Book Narration and Spectatorship in Moving Images

Download or read book Narration and Spectatorship in Moving Images written by Barbara Fisher Anderson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophers and students of the arts have wondered since the time of Aristotle about the nature of aesthetic experience, and how this experience can seemingly be evoked by works of art. For more than a century producers and directors of motion pictures have made decisions about how to craft them based upon assumptions about complex stylistic devices and the effects such patterns of organization have on viewers. Over the past few years film scholars have made considerable progress in analyzing the manifold connections that exist between stylistic patterns and aesthetic effects for moving images of all kinds. In doing so, they have increasingly drawn upon insights and methodologies derived from psychology. The international conference from which this volume takes its contributions and its title, was organized to encourage the seeking of descriptive models pertaining to those elements of filmic construction that account for specific aesthetic experience. The focus of the current selection of twenty essays is therefore on the elements of filmic narration and their presumed aesthetic effects. The editors are pleased to strengthen the link between film studies and psychology in the interest of gaining tangible insight into the ancient mystery of the link between art and aesthetic experience.

Book excerpt: Anthony Giddens is arguably the world's leading sociologist. In this controversial contribution to the Giddens debate, Stjepan Mestrovic takes up and criticizes the major themes of his work - particularly the concept of 'high modernity' as opposed to 'postmodernity' and his attempted construction of a 'synthetic' tradition based on human agency and structure. Testing Giddens' theories against what is happening in the real world from genocide in Africa to near secession in Quebec, Mestrovic discerns in the construction of synthetic traditions not the promise of freedom held out by Giddens but rather the ominous potential for new forms of totalitarian control.

Book The Bloomsbury Research Handbook of Emotions in Classical Indian Philosophy

Download or read book The Bloomsbury Research Handbook of Emotions in Classical Indian Philosophy written by Maria Heim and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-08 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a rich variety of premodern Indian texts across multiple traditions, genres, and languages, this collection explores how emotional experience is framed, evoked, and theorized in order to offer compelling insights into human subjectivity. Rather than approaching emotion through the prism of Western theory, a team of leading scholars of Indian traditions showcases the literary texture, philosophical reflections, and theoretical paradigms that classical Indian sources provide in their own right. The focus is on how the texts themselves approach those dimensions of the human condition we may intuitively think of as being about emotion, without pre-judging what that might be. The result is a collection that reveals the range and diversity of phenomena that benefit from being gathered under the formal term “emotion”, but which in fact open up what such theorisation, representation, and expression might contribute to a cross-cultural understanding of this term. In doing so, these chapters contribute to a cosmopolitan, comparative, and pluralistic conception of human experience. Adopting a broad phenomenological methodology, this handbook reframes debates on emotion within classical Indian thought and is an invaluable resource for researchers and students seeking to understand the field beyond the Western tradition.

Book Virtue or Virtuosity

Download or read book Virtue or Virtuosity written by Jane O'Dea and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-09-30 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing upon the past two decades of burgeoning literature in philosophy of music, this study offers a comprehensive, critical analysis of what is entailed in performance interpretation. It argues that integrity and other virtues offset the harm that virtuosity and rigid historical authenticity can impose on the perceptive judgment required of excellent musical interpretation. Proposed are challenging and provocative reassessments of the appropriate roles for virtuosity and historical authenticity in musical performance. Acknowledging the competitive ethos of the contemporary music scene, it details the kind of character a performer needs to develop in order to withstand those pressures and to achieve interpretive excellence. Performers are encouraged to examine and explore the ethical dimension of their art against their responsibilities to the diverse patrons they serve. Professional and student performers and instructors will appreciate this practical discussion of the ethical challenges performers confront when interpreting musical works. The ethical discourse applies to instrumental performance studies, the history and theory of music, general music pedagogy, and philosophy of music courses.

