Book excerpt: Stenciled on many of the deactivated facilities at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, the evocative phrase “abandoned in place” indicates the structures that have been deserted. Some structures, too solid for any known method of demolition, stand empty and unused in the wake of the early period of US space exploration. Now Roland Miller’s color photographs document the NASA, Air Force, and Army facilities across the nation that once played a crucial role in the space race. Rapidly succumbing to the elements and demolition, most of the blockhouses, launch towers, tunnels, test stands, and control rooms featured in Abandoned in Place are located at secure military or NASA facilities with little or no public access. Some have been repurposed, but over half of the facilities photographed no longer exist. The haunting images collected here impart artistic insight while preserving an important period in history.

Although he worked on this project in the late 1940s, Sartre never completed it to his satisfaction, and it remained unpublished until after his death in 1980. Presented here for the first time in English, Notebooks for an Ethics is Sartre's attempt to articulate a moral philosophy. In the Notebooks he addresses any number of themes and topics relevant to an effort to formulate a concrete and revolutionary socialist ethics, among them the differences between force and violence, the relationship of means and ends, and the relationship of oppression and alienation. Most important, he tries to show that there can be an authentic mutual recognition among free individuals where no one steals another's freedom. Book excerpt: The UK Land-Ocean Interaction Study (LOIS) provided a major opportunity to measure and model the processes controlling the fluxes of materials between river basins and coastal seas. The main programme of research took place between 1992 and 1998, funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council, and involved approximately 360 coastal researchers contributing to more than 70 collaborative projects. This book presents accessible summaries of key results of this research. The ten chapters of the book are written by leading contributors to the programme, and cover aspects of the physical, sedimentological, chemical and biological processes controlling fluxes between river catchments and coastal seas in temporate environments. Major overarching themes for all of the chapters include the persistence, storage, degradation and transport of pollutants from catchment to coastal sea, and an emphasis on the relevance of research for river and coastal water quality management. The chapters also describe a number of important technological advances in the measurement of processes and longer term monitoring of the fluvial, estuarine and coastal environments. Approaches to monitoring were also transferred between disciplines, in many cases for the first time. But after penning some notes on Habakkuk, Jonah, and Obadiah, I found my own soul helped, and an interest developed in the further study of these much-neglected portions of Scriptures, and so took up Hosea and the books following. I have sought to press their practical application as giving important teaching for a remnant people in a day of decline, while not neglecting their dispensational bearing. This, I am persuaded, is what is greatly needed at the present moment. If God be pleased to use the Notes for the stirring of His people's consciences and the comfort of their hearts, the desired end will be realized. H. A. IRONSIDE.
