The basic problems investigated in this book arose from the author's speculation that many individuals who have what it takes to be an entrepreneur may simply not have what it takes to be an effective manager. In fact, some of the characteristics that are essential to the entrepreneurial drive may be detrimental to the development of solid management skills. This may be one reason that so many entrepreneurs fail in business-- Certain elements in their personality make-up may actually prevent them from being, or even becoming, good managers. The overall objective of the study was to learn if there is a significant relationship between entrepreneurs and professional managers in terms of their basic aptitudes toward managing. The research was carried out by examining a number of the most important underpinning psychosocial aspects that have been demonstrated as valid predictors of management performance.

Ivan Pongracic, Jr. examines these themes through the lenses of the economic theory of the firm. Balancing the tendency for management literature to overlook basic costs and trade-offs of decentralization, and the rigidity of economics that hinders an appreciation for the real world phenomenon of decentralization, this book arrives at a realistic middle ground between the two extremes. The dance between hierarchy and employee empowerment exists in even the most hierarchical firms, and this book explores this often overlooked dynamic. The decentralization of decision-making and flattening of managerial hierarchies within business firms can best be understood as a response to situations where employees hold knowledge that is superior to that held by firms owners and managers. Decentralizing decision-making in those circumstances allows firms to utilize their employees' superior personal knowledge, often by encouraging them to act in creative, entrepreneurial ways, while requiring some reliance on intra-firm spontaneous order processes to co-ordinate the activities of the employees. This book adds an important component to the standard economic theory of the firm by exploring the implications of intra-firm knowledge dispersion. It also explains how firms engage in a process of continuing experimentation to create an organizational structure that fosters employee creativity and entrepreneurship. Scholars in economics, entrepreneurship, organizational studies and management will find this book a fascinating exploration of firm behavior.

Book excerpt: A decade in preparation, Immigrant Entrepreneurs offers the most comprehensive case study ever completed of the causes and consequences of immigrant business ownership. Koreans are the most entrepreneurial of America's new immigrants. By the mid-1970s Americans had already become aware that Korean immigrants were opening, buying, and operating numerous business enterprises in major cities. When Koreans flourished in small business, Americans wanted to know how immigrants could find lucrative business opportunities where native-born Americans could not. Somewhat later, when Korean-black conflicts surfaced in a number of cities, Americans also began to fear the implications for intergroup relations of immigrant entrepreneurs who start in the middle rather than at the bottom of the social and economic hierarchy. Nowhere was immigrant enterprise more obvious or impressive than in Los Angeles, the world's largest Korean settlement outside of Korea and America's premier city of small business. Analyzing both the short-run and the long-run causes of Korean entrepreneurship, the authors explain why the Koreans could find, acquire, and operate small business firms more easily than could native-born residents. They also provide a context for distinguishing clashes of culture and clashes of interest which cause black-Korean tensions in cities, and for framing effective policies to minimize the tensions.
