  • Author : Mark Naftel
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2001-01-15
  • ISBN : 1847312268

Download or read book The Telecoms Trade War written by Mark Naftel and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2001-01-15 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If one were to believe the politicians and pundits in the trade press, the world is in midst of a “telecoms revolution,” resulting from (the) deregulation and new competitive opportunities represented by the 1997 World Trade Organisation Agreement on Basic Telecommunications Services. This may be true. Unfortunately, however, the actions of many regulators and industry participants more accurately reveal not a telecoms “revolution” but instead a growing telecoms trade war that is dangerously close to spiralling out of hand. In this book, Naftel and Spiwak review U.S. and European competition and regulatory initiatives post-WTO and provide both a useful roadmap to today's U.S., EU and WTO telecoms regulation and an examination of various case studies to illustrate their points. In so doing, the authors discover unfortunately the sad reality that, despite the political rhetoric, regulators on both sides of the Atlantic have eschewed innovative and indeed productive solutions to create a market structure conducive to long-term competitive rivalry. Instead, the authors demonstrate that current policies reveal a growing cynicism towards the maximisation of consumer welfare that will be difficult - if not outright impossible- to remove.

Book Critical Infrastructure

Download or read book Critical Infrastructure written by Robert S. Radvanovsky and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-04-25 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the initial inception of this book, there have been significant strides to safeguard the operations of our world’s infrastructures. In recent years, there has also been a shift to more fluid postures associated with resilience and the establishment of redundant infrastructure. In keeping with the fast-changing nature of this field, Critical Infrastructure: Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, Third Edition has been revised and updated to reflect this shift in focus and to incorporate the latest developments. The book begins with the historical background of critical infrastructure and why it is important to society. It then explores the current trend in understanding the infrastructure’s sensitivity to impacts that flow through its networked environment. Embracing an "all-hazards approach" to homeland security, critical infrastructure protection and assurance, and emergency management, the authors examine: The National Response Framework (NRF) and how it can be applied globally The relationships between the public and private sectors, and the growing concept of public-private partnerships The shift from the need-to-know paradigm to one based on information sharing, and the nature of necessary controls as this shift continues The need for organizations to adopt resilient planning, implementation, and decision-making processes in order to respond to changes within the threat environment What, where, why, and how risk assessments are to be performed, and why they are needed The impact of new regulation, individually applied self-regulation, industry and government regulation, and law enforcement In the final chapters, the book discusses current information sharing and analysis centers (ISACs), distributed control systems, and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems and their challenges. It concludes by exploring current challenges associated with establishing a trusted network across various sectors—demonstrating how models of information can be categorized and communicated within trusted communities to better assure the public-private relationship. ? ?

Book Industry Structure and Pricing

Download or read book Industry Structure and Pricing written by Mark A. Jamison and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industry Structure and Pricing: The New Rivalry in Infrastructure extends current economic models by incorporating effects of actual and potential rivalry in markets outside the markets of immediate interest. Focusing on the contestable model, the author shows how diverse patterns of actual and potential rivalry, called multilateral rivalry or MLR, affect the appropriateness of many regulatory policies. It is specifically shown that many conclusions of the contestability literature are overly generous to firms that might want to protect or extend their monopoly positions. While this book's refinement to existing economic theory gives strong results, it is still based on static production functions and demands - integrated to provide a dynamic view of multilateral rivalry.
