Book Phytodiversity and Soil Study of Siwalik Hills of Ilam Nepal

Download or read book Phytodiversity and Soil Study of Siwalik Hills of Ilam Nepal written by Ramkrishna Nirola and published by Tribhuban University. This book was released on 2004-07-19 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Study of different kinds of plants, soil and climate and the quantitative analysis of vegetation structure and composition at the three VDCs of Siwalik hills of Ilam was undertaken. A total of 137 flowering plants and 9 pteridophytes belonging to 27 families of trees, 31 families of shrubs, 27 families of herbs and 7 families of ferns are reported. The tree diversity value was highest (2.235) from matured forests of Danabari (Sector II) and the least (2.021) from the regenerating forest of Chulachuli (Sector II). However, the species evenness was highest in sector III for shrub (0.183) and herb (0.128). The tree trunk volume was maximum (413623.13 m2ha-1) in case of matured forest at Danabari (Sector II). Shorea robusta, Terminalia alata and Semecarpus anacardium were the most dominant species in the entire study area. Sector I had the highest shrub and herb density of 1600 pl. ha-1 for Desmodium confertum and 4285.7 pl. ha-1 for Ageratum hustonianum respectively. Sector II has northern aspect and due to more precipitation record has rendered the land remain wet. The tree species of Semecarpus anacardium, Schima wallichi, some species of orchids along with various leguminous plants were recorded. The south facing sectors I and II were drier with more records of degraded land. The similarity index of tree species found in sectors I and II was recorded high (36.36). Soil present in sector III was found to be more acidic (pH 5.6). Organic matter and nitrogen content was higher in sectors II than that of sector I and III. Highest percolation capacity was found in the soil of sector I. Organic matter was positively correlated with nitrogen at the 0.05 level. As a whole, the vegetation was much more encouraging ecologically than expected from a distant observation.

Book Tibetan Medicinal Plants

Download or read book Tibetan Medicinal Plants written by Christa Kletter and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 1402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly, modern medicine relies on so called traditional or ancient medical knowledge. Holistic practices such as adhering to proper diet, observing rules for appropriate behavior, and administering medical preparations are coupled with the latest technology and methods to treat the whole patient. In light of this trend, there is much to be gained from understanding of one of the oldest medical systems still in existence. Tibetan Medicinal Plants provides you a detailed analysis of how Tibetan plants are used in this centuries old system. The book opens with a summary of Tibetan medicine and covers the various habitats in which the plants are found. The main part of this volume encompasses 60 monographs listed by the Tibetan plant name. Each monograph consists of several chapters addressing different topics related either to the Tibetan or the Western approach. Most of the monographs contain a description of the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the used plant parts, and anatomical features of 76 plants are provided. Each monograph presents an overview of the known chemical constituents and pharmacological properties of each plant and describes their use in Tibetan medicine. In contrast to other publications on Tibetan medicine, where translations of the Tibetan terms are given in other languages, this book treats the Tibetan word as a technical term, keeps the Tibetan term and explains its meaning, lessening confusion by reducing the number of translations. Traditional Tibetan medicine has been in existence for centuries. Curative practices existed in the prebuddistic era, and the art of healing developed more than 2500 years ago. Tibetan Medicinal Plants provides a comprehensive overview of all plant types, thus making it easier to grasp the Tibetan concept. It gives you a comprehensive look at this centuries old science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a decade has passed since Professor Gisela Jahn completed Volume 12 of the Handbook of Vegetation Science, dealing with the application of vegetation science in forestry, mostly European forestry. The volume was well received by the critics with the exception that they wanted a more diversified demonstration of forestry-related vegetation science work and a wider representation of forest types from different continents. The topics covered in this volume, 12/1, widen the scope of vegetation science work in forestry over the phytosociological work which was the main focus in the Handbook as perceived by Dr Tüxen. Section 1. Overview T. Kira: Forest Ecosystems of East and Southeast Asia in a Global Perspective; E.O. Box: Climatic Relations of the Forests of East and Southeast Asia; K. Iwatsuki: Species Diversity in East Asia in Global Perspective. The remaining contributions are divided into the following sections: Evergreen Forest Region; Summergreen Forest Region; Montane/Boreal Region; Tropical Forest Region.
