Nowadays a substantial proportion of youth in the Netherlands has a migrant background. This study focuses on how these young adults make the transition to adulthood in the family domain. What preferences and behavior regarding family life transitions are predominant among migrant and Dutch youth? How and to what extent are these preferences and behavior among migrant and Dutch youth influenced by their parents? This study surveys different aspects of family life transitions: adolescents' preferred type of union, their gender roles preferences, the preferred timing of family life transitions, and patterns of co-residence in the parental home. In order to compare distinct mechanisms of intergenerational transmission among different migrant groups, this study includes the four largest migrant groups in the Netherlands: Surinamese, Antilleans, Moroccans, and Turks, as well as native Dutch.

The book examines how the traditional domain markers of adulthood, such as finishing education and caring for children, have changed. The theory of emerging adulthood is further developed by considering how Arnett’s emerging adulthood, Erikson’s early adulthood, and Robinson’s theory of early adult crisis fit together, and data is provided to support the new framework given. The quantitative analyses are further enhanced by anthropologists' examinations of transitions to adulthood by young men and women. These analyses add depth to the survey findings, and are the basis for creating a new understanding of the diversity among these communities in Sweden. This integrated volume represents the work of an interdisciplinary team of demographers, sociologists, and anthropologists whose findings are compared to immigration and family transitions in Sweden, Norway, and other similar communities throughout Europe.
