Book The Management Process

Download or read book The Management Process written by William M. Fox and published by IAP. This book was released on 2009-11-01 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Originally Published in 1963 by R.D. Irwin) The Management Process presents new and traditional subject matter in a diff erent context because it is felt that greater emphasis should be given to the interaction of the management functions. All managers plan, organize, and control the work of others, but not in a simple, sequential pattern. Managing is a continuous operation or process involving the interaction of these functions. Managers must plan for organizing activity, organize for it, and control it, and they must perform these same functions for control. It is felt that practicing managers do, in eff ect, think in these terms. Consequently, an analysis of traditional and other materials in this context should not only be more realistic but also more meaningful to the student or practitioner. Reference to the chapter headings in the Table of Contents will illustrate the way in which this interaction approach provides a basic framework for the organization of this book. As a text this book is intended for a fi rst course in management, or a more advanced course, depending upon the characteristics of the curriculum in which it is used. No specifi c course preparation, however, need be regarded as prerequisite to its use.

Book Gainsharing and Power

Download or read book Gainsharing and Power written by Denis Collins and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Denis Collins believes that participatory management systems are inevitable in democratic societies because they are ethically superior to authoritarian management systems. Managers must begin to share decision making and economic outcomes with their employees if they want to obtain long-term efficiency and effectiveness in a competitive business environment. Changes in power relationships are bound to occur in the transitional period, Collins reports, and will challenge the flexibility of management.Scanlon Plans were developed in the 1930s as a way to link improvements in productivity to employee wages. Popular because of the large amount of employee involvement in their design, Scanlon Plans are in place at 260 Fortune 1000 companies, as well as many smaller firms. To understand the considerable variation in the success of gainsharing plans and participatory management more generally, Collins studied six companies that used Scanlon Programs, explaining the nuts and bolts of each plan. He addresses the concerns of workers, managers, and unions when they were present, highlighting political games employees must address to enhance success. Collins then offers a new theory of gainsharing based on conflicts of interest at work.

Download or read book The Grand Experiment written by Christopher Johnson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1991. In this volume, the author states that is not an economic history or 'an economic analysis, although it draws upon both disciplines. However, it is an attempt at political economy. It surveys the economic policies of the Thatcher Conservatives, from their intellectual origins in Opposition to their formulation in government papers and their implementation through three terms of office. It seeks to judge the appropriateness of the policies, the competence of their execution and the degree of their success in achieving the desired effects. Johnson confirms that possible alternative policies are not discussed in detail, and we can now never know how they would have turned out. Appraisal of the Thatcher Government's policies, however, inevitably implies something about what the alternatives might have been, particularly those alternatives that members of the Government themselves seriously contemplated.
