Book The Invisible Hand in Popular Culture

Download or read book The Invisible Hand in Popular Culture written by Paul A. Cantor and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2012-11-30 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Analyzes how ideas about economics and political philosophy find their way into everything from Star Trek to Malcolm in the Middle.” —Wall Street Journal Popular culture often champions freedom as the fundamentally American way of life and celebrates the virtues of independence and self-reliance. But film and television have also explored the tension between freedom and other core values, such as order and political stability. What may look like healthy, productive, and creative freedom from one point of view may look like chaos, anarchy, and a source of destructive conflict from another. Film and television continually pose the question: Can Americans deal with their problems on their own, or must they rely on political elites to manage their lives? In this groundbreaking work, Paul A. Cantor—whose previous book, Gilligan Unbound, was named one of the best nonfiction books of the year by the Los Angeles Times—explores the ways in which television shows such as Star Trek, The X-Files, South Park, and Deadwood and films such as The Aviator and Mars Attacks! have portrayed both top-down and bottom-up models of order. Drawing on the works of John Locke, Adam Smith, Alexis de Tocqueville, and other proponents of freedom, Cantor contrasts the classical liberal vision of America?particularly its emphasis on the virtues of spontaneous order?with the Marxist understanding of the “culture industry” and the Hobbesian model of absolute state control. The Invisible Hand in Popular Culture concludes with a discussion of the impact of 9/11 on film and television, and the new anxieties emerging in contemporary alien-invasion narratives: the fear of a global technocracy that seeks to destroy the nuclear family, religious faith, local government, and other traditional bulwarks against the absolute state.

Book T Bone Burnett

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lloyd Sachs
  • Publisher : University of Texas Press
  • Release : 2016-10-04
  • ISBN : 1477303774
  • Pages : 279 pages

Download or read book T Bone Burnett written by Lloyd Sachs and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: T Bone Burnett is a unique, astonishingly prolific music producer, singer-songwriter, guitarist, and soundtrack visionary. Renowned as a studio maven with a Midas touch, Burnett is known for lifting artists to their greatest heights, as he did with Raising Sand, the multiple Grammy Award–winning album by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, as well as acclaimed albums by Los Lobos, the Wallflowers, B. B. King, and Elvis Costello. Burnett virtually invented “Americana” with his hugely successful roots-based soundtrack for the Coen Brothers film, O Brother, Where Art Thou? Outspoken in his contempt for the entertainment industry, Burnett has nevertheless received many of its highest honors, including Grammy Awards and an Academy Award. T Bone Burnett offers the first critical appreciation of Burnett’s wide-ranging contributions to American music, his passionate advocacy for analog sound, and the striking contradictions that define his maverick artistry. Lloyd Sachs highlights all the important aspects of Burnett’s musical pursuits, from his early days as a member of Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue and his collaboration with the playwright Sam Shepard to the music he recently composed for the TV shows Nashville and True Detective and his production of the all-star album Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes. Sachs also underscores Burnett’s brilliance as a singer-songwriter in his own right. Going well beyond the labels “legendary” or “visionary” that usually accompany his name, T Bone Burnett reveals how this consummate music maker has exerted a powerful influence on American music and culture across four decades.

Book Joss Whedon

    Book Details:
  • Author : Amy Pascale
  • Publisher : Chicago Review Press
  • Release : 2014-08-01
  • ISBN : 1613741049
  • Pages : 460 pages

Download or read book Joss Whedon written by Amy Pascale and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 4 million US viewers who watched Buffy, the Vampire Slayer to a worldwide box office of $1.5 billion for The Avengers is quite a leap. Yet the creator of them both, Josh Whedon, told as personal a tale with six superheroes and over-the-top explosions as he did with a girl trying to make her way through high school. Whedon has always been determined to follow his own path. This definitive biography shows how his years at an elite English public school led to his early successes, which often turned into frustration in both television (Roseanne) and film (Buffy the Vampire Slayer; Alien: Resurrection). But when Whedon resurrected his girl hero on a young network, the results enabled him to produce three more television series, several movies, and Marvel comic books, culminating in the blockbuster The Avengers. Then Much Ado About Nothing, a personal project shot in his home and cast with friends, allowed him to step out of Marvel's shadow. Amy Pascale has based this revealing biography on extensive original interviews with Whedon's family, friends, collaborators, and stars—as well as with the man himself. They've shared candid, behind-the-scenes accounts of his work with Pixar, his filmmaking adventures, and the making of his groundbreaking series Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Amy Pascale is a director at MTV. She co-founded and edits the offbeat Web magazine PopGurls.com. She lives in New York. Nathan Fillion starred in the Josh Whedon vehicles Firefly, Serenity, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, and Much Ado About Nothing. He plays Richard Castle on the ABC series Castle.

Book Reading Harry Potter Again

Download or read book Reading Harry Potter Again written by Giselle Liza Anatol and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-05-19 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Harry Potter Again: New Critical Essays extends the discussion of the Harry Potter books by covering the entire series in one new and comprehensive volume. As was argued in Reading Harry Potter: Critical Essays (Praeger, 2003), interpreting the underlying messages and themes of the Harry Potter series is vital for understanding the ways in which we perceive and interact with each other in contemporary society. The novels and corresponding film adaptations have broken records with their astonishing sales and widespread acclaim. They have also generated a plethora of writing—by critics, academics, and fans. J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books could easily be called this generation's most formative narratives, and thus certainly warrant critical attention. This new volume of essays covers the entire seven-book sequence. Contributors consider myriad themes from a variety of perspectives. Areas addressed include religion, morality, race, magic, and other themes popular in discussing the books. With this book in hand, fans of the series—indeed anyone interested in the Harry Potter phenomenon—will better appreciate and understand Rowling's work and the impact of her stories on our culture and on our times.
