Book Between Ballots and Bullets

Download or read book Between Ballots and Bullets written by William B. Quandt and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2001-09-19 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Arab world as elsewhere, authoritarian regimes have come under pressure for change. As yet, however, democracy has not taken root as an alternative form of governance. This book on Algeria looks at both the erosion of the authoritarian model and the difficulties of making a transition to democracy. Within the past decade, Algeria experienced one of the most promising experiments of opening up the political system and allowing a remarkable degree of freedom. That initial effort failed, however, when elections were won by an Islamist party that was unacceptable to the military, and it was followed by an explosion of political violence that in recent years has cost at least 75,000 lives. Despite this deep crisis there are reasons to believe that Algeria may emerge from its turmoil with a consensus on the need to respect pluralism and to accept the basic rules of democratic politics. Blending theoretical insights with an analysis of the Algerian case, this book demonstrates that democratization is likely to be a difficult process in the Middle East, but that the prospects for eventual success are not as gloomy as often asserted by those who see an incompatibility between democracy and Islam.

  • Pages : 176 pages

Book excerpt: Since opening to the outside world and embarking on an economic reform programme in 1978, China has had one of the highest rates of sustained economic growth and poverty reduction in the world. However, during the 1990s several challenges emerged in relation to levels of inequality and environmental degradation. This evaluative report on the relative effectiveness of World Bank assistance to China focuses on the period 1993-2002, although it includes some references to developments in earlier and more recent years also. Findings include that the World Bank has made important contributions to economic reform, poverty reduction, infrastructure development, and environmental protection, but has fallen short of its objectives in promoting fiscal and financial reforms to reduce inequality and risk.

Book excerpt: In the early 18th century, Edinburgh was a filthy backwater town synonymous with poverty and disease. Yet by century's end, it had become the marvel of modern Europe, home to the finest minds of the day and their breathtaking innovations in architecture, politics, science, the arts, and economies - all of which continues to echo loudly today. Adam Smith penned "The Wealth of Nations". James Boswell produced "The Life of Samuel Johnson". Alongside them, pioneers such as David Hume, Robert Burns, James Hutton, and Sir Walter Scott transformed the way we understand our perceptions and feelings, sickness and health, relations between the sexes, the natural world, and the purpose of existence. James Buchan beautifully reconstructs the intimate geographic scale and boundless intellectual milieu of Enlightenment Edinburgh. With the scholarship of an historian and the elegance of a novelist, he tells the story of the triumph of this unlikely town and the men whose vision brought it into being.

Book Special Trust and Confidence

Download or read book Special Trust and Confidence written by David Reece and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1996 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These eclectic memoirs by seventeen former Canadian ambassadors explore the challenges, both novel and routine, confronting diplomats abroad. They eschew the "great moments" in history in favour of real-life problems: designing a new embassy building, furthering aid, trade and immigration, the closing of missions, coping with war in the host country, or dealing alternately with headquarters in Ottawa and mercurial heads of government. Postings range from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Indochina, the UN and NATO, the Middle East and Iraq, China and Japan, Africa and the Caribbean, to Western Europe, Hungary and the former USSR. These essays lend credence and force to the view that embassies often need, or choose, to take important initiatives and that instructions from Ottawa are often adapted or reinterpreted to deal with rapidly evolving local situations. "Special Trust and Confidence" will appeal to government officials of every stripe, to students and teachers of international relations, indeed, to any reader of "worldly" bent.
