Book Enterprise Risk Management in Finance

Download or read book Enterprise Risk Management in Finance written by David L. Olson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-26 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enterprise Risk Management in Finance is a guide to measuring and managing Enterprise-wide risks in financial institutions. Financial institutions operate in a unique manner when compared to other businesses. They are, by the nature of their business, highly exposed to risk at every level, and indeed employ their own risk management functions to manage many of these risks. However, financial firms are also highly exposed at enterprise level. Traditional approaches and frameworks for ERM are flawed when applied to banks, asset managers or insurance houses, and a different approach is needed. This new book provides a comprehensive, technical guide to ERM for financial institutions. Split into three parts, it first sets the scene, putting ERM in the context of finance houses. It will examine the financial risks already inherent in banking, and then insurance operations, and how these need to be accounted for at a floor and enterprise level. The book then provides the necessary tools to implement ERM in these environments, including performance analysis, credit analysis and forecasting applications. Finally, the book provides real life cases of successful and not so successful ERM in financial institutions. Technical and rigorous, this book will be a welcome addition to the literature in this area, and will appeal to risk managers, actuaries, regulators and senior managers in banks and financial institutions.

Download or read book Market and Credit Risk as Components of Bank Enterprise Risk Management written by Heba Mohamed Abdel Aziz and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Risk is a very important aspect to consider in the banking sector. The risk model used in the developed economies can be very attractive, but very misleading when used in the emerging economies. This paper analyzes the need for enterprise risk management (ERM) in the banking sector in the emerging economies. Further, it tackles the relationship between market and credit risk in emerging economies banking sector. Despite the technical problems, such as, the lack of historical data to work with in the emerging economies and the markets inefficiency that I faced while doing this paper, this study shows, on a relatively small scale, that market and credit risk affects one another, and proves ERM as a very important tool to enhance risk measurement and supervision in the banking sector. This paper show that despite the fact that not a lot of banks out of my sample crystallize the interaction between market and credit risk, still, they point a number of factors contributing to such outcome. The results end to an important implication that ERM has to be implemented in the emerging economies banking sector, while the current regulatory framework should be changed to accommodate the ERM program.

Without risk, there would be no motivation to conduct business. But a key principle is that organizations should accept risks that they are competent enough to deal with, and “outsource” other risks to those who are more competent to deal with them (such as insurance companies). Enterprise Risk Management (2nd Edition) approaches enterprise risk management from the perspectives of accounting, supply chains, and disaster management, in addition to the core perspective of finance. While the first edition included the perspective of information systems, the second edition views this as part of supply chain management or else focused on technological specifics. It discusses analytical tools available to assess risk, such as balanced scorecards, risk matrices, multiple criteria analysis, simulation, data envelopment analysis, and financial risk measures.

Book Enterprise Risk Management in Financial Services Industry

Download or read book Enterprise Risk Management in Financial Services Industry written by A. V. Vedpuriswar and published by SBS Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about how Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is evolving in the financial services industry. Key risk management issues facing financial service firms include: Risk Governance, Regulatory and Economic Capital, Credit Risk Management, Market Risk and Asset/Liability Management, Operational Risk Management, Risk Systems and Technology. ERM is being used by financial institutions seeking better decision-making, greater shareholder value, and stronger internal controls. ERM can simultaneously improve a company's financial performance, manage its risk profile and provide better risk disclosures to boards, shareholders, regulator, and rating agencies. It is not only external pressures (such as Sarbanes Oxley), which are giving an impetus to ERM, but also a growing realisation within companies that it can be used as a tool for creating shareholder value. The growing seriousness of ERM initiatives is also helping to formalise the linkage between a company's business operations and its overall risk management program. This first part of the book covers conceptual issues. The second illustrates these concepts, using case studies on well known financial institutions such as, Lehman Brothers, Royal Bank of Canada, ING Group, Comerzbank, Lloyds TSB, BNP Paribas, ABN AMRO, Credit Suisse, DBS Group, Dresdner Bank, Bank of Scotia, Standard Chartered andAmerican Express. It is hoped that the book will be very useful to students, academics and bankers, wanting to know more about ERM.

Book Board Diversity and Enterprise Risk Management Implementation in Banking Industry

Download or read book Board Diversity and Enterprise Risk Management Implementation in Banking Industry written by Wing Ho Fergus Lam and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enterprise risk management (ERM) refers to a holistic approach of corporate risk management. The global financial crisis restates the importance of ERM to safeguard stakeholders' interests. The board of directors takes the main responsibility of risk management and hence the board composition could be a key determinant for the success of ERM implementation. In this study, I examine the effect of board diversity on ERM implementation in the U.S. banking industry. Based on a multidimensional board diversity index of banks during the sample period from 2004 to 2013, I find strong evidence that banks with diverse boards are more likely to implement ERM. In cross-sectional tests, I examine the moderating effects of bank risk exposures and external scrutiny. I find that the effects of board diversity on banks' ERM implementation are stronger for banks with lower regulatory capital and higher duration ratio, for larger banks that are subject to tighter regulation, and for banks that are audited by Big N auditors. In additional tests, I provide evidence that ERM implementation mitigates future non-performing loans and drives future derivative hedging activities.