Book Affective Spaces

  • Author : Federico De Matteis
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2020-11-22
  • ISBN : 1000281086
  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book Affective Spaces written by Federico De Matteis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-22 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the notion of affective space in relation to architecture. It helps to clarify the first-person, direct experience of the environment and how it impacts a person’s emotional states, influencing their perception of the world around them. Affective space has become a central notion in several discussions across philosophy, geography, anthropology, architecture and so on. However, only a limited selection of its key features finds resonance in architectural and urban theory, especially the idea of atmospheres, through the work of German phenomenologist Gernot Böhme. This book brings to light a wider range of issues bound to lived corporeal experience. These further issues have only received minor attention in architecture, where the discourse on affective space mostly remains superficial. The theory of atmospheres, in particular, is often criticized as being a surface-level, shallow theory as it is introduced in an unsystematic and fragmented fashion, and is a mere "easy to use" segment of what is a wider and all but impressionistic analytical method. This book provides a broader outlook on the topic and creates an entry point into a hitherto underexplored field. The book’s theoretical foundation rests on a wide range of non-architectural sources, primarily from philosophy, anthropology and the cognitive sciences, and is strengthened through cases drawn from actual architectural and urban space. These cases make the book more comprehensible for readers not versed in contemporary philosophical trends.

Book Emotions in History Lost and Found

Download or read book Emotions in History Lost and Found written by Ute Frevert and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coming to terms with emotions and how they influence human behaviour, seems to be of the utmost importance to societies that are obsessed with everything “neuro.” On the other hand, emotions have become an object of constant individual and social manipulation since “emotional intelligence” emerged as a buzzword of our times. Reflecting on this burgeoning interest in human emotions makes one think of how this interest developed and what fuelled it. From a historian’s point of view, it can be traced back to classical antiquity. But it has undergone shifts and changes which can in turn shed light on social concepts of the self and its relation to other human beings (and nature). The volume focuses on the historicity of emotions and explores the processes that brought them to the fore of public interest and debate.

Book A History of Emotion in Western Music

Download or read book A History of Emotion in Western Music written by Michael Spitzer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-14 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When asked to describe what music means to them, most people talk about its power to express or elicit emotions. As a melody can produce a tear, tingle the spine, or energize athletes, music has a deep impact on how we experience and encounter the world. Because of the elusiveness of these musical emotions, however, little has been written about how music creates emotions and how musical emotion has changed its meaning for listeners across the last millennium. In this sweeping landmark study, author Michael Spitzer provides the first history of musical emotion in the Western world, from Gregorian chant to Beyoncé. Combining intellectual history, music studies, philosophy, and cognitive psychology, A History of Emotion in Western Music introduces current approaches to the study of emotion and formulates an original theory of how musical emotion works. Diverging from psychological approaches that center listeners' self-reports or artificial experiments, Spitzer argues that musical emotions can be uncovered in the techniques and materials of composers and performers. Together with its extensive chronicle of the historical evolution of musical style and emotion, this book offers a rich union of theory and history.

Book Emotional Development Across the Lifespan

Download or read book Emotional Development Across the Lifespan written by Linda A. Camras and published by Guilford Publications. This book was released on 2022-07-12 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unique in its dual focus on emotion and lifespan development, this text weaves together theory, research, and practical clinical implications for fostering children's emotional well-being. The author examines how emotions are experienced, expressed, understood, and regulated from infancy through later adulthood, surveying both typical and atypical development. For each stage, chapters highlight the interrelated influences of temperament, neurobiology, and the social environment, and distinguish universal processes from those that vary across cultures. The book presents current knowledge about specific emotions, probes the causes and consequences of emotional maladjustment, and reviews evidence-based and promising interventions. Innovative methods, examples, and meta-analyses are described; key terms are defined within chapters and in an end-of-book glossary.

Book Emotion in Language

Download or read book Emotion in Language written by Ulrike M. Lüdtke and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-12-16 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The miracle of children's language development and the joy of expressive language on the one hand and the vulnerability of language and the sorrow and grief caused by its distortion or even loss in people with aphasia or dementia on the other hand show us the inseparability of emotion and language in its extremes. Although the ‘emotional turn’ promised a paradigmatic shift from a rationalistic towards an emotion-integrating conceptualization of language, hardly any interdisciplinary research has focused on the interplay between emotion and language. The present book covers the wide range of work on Emotion in Language with contributions from numerous disciplines in the three areas of Theory, Research, and Application. With contributions both from well-known pioneers in the area of this topic as well as from young scientists, the book offers a broad range of perspectives from linguistics and language development to neurology, psychology and developmental neuropsychology and to the fields of philosophy and phenomenology.
