Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to an Insect Fauna of the Amazon Valley: Coleoptera-Staphylinidae The permanent preservation Of valuable and fragile specimens and the associating Of them in an inalienable manner with the name given to them, is, however, no easy task. But, in order to accomplish it in the case of the fragile insects here described, I have devised a method Of covering and hermetically sealing the type Specimens, which will, I believe, accomplish their complete protection from all destroying agencies except fire and rude physical catastrophes. Nearly all the smaller species here de scribed, as well as a considerable preportion of the larger species, I have preserved by this method; and, rendered bold by the valuable results it promises, I have ventured to describe even minute species where I had but a single example Of it from which to draw up my description. I have taken some steps to test the efficacy Of this mode of preservation, and hope soon to be able to publish a description Of the method. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of the Entomological Society of America, Vol. 9 On no other continent in the world has the struggle between insect and man been so acute as on this immense area containing tropical and sub-tropical conditions, and nowhere has the insect been so victorious or so securely entrenched in regions Offering every advantage to it and every obstacle to man. The mosquito has held the key to some of the richest regions Of the earth's surface, the T setse fly has rendered extensive transportation impossible, and the tick, if one may be permitted to use entomology in its broad sense and include ticks, has kept the White man at bay and devastated his herds. But by slow degrees the power is passing from insect to man and nowhere is the conquest of such an adverse and powerful force of nature by patient effort illustrated more strikingly than in the gradual conquest in the real sense, of Africa. The West Coast is no longer a White man's grave, as it was formerly Called, nagana and tick fevers are losing their original terrors and we should be unworthy of our traditions did we believe that sleeping sickness Would always remain the scourge that experience has demonstrated it to be within recent years. The British territories in Africa are so situated that it has fallen to the lot of our investigators to contribute largely to this notable conquest, the history of which would constitute one of the finest examples. Of entomological achievement that we have. But to attempt to outline such a history would exceed the limits which must necessarily be set to this account of the manner in which the work is being carried on at the present time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Collect and Preserve Insects The making of such a collection may have educational and recrea tional as well as scientific values. Developing this hobby is one of the finest ways for students, especially those in agricultural districts, to become acquainted with the large number of injurious and beneficial insects that they encounter about the home and in the fields. High school classes in biology find excellent laboratory material in the many insects available for rearing and study. Both old and young collectors find a great deal of pleasure in working with the showy and beautiful insects, such as beetles, moths, and butterflies; the satisfaction derived comes both from having relaxation from the day's work and from making real contributions to scientific knowledge. Many entomological museums welcome the opportunity to examine carefully prepared and labeled collections. These collections supply distribution records for insect species, in addition to other information of value to tech nical entomologists. Also, the amateur collector profits from his contact with specialists who can help him identify his specimens and advise him at any stage of his work. It is hoped that this circular will Show how easy it is to make a start in insect collecting and will give the student helpful ideas on how and where to begin.
