and makes recommendations for improving the functioning of municipalities. Volume VI reviews the current status as regards human resource development; analyzes options for enhancing individual welfare and labor productivity in the OT; and outlines investment and TA priorities for strengthening existing programs and for laying the foundation for later reforms.

Book Area C and the Future of the Palestinian Economy

Download or read book Area C and the Future of the Palestinian Economy written by Orhan Niksic and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first report to systematically evaluate and quantify the economic potential of Area C, which constitutes approximately 61 percent of the West Bank. The report reveals that lifting the restrictions on economic activity in Area C could have a large positive impact on Palestinian GDP, public finances, and employment prospects. Among other things, access to economic activity in Area C is expected to be a key prerequisite for building a sustainable Palestinian economy. However, full potential of the Area C could be materialized only if other restrictions on free movement of goods, labor and capital are removed and the overall business environment in Palestinian territories has become more attractive. The economic significance of Area C lies in that it is the only contiguous territory in the West Bank, which renders it indispensable to connective infrastructure development across the West Bank, and a relative abundance of natural resources situated therein. Area C offers large potential for the development of several sectors of the Palestinian economy: agriculture, stone and mineral processing, cosmetics, construction, tourism, and telecommunications. The report shows that access to economic activity in Area C could increase the Palestinian GDP by as much as 35 percent, the majority of this impact would stem from agriculture and Dead Sea minerals processing industries, as well as the multiplier effect, which has been estimated at 1.5. Although the importance of building connective infrastructure through Area C is discussed in the report, the quantification of this impact is beyond the scope of this report. An increase in GDP of 35 percent, although thought to be a conservative estimate, would be expected to result in at least $800 million increase in tax revenues for the Palestinian authority, which would drastically reduce its dependence on donor aid for financing chronic budget deficits.

Book West Bank and Gaza Environment Priorities Note

Download or read book West Bank and Gaza Environment Priorities Note written by Weltbank and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: West Bank and Gaza is faced with natural resources scarcity, which constrains livelihoods and development to varying degrees. The inherent scarcity of natural resources is further compounded by increasing degradation of environment and natural resources. Multiple factors contribute to deteriorating conditions of the environment and natural resources. The politically fragile situation continues with impacts of restricted movement on people and goods affecting the environment negatively since there are limited options for expansion of built-up areas and other livelihood opportunities. This has led to unsustainable practices with diminishing quality of the environment and natural resource-based livelihood opportunities for communities. It is therefore vital that the environment and natural resources scarcity be actively managed in a manner that enhances community livelihoods and resilience in order to contribute to sustainable development. The Palestinian authority recognizes the challenges that West Bank and Gaza faces in terms of environment and natural resources and has put in places various strategies and programs to address them. While these sectoral and national strategies and plans are important, they require full implementation and follow-up to ensure better environmental outcomes. This report discusses the key environmental issues faced by West Bank and Gaza, and the way forward to combat the same.

Book The Palestinian Economy and the Oslo Process

Download or read book The Palestinian Economy and the Oslo Process written by Sara Roy and published by Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research. This book was released on 1998-09-29 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The foundations for a viable, self-sustaining Palestinian economy have not emerged since the start of the Oslo peace process. Economic conditions in the Gaza Strip and West Bank have deteriorated markedly, leaving the Palestinian economy weaker now than it was in 1967 when measured against the advances made by other states in the region. The reasons for Palestinian economic decline are many but turn on one key issue: Israeli closure policy. Closure restricts the movement of labor and goods and distorts rational economic activity. Now a permanent feature of the local economy, closure has resulted in the physical and economic separation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip and their separation from Israel, high unemployment, permanent unemployment for a growing segment of the labor force, a doubling of poverty levels, increasing child labor, constrained trade relations, and a growing need for relief and social assistance among Palestinians. Closure has devastated Palestinian economic growth and reform and has made it increasingly difficult for people to meet their basic needs. If closure continues to be enforced, the economic and political changes promised by the Oslo agreements and now so desperately needed in the West Bank and Gaza will not be possible

Book Environmental Assessment of the Areas Disengaged by Israel in the Gaza Strip

Download or read book Environmental Assessment of the Areas Disengaged by Israel in the Gaza Strip written by United Nations Environment Programme and published by UNEP/Earthprint. This book was released on 2006 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication presents the findings of a survey, carried out in 2005 by a UNEP team of eight experts, to investigate and assess environmental risks or pollution in the Gaza Strip, focusing on the 21 disengaged Israeli settlements and the Erez industrial site. Using satellite imagery and reports, about 100 areas of interest were identified including, industrial buildings, waste disposal sites, agricultural plants and storage tanks. Overall, the report found that the environmental impact of the former Israeli settlements in the Gaza Strip was limited, with the main concern being the amount of remaining asbestos in the rubble of demolished houses. Once the rubble is removed, asbestos disposed of in a safe manner and the identified areas of contamination are cleaned up, there will be no environmental constraints to human settlement in these areas.
